(ARTISTS & PERFORMING ARTISTS) Call for Artist Sowing Seeds 2011—International Artist Village Residency in India—



Visual artists, performing artists, art critics and local community will collaborate to create work about environment and social development in rural Rajasthan (INDIA). There will be opportunities for collaborative work that interacts with the rural environment.



“Sowing Seeds” is a project that intends to create dialogues and exchanges amongst artists beyond their national identity and serves as an opportunity for rural artists to meet, share and exchange ideas, visions, and diverse views in order to create a deeper understanding of art. It acts as a social environment developing and improving the artistic impressions of experts as well as emerging artists. As an alternative art space in INDIA, “Sowing Seeds” is geared to exchange the challenges required to organize such a contemporary artist village residency within rural areas and thus giving rise to a new era in art.

The key to our Artist residency projects will be creating local community collaboration to create works related to environment and social development in the village Gelawas, Barmer, Rajasthan (INDIA). The artist residency will bring together 15 international artists practicing in a wide variety of media, collaboration, outdoor sculpture, documentation, or performing to bring benefit to a specific site and share ideas and methods for a period of 14 days in the village Gelawas, Barmer, Rajasthan (INDIA).

The artists residency will provide the selected artists with full lodging and food, work space, local transportation and a small material stipend.



Residency period—20th December 2011 to 2nd January 2012 [14-days]

* Young and emerging visual artists, performing artists and critics - Artists who are able to stay at village Gelawas for the designated period of time

(BOOK ARTISTS) The National Museum of Women in the Arts is accepting proposals for annual Artist Book Grant, 2012—The Library Fellows Program was established in 1989 to encourage and support the creation of artists’ books and to benefit the Library and Research Center. Although collaborative works are allowed and even encouraged, the artist who is responsible for the overall creation, design and realization of the book must be a woman.

The Fellows’ contributions are used to produce an artist’s book in a limited edition of 125 copies. As a benefit of membership, each Fellow receives a copy of the book. The artists keep 25 copies as a form of remuneration for their creative efforts. The remaining copies are sold and the money generated from the sale benefits the Library and Research Center. Deadline is June 30th!

(WRITERS & ARTISTS) National Park Service - Denali, Alaska—Artist-in-Residence Program—The Artist-in-Residence program at Denali National Park began in 2002, and offers professional artists the opportunity to pursue their work amidst the natural splendors of Denali Park.

Denali National Park and Preserve Seeking Artists-in-Residence for 2012.
Denali National Park and Preserve is seeking applications from visual artists and writers for the 2012 Artist-in-Residence Program. This will be the first season with an open call to writers to submit for a residency. The program is in its eleventh year at Denali, and many of the works created by artists-in-residence from previous years are on display in the Denali Visitor Center and the Eielson Visitor Center.

Selected artists reside in the historic East Fork cabin, located 43 miles into the park, for a ten-day period between June and mid-September. In return for their residency, each artist donates a piece of artwork or written piece that was inspired by their time in the park, to the park’s collection. Artists also offer a public presentation for visitors at the end of their residency.

(ARTISTS, STUDENTS & ART HISTORIANS) The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is currently offering grants for the visual arts and art history. The deadline for applications is Thursday, November 10, 2011.

Award amounts and categories: $8,000 Professional artists, $6,000 Graduate students (including art history students)$4,000 Undergraduate students (including college-bound high school seniors)

Professional artists must be current, legal residents of Virginia and must not be enrolled in a degree-seeking program at the time of the application deadline or the grant period of August 2012-May 2013. Undergraduate students in the visual arts must be current, legal residents of Virginia who will be enrolled full-time in a degree program at an accredited college, university, or school of the arts for the grant period of August 2012-May 2013. (ALL) The Zion National Park Artist in Residence program offers professional artists the opportunity to live and work in the majestic desert environment of southern Utah for a period of four weeks. Artist will also receive a $300 stipend to assist with travel and supply expenses. This call for artists applies to three sessions: October 17-November 13, 2011, February 6-March 4, 2012, or April 2-April 29, 2012, or October 15-November 11, 2012.

The works completed under this program will contribute to the public understanding and appreciation of Zion National Park and should reflect the National Park Service’s mission to the preservation and protection of the park’s cultural and natural resources.

During the Residency period the artist will be expected to present two public programs, tailored to an individual’s medium, interest, and experience. One will take place at Zion Nation Park and the other at Southern Utah University as part of the Art Insights program. See the application materials for more information.

At the conclusion of the Residency, participating artists will donate an original piece from their Residency in Zion National Park to be placed in the Park’s permanent collection.

Who we are:

The Present Group is a triannual art subscription service. Every year TPG subscribers receive three limited edition works from three different contemporary artists. Each work is accompanied by information to help them gain insight into the piece, its creator, and recurring themes in the contemporary art world.

What we are looking for:

Projects that result in a limited edition, an artist multiple, or either a part of or a document of a larger work. Our current edition numbers are under 100. We do not accept proposals for reproductions of paintings. Work must be reproducible in intent. The project will be made exclusively through The Present Group. We understand that similar themes and images may be used throughout your other work, however you agree not to create the exact project in the same form again.

