Urgent Deadline: International Low-Residency MFA & Practice-Based PhD

Hi everyone, I wanted to leave Ayun Halliday’s great interview up longer but I just found this announcement below in my spam folder and wanted to get it out there because the deadline is SOON. I also have something really important to post tomorrow or the next day, plus a ton of new opportunities and yet another interview so keep your eyes open for a lot of things this coming week! Also, in a recent post, there were some discrepancies that a diligent and kind reader alerted me to. She said the following regarding the residency at the Islip Art Museum Carriage House:

The Islip Art Museum Carriage House In Process link to http://jasonparadisart.com/ reports different submission specifications that the Islip Art Museum. Also, this curator is requesting that submissions be sent to him directly; the museum site indicates they should be sent directly to the museum. I also just noticed that the deadlines are different. The museum posts December 1, and http://jasonparadisart.com/ posts December 15.

Okay...here’s the deadline I wanted you to know about...oh, one more thing, even during times when I am incredibly busy and cannot post for several days, I almost always at least post a bunch of quick deadlines on twitter and facebook, and many of these are the kinds of things that I don’t post about on my blog, including contests, book prizes, exhibition oppportunities, etc. If you are on Facebook, just go to my Mira’s List page for late-breaking news: http://www.facebook.com/pages/MIRAS-LIST/72394590508 and if the post isn’t too long, it automatically is fed into twitter (my twitter name is miraslist). And on twitter, I often retweet many great opportunities, including arts jobs, from international sources.

(ARTISTS/ STUDENTS) MFA Creative Practice – Three Spaces With Advanced Standing For Spring 2011: Three spaces are available in the MFA program for applicants with graduate level course credits in art, media, design and related fields from other institutions to begin studies in January. With a transfer of a minimum of 15 credits (30 ECTS) accepted applicants can complete the MFA Creative Practice in three semesters by summer 2012. International Low-Residency MFA Program
Transart Institute offers the MFA Creative Practice, a fully accredited international masters program for working artists with summer residencies in Berlin, winter residencies in New York and one-on-one advisement during two academic years - wherever students work and live. Students are free to pursue work in any art-related genre and to create their own course of study, working independently and with the support of self-chosen studio and research advisors. Short periods of intensive residency permit students to continue with their professional work and keep a balanced personal life while participating in the program. The majority of Transart students are emerging and mid-career artists and teachers at tertiary institutions.

The new MFA Creative Practice is a student-centered, project oriented postgraduate art program which fosters independent thinking, risk-taking and the creation of an informed and sustainable art praxis. The Institute is also a platform for faculty to expand their teaching praxis by making space for creativity and experimentation. Beyond its educational objectives, Transart Institute is engaged in building an international community in support of students, alumni, faculty and their artistic and academic goals. The institute offers its former students a virtual and material basis for artistic practice, the exchange of ideas, opportunities and critiques, supporting individual and collective growth beyond the duration of the program.

Scholarships
Several scholarships are available to students of the MFA Creative Practice program: Developing Country Scholarships, Achievement and Merit Scholarships are being awarded. Practice-based PhD
An information session will be held at the Transart Institute winter residency on January 9, 2011 in Brooklyn, New York about admissions and the course of studies for Transart Institute's practice-based PhD expected to begin in July 2011. The session will be by invitation only and 50% of seats will be reserved for graduates of Transart Institute's MFA program. To be considered for the information session please send an email with an outline or draft of your proposal including references and resources along with a short CV or bio to cella@transartinstitute.org. Transart is particularly keen on encouraging proposals from the areas of documentary art making, language/image, software studies and network culture. The proposal should demonstrate systematic study, independence, critical competence and originality. It should include a record of the 'practice' element and also serve to contextualize the practice intellectually while cle arly demonstrating its contribution to knowledge.

Portfolio Review for the MFA Creative Practice
Transart Institute seeks independent, inquisitive and imaginative artist to apply to its MFA Creative Practice program starting summer 2011. Interested artists, teachers and all professionals in related fields who are seeking advancement in visual arts and new media are invited to come to the Transart winter residency (January 7-9, 2011) for feedback on their portfolio as suited for admission. In addition, these sessions will give prospective applicants the opportunity to learn more about the program, attend a public lecture and mingle with Transart faculty and students in person. (LATINO ARTISTS) The National Association of Latino Arts and Culture Fund for the Arts: The NALAC Fund for the Arts awards a small number of fellowships ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 to support artists whose work demonstrates excellence and the potential for
impacting the Latino arts field. Examples of acceptable expenses for NFA fellowships include but are not limited to: costs for the creation or completion of new work, travel, study, professional development, living expenses, equipment, hiring of assistants, costs for documentation, production expenses and maintenance. Projects must begin after January 1, 2011 and must end by December 31, 2011. Deadline September 24, 2010.

