Calling all Writers, Artists, Printmakers, Composers and Everyone Else!

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your patience lately. I'm going to be pretty busy and/or wiped out until my book tour is over, at the end of April. I'll do the best I can posting things here and there on weeks when I have fewer events. Speaking of events, if any of you are in the Boston area, I will be reading from my new book, The Memory Palace, tomorrow night, January 18th, at 7 pm at Harvard Book Store at 1256 Mass. Ave. in Cambridge. On Thursday, January 20th, I'll be reading and signing books at River Run Book Store in Portsmouth, New Hampshire (7 pm also). Here are a couple things that just came in....and keep in mind that I post late-breaking news on the Mira's List community fan page on Face Book. You will not get this info by friending me on facebook but by going to that community page. I don't respond to facebook requests unless I know people or you are a friend of a friend. And since the Terry Gross interview on the radio, I am getting about fifty friend requests a day and frankly, it's a bit overwhelming to say the least! (ALL) ART342 Residencies: now accepting artist-in-residence applications for Summer 2011. Residency dates: May 16 - August 19, 2011. On-line application: https://art342.slideroom.com/ Deadline: February 14, 2011. ART342 offers 14-week residencies to emerging and established artists, writers and composers. Studios, a kiln and basic equipment are available for most visual artists, including ceramicists. Quiet spaces exist for creative or scholarly writers. The composer’s studio is outfitted with a Steinway B, computers and software for writing and recording.

Awards for accepted applicants include 24-hour access to free studios, living space and a modest stipend. Residents are responsible for personal expenses and travel to and from the site. Situated in a semi-rural area, ART342 is just 6 miles north of Historic Old Town in Fort Collins. Up to 7 studios and 5 living spaces are maintained as private places for creative work. smARTpower, will send fifteen U.S. artists abroad to work with local artists and young people around the world to create community-based art projects. Travel opportunities of up to 45 days will be awarded to selected artists to design and develop programs in cooperation with local arts organizations in host countries including China, Ecuador, Egypt, Ghana, India, Kosovo, Lebanon, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Turkey, and Venezuela. smARTpower will support the development and implementation of community-based art projects that engage youth and other local residents, including artists. The projects are strongly encouraged to create a tangible legacy of the work accomplished through smARTpower in a variety of visual arts media, including but not limited to painting, sculpture, drawing, video, installation, photo-based work, public art, and interdisciplinary projects. Participatory work is strongly recommended and encouraged. Artists will address a full range of relevant subjects including, but not limited to, women's empowerment, the environment, health, education, and civic engagement.

Emerging to established artists are encouraged to apply. Finalists will be identified through open competition and selected by a national advisory panel of artists and art professionals. Each recipient will be provided with an honorarium, travel funding, a budget for materials, resources for documentation (including photography, video, and web posting), and on-site logistical support. Proposals must be submitted ONLINE ONLY by midnight, February 28, 2011. (WRITERS) National Endowment for the Arts: Literature Fellowships—The NEA Literature Fellowships program offers $25,000 grants in prose (fiction and creative nonfiction) and poetry to published creative writers that enable the recipients to set
aside time for writing, research, travel, and general career advancement. The NEA Literature Fellowships program operates on a two-year cycle with fellowships in prose and poetry available in alternating years. For FY 2012, which is covered by these guidelines, fellowships in prose are available. Fellowships in poetry will be offered in FY 2013 and guidelines

RESIDENCIES IN INDIA, SARDINIA, ESTONIA AND MORE!

Hi there...I'm still on deadline and walking around like a headless chicken but gee whiz I missed you...so I thought I'd send you all a couple little residency notices that have come my way. More stuff this coming week, particularly for musicians....and once again, sorry if the formatting is funky. I still have to figure out how to copy and paste from other sources on Blogger without everything going all wonky on me.