Appreciation for Selected Artists:

* $500 honorarium + production costs

* 4 of the produced work for your own collection or to sell on your own.

* All the contextual information we create for your piece, including artist info, critiques, and video will remain free on-line as long as TPG exists

(PHOTOGRAPHERS & ARTISTS) OSU Post-MFA Fellowships—The Department of Art at Ohio State University is offering 2 Post-MFA Fellowships in 2011-12. One fellowship will be focused in Photography. Another fellowship is available and open to artists working in all mediums. These fellowships include an $18,000 stipend to support the individual while in residence at OSU. Additional remuneration is possible through adjunct teaching assignments, based on program need. 24-hour access to studio space, opportunities to collaborate with other centers, and borrowing privileges from the campus libraries. (WRITERS) The ArtsEdge Residency Project—now accepting applications for the ARTSEDGE RESIDENCY PROJECT, a joint venture of the Kelly Writers House and Penn’s Facilities and Real Estate Services: http://writing.upenn.edu/wh/involved/awards/artsedge/. DEADLINE: April 29, 2011.

The ARTSEDGE PROJECT offers a one year residency for an emerging writer. The residency includes a subsidized apartment at 40th and Chestnut, (writer pays less than half the rent), studio/writing space in the AIR Space artistic nexus, and close affiliation with Penn’s writing communities.

(ALL) Vermont Studio Center—Founded by artists in 1984, the Vermont Studio Center is the largest international artists' and writers' Residency Program in the United States, hosting 50 visual artists and writers each month from across the country and around the world. The Studio Center provides 4-12 week studio residencies on an historic 30-building campus along the Gihon River in Johnson, Vermont, a village in the heart of the northern Green Mountains.

Vermont Studio Center awards a number of fellowships for 8-week residencies to international residents from specific countries through the generous support of the Freeman Foundation, the Shelley and Donald Rubin Foundation and the Robert Sterling Clark Foundation. Each residency award comes with round-trip air travel, travelers health insurance, an exhibition in the Red Mill Gallery, and other benefits depending on the award. (LATINO ARTISTS) The National Association of Latino Arts and Culture Fund for the Arts: The NALAC Fund for the Arts awards a small number of fellowships ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 to support artists whose work demonstrates excellence and the potential for
impacting the Latino arts field. Examples of acceptable expenses for NFA fellowships include but are not limited to: costs for the creation or completion of new work, travel, study, professional development, living expenses, equipment, hiring of assistants, costs for documentation, production expenses and maintenance. Projects must begin after January 1, 2011 and must end by December 31, 2011. Deadline September 24, 2010.

(ALL) American Academy in Berlin—Berlin Prize Fellowship: Residential fellowships offer a stipend ranging from $3,500 to $5,000 per month, round-trip airfare, housing at the Academy, and partial board to emerging as well as established scholars, writers, and professionals who wish to engage in independent study in Berlin for an academic semester or in rare cases for an entire academic year. In the case of the Bosch Fellowship in Public Policy, shorter stays of six to eight weeks may be arranged. Fellows are expected to be in residence at the Academy during the entire term of the award. (WRITERS) Bronx Council on the Arts—Writers' Center Fellowship and Residency: The Bronx Writers' Center Fellowship annually awards two nine-month literary fellowships to writers who reside in the Bronx, regardless of age but who are not enrolled as full-time students. An award of $5,000 is given to each winner and a community service project at the Bronx Writers' Center is required. All eligible applicants must submit four copies of a representative body of work of no more than ten pages of poetry or twenty pages of fiction. (WRITERS) The Fielding Programme Residency: The Fielding Programme is a unique residency opportunity for writers with a project in hand. It offers one-to-one support for your novel, poetry or play in the spectacular setting of Cove Park, Scotland's international artist residency centre. High quality private accommodation, a very small group of fellow writers (max 6) and a friendly convivial atmosphere complete the experience. Come for one week or two depending on your project. (COMIC BOOK /GRAPHIC NOVEL ARTISTS) Xeric Foundation Grants: Grants of up to $5,000 are offered to assist comic book creators with some of the costs of self-publishing (physical production and distribution, printing, color separation, solicitation, shipping). Grants are not intended to support an artist/writer fully through the process of self-publishing, but rather to encourage creators to learn from the experience of working toward such a goal. (WRITERS) The M Literary Residency Program: offers two residencies, one in Shanghai, China and one in Pondicherry, India. RESIDENCIES IN INDIA, SARDINIA, ESTONIA AND MORE!

(ALL) Le Ville Matte Residency Program in Sardinia, Italy: International call for the residency program in Cagliari, Sardenia, Italy. The program for visual artists will take place in Sardinia from 14 April to 15 May 2010 in Villasor, a town a few kilometers from Cagliari. This initiative is part of LE VILLE MATTE – artist residencies, a wider project promoted by the Province of Cagliari, through the Cultural Policy Office, with the purpose of offering artistic study and research residencies in Sardinia, stimulating new productions in the field of music, writing and visual arts. The call is open to artists from all over the world, with no age limit (but the applicants must be over eighteen). Deadline for visual artists: February 28th, 2010!