(ALL) American Academy in Berlin—Berlin Prize Fellowship: Residential fellowships offer a stipend ranging from $3,500 to $5,000 per month, round-trip airfare, housing at the Academy, and partial board to emerging as well as established scholars, writers, and professionals who wish to engage in independent study in Berlin for an academic semester or in rare cases for an entire academic year. In the case of the Bosch Fellowship in Public Policy, shorter stays of six to eight weeks may be arranged. Fellows are expected to be in residence at the Academy during the entire term of the award. (WRITERS) Bronx Council on the Arts—Writers' Center Fellowship and Residency: The Bronx Writers' Center Fellowship annually awards two nine-month literary fellowships to writers who reside in the Bronx, regardless of age but who are not enrolled as full-time students. An award of $5,000 is given to each winner and a community service project at the Bronx Writers' Center is required. All eligible applicants must submit four copies of a representative body of work of no more than ten pages of poetry or twenty pages of fiction. The work should display professional accomplishment and their commitment to a literary career. Consult the web site for more information. (WRITERS) International Retreat for Writers at Hawthornden Castle: The retreat offers residencies of four weeks for five published creative writers (novelists, poets, playwrights) at a time. (WRITERS) The Fielding Programme Residency: The Fielding Programme is a unique residency opportunity for writers with a project in hand. It offers one-to-one support for your novel, poetry or play in the spectacular setting of Cove Park, Scotland's international artist residency centre. High quality private accommodation, a very small group of fellow writers (max 6) and a friendly convivial atmosphere complete the experience. Come for one week or two depending on your project. (COMIC BOOK /GRAPHIC NOVEL ARTISTS) Xeric Foundation Grants: Grants of up to $5,000 are offered to assist comic book creators with some of the costs of self-publishing (physical production and distribution, printing, color separation, solicitation, shipping). Grants are not intended to support an artist/writer fully through the process of self-publishing, but rather to encourage creators to learn from the experience of working toward such a goal. (WRITERS) The M Literary Residency Program: offers two residencies, one in Shanghai, China and one in Pondicherry, India. The residencies are each three months long and candidates should only apply for one. Both writing fellows receive a total of $1,000 to cover living costs. The program is open to writers of fiction, literary non-fiction, or poetry whose residence in India or China would benefit their work. The program is intended to help foster greater cultural and artistic connections across individuals and communities. ENVIRONMENTAL ARTISTS GRANTS, BERLIN FELLOWSHIPS AND MORE

(ARTISTS) Bernheim Outdoor Art Fellowship
This fellowship is only offered every other year. Bernheim is a beautiful 14,000-acre property located 25 miles south of Louisville, Kentucky. It encompasses a nationally recognized arboretum and 14,000 acres of natural area protecting diverse plant and animal species. Over fifty miles of hiking trails, outdoor exhibits and other facilities offer abundant recreational and inspirational opportunities, which attracts thousands of visitors each year.

The goal in all of Bernheim’s activities is to help realize its mission of strengthening the bond between people and nature by finding new ways to connect nature with people’s everyday lives. The Bernheim Indoor Art Fellowship is given semi-annually to a talented artist who will work within the Forest and/or Arboretum to create works that are inspired by and installed in the natural world. The Fellowship provides the artist an opportunity to advance his or her own skills and career while enhancing awareness of Bernheim’s goals regionally, nationally and internationally. The Fellow recipient is required to live at Bernheim for up to three months while working on his/her project. Bernheim will provide comfortable housing in a beautiful wooded setting, plus a financial grant of up to $2,500.00 to cover travel, and other expenses. The Ledig House International Writers Residency is located approximately two and a half hours north of New York City in the town of Omi, in the scenic Hudson River Valley. Up to twenty writers per session—ten at a given time—live and write on the stunning 300-acre grounds and sculpture park that overlook the Catskill Mountains. PUBLIC ART PROJECT IN BERLIN

Hello dear Readers! I hope you are all well, making art and applying for things out there. I just wanted you to know that there are only a couple days left for you to fill out the two second poll on the right hand side bar of my site AND also to tell you that it looks like my radio show will probably be on Wednesday, June 10th. I'll let you know for sure in the next few days. If all goes well, you should be able to upload the interview sometime soon after the show is aired from my website and the radio station's site as well. By the way, my book is really going out to publishers later this month, which means that I will have more time to write a couple new articles for you, as well as my regular postings. In the meantime, check out this really cool public art project (FOR ALL DISCIPLINES) in Berlin I just heard about. The deadline is SOON—June 12th—so get going!

PUBLIC ART PROJECT IN BERLIN
Neue Gesellschaft fuer Bildende Kunst/New Society for Visual Arts. The new art project on the Berlin Underground, U10 –"From Here to the Imaginary and Back Again," sets a focus on the social and collaborative dimension of public art. Artists or collaborative groups of artists and non-artists are invited to take part in this call for submissions. Preference will be given to artists who see their work as a means of exchange and shared dialogue and who are interested in reaching new audiences. This may include a readiness to collaborate with, for example, groups of BVG staff or passengers who have little experience of contemporary art. The organizers cannot take part in the call themselves. The U10 project will run for a maximum of three years. The organizers are looking for situation specific and/or participatory projects which focus on the Berlin Underground and its staff and/or users. They can range from being short, interventionistic artistic reactions to specific occurrences on the Underground to being long term collaborations. The competition sees members of staff, passengers, kiosk and snack bar owners, buskers and ticket traders not only as a potential audience but also as potential collaborators on a joint research of the Berlin Underground.

This project will be run by Neue Gesellschaft für Bildende Kunst (NBGK) Berlin, in collaboration with the Berlin Underground Train Network (BVG), and financed by Berlin Council's Department of Culture and supported by Wall AG. I'm not sure how much the funding is for this project or whether it includes travel expenses, but you can write them and find out.