(ALL) Le Ville Matte Residency Program in Sardinia, Italy: International call for the residency program in Cagliari, Sardenia, Italy. The program for visual artists will take place in Sardinia from 14 April to 15 May 2010 in Villasor, a town a few kilometers from Cagliari. This initiative is part of LE VILLE MATTE – artist residencies, a wider project promoted by the Province of Cagliari, through the Cultural Policy Office, with the purpose of offering artistic study and research residencies in Sardinia, stimulating new productions in the field of music, writing and visual arts. The call is open to artists from all over the world, with no age limit (but the applicants must be over eighteen). Deadline for visual artists: February 28th, 2010!

Participation in the residency program is free, and includes the following services: a studio with internet connection; open space area for group activity; town library and multimedia library for documentation; production expenses managed by the visiting professor on the basis of each artist's requirements. LE VILLE MATTE includes other two residencies: one dedicated to music, from 25 June to 24 July 2010, and one dedicated to writing, scheduled between September and October 2010. At the end of the entire project a final publication will be released.

(ARTISTS) Polymer International Artist-in-Residency Program in Estonia: Culture Factory Polymer, a multidisciplinary cultural center in Tallinn, Estonia, situated in an old toy factory, is now accepting proposals for it’s international artist in residency program. Artists (both groups and individuals) from any country and all artistic fields are welcome to apply for a residency at Polymer. Their interest lies in genre bending, cross-cultural exchange and interaction with the local artistic community through workshops and public dissemination. (ARTISTS/CURATORS) CURATE THIS! 2010: is the second installment of the CURATE THIS! exhibition series created by BECA: Bridge for Emerging Contemporary Art. It has evolved from one exhibition location into a global art + design exhibition and arts + cultural exchange event located in multiple cities around the world from July 1 – December 31, 2010. Through the introduction and exhibition of works of new art + new design and related projects by artists, designers, duos, groups and collectives around the world, The BECA Foundation aims to facilitate an experimental, cross-pollination of new ideas for creative innovation in diverse locations around the world. (ARTISTS) The Rocky Neck Art Colony in Gloucester, MA: is currently accepting applications from visual artists for the sixth year of the Goetemann Residency at Rocky Neck Art Colony Program, which runs from June 1 through October 7, 2010. The artists selected will evidence high-level accomplishment, originality and seriousness of purpose. One applicant will be selected for each of three four-week residency terms. The program includes prime studio/gallery/living space (including utilities), press coverage, art sales opportunities, and access to a rich cultural community. Deadline is March 15th, 2010. (ARTISTS) Hasta Gallery Summer Residencies in India: One to three month residencies open to all International artists. Residencies are near the port city of Mangalore, India. A prize of $2,000 and a two-month residency at Robert Frost’s former home in Franconia, New Hampshire, is given annually to a poet who has published at least one poetry collection. (WRITERS) Richard J. Margolis Award
A stipend of $5,000 and a monthlong residency at the Blue Mountain Center, an artists colony in Blue Mountain Lake, New York, is given annually to a writer of nonfiction (including creative nonfiction with the exception of memoir) whose work recalls that of Richard J. Margolis, a journalist, essayist, and poet who wrote about those whose voices are seldom heard. Submit three copies of two writing samples totaling no more than 30 pages and a project description by July 1, 2009. There is no entry fee. Send an SASE or visit the Web site for complete guidelines. The Experimental Television Center next deadline for the Residency Program is July 15, 2009, for residencies between September 2009 and January 2010. The Residency supports contemporary electronic media art projects. The studio workshop environment offers access to an image processing system, intensive individualized instruction and time for exploration and personal creative growth. Artists are invited to submit proposals based on the idea of sustainability, both in material and in community. Join ArtCorps and volunteer your creative talents to strengthen sustainable development in Central America in 2010. Through community arts projects, artists educate and inspire people to participate actively in improving the environmental, health, and social conditions in their communities. Every ArtCorps artist works directly with a local non-governmental organization that is an expert in its field. Artists strengthen dialogue between community members and the organization, improve community education and empower local leadership.

Artists will:
* Work as a volunteer and live in his or her host community from January 2010 through December 2010. Artists have the option to extend their stay for a second year if agreed upon by the host organization.
* Receive airfare, room and board, medical insurance and a small personal stipend.
* Receive training and technical assistance from ArtCorps staff in the region in order to integrate ArtCorps methodology into the host organization.
* Uphold the mission and values of ArtCorps as the sole ArtCorps artist in the host community.
* Communicate fluently in Spanish.