Participation in the residency program is free, and includes the following services: a studio with internet connection; open space area for group activity; town library and multimedia library for documentation; production expenses managed by the visiting professor on the basis of each artist's requirements. (ARTISTS) Polymer International Artist-in-Residency Program in Estonia: Culture Factory Polymer, a multidisciplinary cultural center in Tallinn, Estonia, situated in an old toy factory, is now accepting proposals for it’s international artist in residency program. Artists (both groups and individuals) from any country and all artistic fields are welcome to apply for a residency at Polymer. Their interest lies in genre bending, cross-cultural exchange and interaction with the local artistic community through workshops and public dissemination. (ARTISTS) The Rocky Neck Art Colony in Gloucester, MA: is currently accepting applications from visual artists for the sixth year of the Goetemann Residency at Rocky Neck Art Colony Program, which runs from June 1 through October 7, 2010. The artists selected will evidence high-level accomplishment, originality and seriousness of purpose. One applicant will be selected for each of three four-week residency terms. The program includes prime studio/gallery/living space (including utilities), press coverage, art sales opportunities, and access to a rich cultural community. Deadline is March 15th, 2010. TRAVEL FUNDING & INTERNATIONAL RESIDENCIES

Dear Gentle Readers,

Every day I get dozens of letters asking me how to find money for research/art trips overseas or to help fund international residencies. I'll be honest with you: this is one of the hardest things to find money for. In most cases, you have to be really creative in your search. First, see what is out there. Please use my links on my side bar, listed under "Funding for Travel and Research." Also, go to transartists.org and click under "funding" to see what foundations might fund overseas travel. Check with the embassy of the country you want to visit, or the cultural institute connected to the embassy. I got three language scholarships to Italy that way several years ago.



Another thing to try, after everything else, (including doing a google search for "travel grants artists" or something like that) is to google without using the words "writer" or "artist" and so on. You will most likely be sent to a university grant database and it is highly possible that you could find a travel grant in the humanities that would work for you. Don't be put off by academic library databases and the phrases they use, like "PhD candidates only or those with professional equivalent." If you are a professional artist of some kind, you just might qualify. Most practicing artists do not have a PhD anyway, nor do most writers/filmmakers, etc. Start by looking under "humanities" on these databases and you might find the right grant. On my links, I have the Michigan State University Library listed but there are many, many others. Some of you read my article on Fulbright grants and discovered that I got a Fulbright to go to Norway as an "independent scholar," even though I did not have a PhD. Do not fear academia! Make academia work for you. And PLEASE check out those links I set up for you. It will make my job (which I don't get paid for, mind you) a bit easier. And please read my FAQs before writing me a question that I might have already answered. Sorry to belabor this point but the more you figure out for yourself, the more resourceful and successful you will be in the long run. I still welcome letters, so fear not! It's just that sometimes it is clear to me that some people want me to do their work for them and I really can't.



One more thing on trying to find money for travel...you have to be imaginative and also plan WAY in advance. I can't tell you how many letters I get from people saying they got accepted to a residency in another country but don't have enough money for the plane ticket. They usually write me a month before they have to go. Plan a YEAR in advance if you can. And why not apply for another kind of grant, say, one that could pay your living expenses for a couple months---use that grant to pay for what it is for and then in the meantime, save the money you would have used for living expenses to buy that ticket to Spain or wherever your residency is. (SCHOLARS) Short-term Research Travel Grants to Japan

The Northeast Asia Council (NEAC) of the Association for Asian Studies, in conjunction with the Japan-US Friendship Commission, supports a variety of grant programs in Japanese studies designed to facilitate the research of individual scholars, to improve the quality of teaching about Japan on both the college and precollege levels, and to integrate the study of Japan into the major academic disciplines. Please Note: Applicants in this category must be current AAS members. Grants of a maximum of $3,000 are available to cover expenses WHILE IN JAPAN conducting a specific project explicitly related to Japan which can be accomplished in the period of time requested. These grants are intended for short-term research trips by scholars who are already familiar with Japan and with their topic, but who need time in Japan in order to complete their work. Grantees are expected to seek supplementary funds from other sources and must include a detailed budget with their application. (UK & JAPANESE ARTISTS) The Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation Grants

The Foundation awards grants to individuals and institutions in the UK and Japan in all areas of the visual and performing arts, the humanities, the social sciences, science and engineering, mathematics, business studies, and education, including schools and universities, and grass roots and professional groups. HISTORICAL RESEARCH: Hodson-Brown Fellowship
The Hodson-Brown fellowship supports work by scholars and writers working on significant projects relating to the literature, history, culture, or art of the Americas before 1830. It is also open to filmmakers, novelists, creative and performing artists, and others working on projects that draw on this period of history. The fellowship award supports two months of research (in Providence, R.I.) and two months of writing (at Washington College in Chestertown, Md). Housing and university privileges will be provided. The Council administers the Department of State-sponsored Fulbright Scholar Program for advanced research and university lecturing in more than 1,400 countries around the world.
