showtime: dan colen @ gagosian

we have to admit, we really love the work of dan colen - so much that we bought the holy shit t-shirt @ skin fruit ;-). too bad we will miss his ny show 'poetry' @ gagosian. but thanks to art observed u can read this great review of it, written by patrick meagher of the silvershed.

showtime: olek @ christopher henry gallery

don't miss "knitting is for pus****", a solo of polish artist olek @ christopher henry gallery, nyc.
during our last visit to ny, we have already admired olek's crocheted bike @ the lower east side, without actually knowing who the author was. but now olek has acquired some well-deserved fame (check out the latest damn mag who features a cool article about her) with her splendid pieces. for the exhibition @ c henry, she trasformed the ground floor of the gallery into a miniature apartment, inside which she crocheted every single element.
(brought to our attention by geoffrey, who himself was briefly transformed to an artwork by olek :-). read all about it on according to g!!)

Artist Residencies: Urgent Deadlines

(ALL) The Millay Colony for the Arts Residencies: The Millay Colony for the Arts offers one-month residencies to six visual artists, writers and composers each month between April and November. Nurturing the work of artists of all ages, from a range of cultures and communities, and in all stages of their artistic career, the Colony offers comfortable private rooms, private studio spaces, and ample time to work in a quiet, pastoral atmosphere.

Their facilities are located on the property where poet Edna St. Vincent Millay lived at the height of her literary career. They have a seven-acre campus with meadows and forest in Austerlitz, New York, USA, adjacent to the former Millay home and gardens and the exquisite Harvey Mountain State Forest.

The Millay Colony provides food for breakfasts, lunches, and weekend dinners, and will happily respond to vegetarian or other dietary requirements. On Monday through Friday evening meals are prepared by an excellent local chef. There is no obligation, however, to be present with the group at the prepared evening meal. They have a share in a nearby bio-dynamic farm and so the bulk of their food is local and farm-fresh.

To Apply: NEW: Online application submission for 2011 Residency Program. http://millaycolony.submishmash.com/submit Application submissions via mail also available for 2011 season. http://www.millaycolony.org/apply

Coming in 2011...Writing Retreats with Mirabee!

Hi gang,

Still sick but getting better. I have a few things to post tomorrow or the day after, mostly new residency deadlines. But today, I just wanted to let you know about a couple things: one, I will unfortunately have to monitor comments again and not let anonymous people comment on my posts because I am getting spammed by stupid people trying to sell things via my blog. Argh. I hate to do that. Anyway, the other thing is that I just wanted to let you know that after my book comes out in 2011, probably next fall, I will start leading memoir and nature writing retreats and workshops in the Berkshires at one of my favorite places in the world, the Staveleigh House. It's run by my friend Ali Winston who is also does animal rescue and takes in various critters (see photo of me and one of the exuberant residents of Staveleigh!) that have been abused or abandoned. You can check out their site here: www.staveleigh.com or click here to see the facebook fan page I just set up for them.

Back Home

Greetings Everyone,

I am back home and sick as a dog so I will post something to you as soon as I get over the flu. Just wanted to thank all of you for your many, many lovely messages of congratulations and all of your bon voyages. I had a great time in Prague and didn't get sick until I got on the plane home, which was quite fortunate!

Talk to you soon....Mirabee

han hoogerbrugge on visions of visionaries

'made' is a concept of a berlin-based artist tadirock, which functions as a creative platform for all forms of cutting-edge art. for its 'visions of visionaries' blog section, 'made' has recently interviewed han hoogerbrugge. after listening to the master's thoughts we can surely state one thing: your goals show some striking resemblance to ours, han... in other words: may the cash be with us! ;-)

9/11: a memorable day

we honor all our friends in america by joining their noble cause this day!
we also wish:
to patrick: save flights, hoping he gets to la in one piece for the 'beyond the street book signing',

& to marianna & vincent: an exciting & explosive wedding (for which we're already running late, shit, shit, shit....)

1st edition of samson & de with qurterly out now!

everything daan samson touches, is an instant success! so there can't be even the slightest doubt that he'll break through also in his newest endeavor - that of a tabloid publisher. the first edition of samson & de with is out now, presenting the rotterdam art star on a tour through the trendy witte de with straat with his first guests, dutch media legend ad visser & his wife. quoting: the evenings with david bowie were great. but a day with daan samson is possibly even better!