(BOSTON VISUAL ARTISTS) Artadia Awards Deadline!
Hurry up, the applications close Monday, June 15, 2009 for the Artadia Awards for Boston area artists! Artists must be living and working in metro Boston. Individual artists and collaboratives working in all media and at any point in their career are strongly encouraged to apply. Awardees will be selected in the summer of 2009 through Artadia’s two-tiered jury process. For eligibility requirements, and to access the web-based application, please visit Artadia's website: www.artadia.org. All applications must be submitted online by Monday, June 15, 2009 at 11:59pm (EST). Artadia’s mission is to encourage innovative practice and meaningful dialogue across the United States by providing visual artists in specific communities with unrestricted awards and a national network of support. Since its founding, Artadia has awarded over $2.0 million to more than 200 artists in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, and the San Francisco Bay Area. Most recently Artadia launched an artist residency
program, which brings Artadia Awardees from each of its program cities to New York for a three-month residency at the International Studio and Curatorial Program (ISCP), Brooklyn.

INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL GRANTS AND MORE!

***Insider's Tip: for this first grant, the LIAP grant for international travel: It will help your application immensely if you propose to collaborate somehow with local artists OR somehow involve a community in the country you want to travel to. Collaborative involvement can mean many things, from offering some workshops or professional presentations to local residents, to collaborating on an installation with other artists in the area, etc. Another little tidbit: although preference is given to people who haven't traveled that much as well as artists from Kansas City and the midwest, if your project is innovative, somehow involves the local community, and isn't in a developed country, you have a much better chance to get a grant (but they have to like your work too!).

(VISUAL ARTISTS) Lighton International Artists Exchange Grant
This grant, which offers up to $5,000 for international travel, is sponsered by the Kansas City Artists Coalition. The Lighton International Artists Exchange Program works to make the world a smaller place by giving artists of different cultures the opportunity to work together in the hope that lasting friendship and understanding will develop. The program provides support for visual artists and arts professionals to travel to international residencies and artist communities and for foreign visual artists to travel to and work in the United States. The program seeks applications from dedicated American artists who create work of exceptional quality and whose work and career is at a level to benefit from international exchange with peers. The program is especially interested in funding artists who have not yet worked in a foreign country and in funding travel and residencies to countries that are less westernized. International artists who want to apply for funding for a Kansas City residency may submit inquiries to JanetSimpson@ KansasCityArtistsCoalition.org. The next deadline for travel grants is August 15, (not a postmark deadline). Artists should apply 6-12 months prior to intended travel dates. Notification will be mailed two months after deadlines. The L.I.A.P also offers Money for Artists Promotion grants to assist artists in promoting and marketing their artwork. The program is especially interested in funding artists whose application displays innovative and creative approaches to artist promotion. Artists must be members of the Kansas City Artists Coalition. The maximum m.a.p. grant is $1,000. Applications will be accepted and reviewed on an ongoing basis. Artists should apply 2-6 months prior to intended project dates (if applicable).

