A stipend of $5,000 and a month long residency at the Blue Mountain Center, an artists colony in Blue Mountain Lake, New York, is given annually to a writer of nonfiction (including creative nonfiction with the exception of memoir) whose work recalls that of Richard J. Margolis, a journalist, essayist, and poet who wrote about those whose voices are seldom heard. Submit two writing samples totaling no more than 30 pages and a project description by July 1. Two $10,000 grants are given annually to emerging lesbian poets and fiction writers. A runner-up in each category will receive a grant of $1,500. Applicants must have published work at least once in a newspaper, magazine, literary journal, or anthology but must not have published more than one book in any genre. A prize of $100,000 is given annually to honor a writer who is a native of Latin America or the Caribbean and writes in Spanish, Portuguese, French, or English or a native of Spain or Portugal who writes in Spanish or Portuguese. Writers who have produced noteworthy work in poetry, fiction, or creative nonfiction are eligible. The prize is awarded by a consortium of Mexican government agencies, universities, and banks. Cultural or educational institutions, associations, or groups interested in literature may nominate a candidate; individuals may not apply. A fourteen-week residency at Lynchburg College, including a stipend of $12,000, is awarded annually to a poet or creative nonfiction writer for the spring term. The residency also includes housing, some meals, and roundtrip travel expenses. The writer-in-residence will teach a weekly creative writing workshop, visit classes, and give a public reading.