(we are raising a humble request to daan, to consider an international edition, along with the dutch one, next time. coz stuff like this should come in 5 languages at least!)

leroy & leroy @ the world expo shanghai 2010

as a part of the shanghai world expo 2010, an international sculpture exhibition opened last week @ the jing'an sculpture park. and the leroy brothers, a.k.a. LplusL, are - together with wim delvoye, jan fabre, arne quinze etc - amongst the 40 selected international artists! they present a white porcelain sculpture titled ostrich of lernae. with its head buried in the ground & its 9 heads coming out, it can be seen as a tong-in-cheek reference to the 'politics of the ostrich' and its die-hard character. the ostrich allegedly symbolizes europe... or does it? ;-)
great stunt, guys!!!

white ghost hounting park avenue!

to coincide with yoshimoto nara's nobody's fool expo @ asia society, nyc, 2 impressive fiberglass & steel sculptures - known together as the white ghost - have been installed on park avenue (height of 67th & 70th st) & are now watching over the passersby. they remain on display till nov 5 this year.

good artists copy, great artists steal :-)

damien hirst
faces, not for the first time, several claims of plagiarism. list includes 'in the name of the father', 'pharmacy', as well as the spin and spot paintings. at least as exciting as the comparison of the individual pieces (see article of charles thomson, co-founder of the stuckists art group), are damien's retorts to these accusations. follow the evolution: 1995: "it's very easy to say, 'i could have done that,' after someone's done it. but i did it. you didn't. it didn't exist until I did it." 2000: "i don't think the hand of the artist is important on any level, because you're trying to communicate an idea." 2006: "lucky for me, when I went to art school we were a generation where we didn't have any shame about stealing other people's ideas. you call it a tribute". 2009: "fuck 'em all!" 2010: hirst declined to comment.

janet hill : artists who blog

I adore Janet's beautiful, dreamy paintings - her color schemes, her still lives of kitchens, pastries, dresses, and shoes from another time. Janet has a lovely sense of humor too, which makes her interview a pleasure to read. Enjoy!

Janet's website: www.janethillstudio.com

Why did you decide to become an artist and could you imagine doing anything else? If so, what?

It was more of a situation that all roads kept leading me towards it.  For many years I tried to be anything but an artist.  Sounds a little odd, but when I was in my fine art program at university, my profs kept telling everyone how difficult it is to be an artist.  There were ugly sacrifices to be made, starvation, rejection, etc, etc.  It didn’t sound very appetizing.   So, I worked in the corporate world, and at one point owned my own retail store, but nothing ever felt right and I kept thinking I was one big fat failure.  Eventually, karma kept kicking me in the head until I listened and just went for it.  Because I’ve done ‘everything else’ I think it’s made me realize that painting is the only profession for me.

Do you still believe "do what you love and the money will come?"

Absolutely!  That’s my mantra.

How has blogging and the Internet affected your work as an artist?

It’s crazy how much the Internet has affected my business.  I never understand when I encounter other artists who don’t have websites or haven’t ever heard of sites like Etsy.  The internet is such a powerful and creative marketing tool and exposes you to the world in just a few clicks.  I’ve discovered that my main buyers are in fact not Canadian (like myself) and instead are American, Australian, and Norwegian.  These are buyers that I never would have had access to if it wasn’t for the internet.  Having a blog and website has also led to other things like magazine coverage, gallery interest, and corporate opportunities.

Please name 3 of your favorite blogs and tell us why these blogs are special.

I tend to jump around a bit, but for the past few weeks I’ve spent time poking around on the following blogs:
simplybreakfast.blogspot.com - I love her photos and it’s always interesting to know what other people eat for breakfast.

absolutelybeautifulthings.blogspot.com -  A classic. I love her sense of style and colour.  Anna also covered my work on her blog a couple of years ago which I think was what helped get me off the ground initially.

dubuhdudesigns.typepad.com - I’ve become obsessed with her gorgeous dolls.  They seem to exist in their own elegant world.  I desperately want one!

What is your greatest fear and what do you do to overcome it?

Flying.  I try to avoid it as best I can, but when there is no other choice booze and sedatives seem to get the job done.

Who would you like to trade places with for one day? Why?

If I could be anyone for a day I would choose Ava Gardner when she was playing Kitty Collins in the 1946 film 'The Killers'.  It just seemed like such an interesting time in Hollywood and Ava was a woman with a lot of sass.

What are your secrets for managing your time wisely?

I don’t.  The only reason why I get anything done is because I basically work every day.  I spend way too much time mucking about on the computer, looking through magazines, emailing friends, shopping online, and staring off into space.  I won’t even discuss ‘snack times’ and ‘cocktail hour’.  I think I’m just a fast painter - thankfully.

If you could live anywhere in the world – all expenses paid – for one year, where would that be? Why?

Maybe Argentina.  Living somewhere with that much good Malbec and good BBQ can’t be a bad thing.

How do you maintain a healthy balance between your professional and private life?

I don’t think I do maintain a healthy balance.  It just seems to all blend together.  I’ve learned to not check my email after 8pm just in case something awful has transpired and I don’t want to lose sleep over it.  My main problem is that my brain doesn’t shut off and ideas are always popping up.  Fortunately my husband is tolerant to my idea outbursts.

What are your top 5 goals that you’d like to accomplish within the next 5 years?

I’m working on a project that will likely take 5 years to complete.  It’s called ‘364 Days of Dresses’ which I hope will end up as a book.  I would also like my husband to quit his job and deal with the business side of what I do.  I think I’m due for a show too, so I would like to start working on pieces for that.  Aside from that my goals are pretty basic like pay off my credit card someday….and take a good vacation.

What is your advice for someone who would like to turn his or her creative dreams into reality?

Stop fiddling about and just do it!

Thank you Janet!