(ALL DISCIPLINES) European Cultural Foundation Grant
This grant supports outstanding artistic projects which show vision in illuminating the issues of diversity in Europe. Average grant: Euro 30 000 - Euro 60 000. Artists and organizations working in any artistic discipline, and residing/based in Europe are eligible (i.e. European Union and the neighboring regions) as well as individual artists who have a demonstrable track record in their chosen discipline (at least 5 years experience). ECF is looking for: • Projects that reflect on European developments in an innovative way. We need artists to comment on, research, question, imagine and fantasize about what is happening in European societies: in the cities, among and within communities, across borders. • Projects that reveal an innovative creation process and a visible end product. We are looking for artistic visions, ideas, answers, works on how Europe should/could relate to its diversities. • Projects that have a legacy for the future. This means that one-off events are unlikely to be supported unless they have clear impact and are sustainable within the context. (MUSICIANS) New Technology Grant
Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation/New Technology Funding Program: Grants of up to $75,000 each will be awarded to jazz musicians and nonprofits using technology to develop audience, communications, marketing, distribution channels, and networking for jazz performance. Planning and implementation grants available. Applicants must be jazz artists who are citizens or permanent residents of the U.S., or be a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization (or an organizations with eligible fiscal sponsor) with a history of programming jazz or providing services to jazz artists or jazz organizations. (COMM.-BASED ARTISTS) Transnational Cultural Remittances Grant Program
NALAC'S Transnational Cultural Remittances Grant Program funds project and planning grants to strengthen the exchange of art and culture between communities linked by people's migration from one country to another. This program is available to individuals, collectives, and community-based organizations that are engaged in the practical of exchange of culture through transnational community connections developed and maintained by culturally and economically-linked communities. Projects demonstrating an ongoing connection between two or more of the following countries will be considered: Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, and the United States. Grants range anywhere from $2,000 up to $20,000. Artists and non-governmental agencies (NGOs) in any of the countries listed may apply. Applicants do not have to include the United States to be considered. Projects are open to numerous possibilities. The NALAC also offers grants that provide financial support to Latino working artists and Latino arts organizations through direct training and technical assistance. Grants range from $2,500 to $10,000. A Master Arts Grant is also offered to recognize an established Latino artist for his/her work in their community, and to provide support that enables the Master Artist to serve as a mentor to another artist in the community. (AFRICAN AMERICAN ARTISTS) William H. Johnson Prize
The William H. Johnson Foundation for the Arts is a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization that seeks to encourage African American artists early in their careers through its annual award, The William H. Johnson Prize. Early career African American artists who work in painting, photography, sculpture, printmaking, installation and/or new genre are eligible to apply. "Early career" is interpreted liberally to include artists who have finished their academic work and who have produced mature work for less than ten years. Age is not determinative, and artists may already have been included in gallery or museum exhibitions. http://www.whjohnsongrant.org. Deadline: July 31, 2009.

(FILMMAKERS) Feature-Film Production Grants
The Global Film Initiative announces the Summer 2009 cycle feature-film Production Grants Program in its continuing effort to promote original filmmaking from individuals around the world. Grants are awarded twice a year to filmmakers whose work exhibits artistic excellence, authentic self-representation, and accomplished story-telling. The Grants Program furthers the development of local film industries while offering audiences a variety of cultural perspectives on daily life from around the world. Grants received are used to support the completion of film production, and to subsidize post-production costs. Grants up to $10,000. Grants are not available for documentary or short films, and are only available to the following regions: Latin American, the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East (excluding Iran), Asia (excluding Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan), and Oceania (excluding Australia and New Zealand. (UK ARTISTS) Innovative Arts Project Grants
The Elephant Trust was set up to make it possible for artists and those presenting their work to undertake and complete projects when frustrated by lack of funds. It is committed to helping artists and institutions that depart from the routine and signal new, distinct and imaginative sets of possibilities. Given the Trust’s modest resources, grants have usually been limited to £2,000 but larger grants may be considered. Funding priority is given to artists and to small organisations and galleries. No grants are available for educational or other study purposes. / No grants are available for residencies or research. / No grants are available for projects taking place outside the UK. CROSS CULTURAL COLLABORATIONS IN GHANA

ALL DISCIPLINES: Cross Cultural Collaborative, Inc. is a non-profit educational organization that promotes cultural exchange and understanding. Their programs emphasize multi-generational and multicultural collaborations. CCC brings artists from different cultures together in a supportive environment where they can get to know each other through the language of art. At the core of their program is the belief that interaction between African and non-African artists enriches the creativity of both groups. CCC, Inc. invites artists and scholars from all over the world to work with Ghanaians on collaborative projects that range from mosaic walls to documentary films.

Cross Cultural Collaborative, Inc. is a research center and meeting place for exhibits, community based art workshops, performances, conferences, classes and other venues that relate to cultural awareness and appreciation. Workshops are held at the CCC, Inc. center located on the ocean in a suburb of Accra. They provide double occupancy guest rooms with private bath, studio space and gallery space.
