Fall Deadlines for Residencies and Grants!

Hey everyone....this is a big time for applications. Many residencies have September 15th deadlines. Some of you have recently written me asking about whether or not there are residencies in particular countries. Unfortunately, contrary to public opinion, my encyclopedic mind is not what it used to be. However, you are in luck—you can find the residency of your dreams by going to these websites and searching for the locations you are interested in: Res Artis, Trans Artists, and the Alliance of Artists Communities. And for now, check out some new opportunities below....





(ALL) Hambidge Creative Residency—The Hambidge Center for the Arts and Sciences is located in the Blue Ridge Moutains of North Georgia, USA. Deadline: September 15th for mid-February thru April. Eight-week residencies will only be scheduled in late fall, winter and early spring. This requirement may be waived under extenuating circumstances. Please note: due to high demand, the maximum length of residencies awarded for mid-May, through mid-August is four weeks. Applications for one week residencies are considered on a case-by-case basis. Collaborators must submit individual applications, but may choose to share studio/living space. There is a $30 application fee. For more info, go to: http://www.hambidge.org/.

(ALL) ART 342 Residencies in Fort Collins, CO—ART342 offers 14-week and 6-week residencies to emerging and established artists, writers and composers. Studios, a kiln and basic equipment are available for most visual artists, including ceramicists. Quiet spaces exist for creative or scholarly writers. The composer’s studio is outfitted with a Steinway B, computers and software for writing and recording.



Awards for accepted applicants include 24-hour access to free studios, living space and a modest stipend. Residents are responsible for personal expenses and travel to and from the site. Situated in a semi-rural area, ART342 is just 6 miles north of Historic Old Town in Fort Collins. Up to 7 studios and 5 living spaces are maintained as private places for creative work. Pets, children, visitors and partners are strongly discouraged.

(ALL) BijlmAIR Artist-in-Residence Programme—Centrum Beeldende Kunst Zuidoost (CBK Zuidoost – center of visual arts), Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam (SMBA) and Stichting FLAT (FLAT foundation).

For 2011 BijlmAIR invites artists and other cultural producers to live and work temporarily in Amsterdam Southeast. This period can be used for project research or for realization of a project or work of art, following a relevant proposal made by the applicant. The selection committee of the participating organizations decides which proposals will be chosen.

The residency needs to relate to the transnational and intercultural society of Amsterdam Southeast. This can be done on all kinds of levels – urban, sociological, economical, historical, etc. The programme is primarily meant for young artists from the Netherlands and abroad, who finished their art education recently and are almost ready to enter the circuit of the larger art institutions.

Location

BijlmAIR has a studio in Amsterdam Southeast, on the first floor of an apartment building called Florijn. The ground floor apartments of this building are all artists studio’s. The artists who participate in Stichting FLAT are neighbours of our studio. The studio is suitable for one or two artists. Kitchen, toilet and presentation space are shared with the office of Stichting FLAT. Stichting FLAT frequently organizes events in the presentation space of the apartment.

DEADLINE: You can apply the until the 15^th of September for a residency in 2012.

APPLICATION: The application consists of a project plan (max. 1 page), completed with an indicative budget (costs and income) and a selection of relevant images to support your idea and which gives an insight in your work. The project plan concerns a living- and working period in Amsterdam Southeast.

MONEY

BijlmAIR provides a furnished and well-equipped living and working space. On top there is a modest working budget of € 10.000,- available for the whole year. The height of the budget per artist depends on the number of proposals which are granted. We expect the artist to do his/her own fundraising, if necessary.

(PHOTOGRAPHERS) LIGHT WORK RESIDENCY PROGRAM—Each year Light Work invites 12-15 artists to participate in its residency program, including one artist co-sponsored by Autograph ABP. Artists selected for the residency program are invited to live in Syracuse for one month. They receive a $4,000 stipend, an apartment to stay in, a private digital studio, a private darkroom, and 24-hour access to our facility.

(WRITERS & TRANSLATORS) Ledig House International Writers' Residency—Ledig House International Writers' Residency is located approximately two and a half hours north of New York City in the town of Omi, in the scenic Hudson River Valley. Writers and translators from all fields are encouraged to apply for a residence lasting anywhere from one week to two months. Up to 20 writers per session - 10 at a given time - live and write on the stunning 300 acre grounds and sculpture park that overlook the Catskill Mountains. (ALL) Fogo Island Arts Corporation Residency Program 2012-2013—The Fogo Island Arts Corporation is a new contemporary art venue on the east coast of Canada. The Arts Corporation runs two distinct yet complementary programs, the Residency program and the Production program. Both programs encourage dialogue between visiting artists and local people to share experiences and perceptions.

The Fogo Island Arts Corporation's mission to bring together local communities and the international art scene is reflected in the accommodations and work space provided to Residency Program participants. (MEDIA ARTS/SOUND ARTISTS/SCULPTORS) Nodar Artist Residency Program—Binaural is a Portuguese non-profit Cultural Organization founded in 2004 with the aim of promoting the exploration and research in sound / visual and new media arts, focusing on the crossing of media and languages and on the articulation between the artistic production and the surrounding context, particularly through its activities in the rural space of Nodar.

Rural Architechtures: The 2012 Nodar Artist Residency Program will specifically explore the interactions between landscape, architecture and sound in the rural context of the Gralheira Mountains, municipality of São Pedro do Sul.

(NATIVE AMERICAN ARTISTS) First Peoples Fund Invites Applications for Artist in Business Leadership Program—The First Peoples Fund’s Artist in Business Leadership Program is designed to help entrepreneurial Native American artists develop their marketing and business skills and build self-sustaining, arts-based businesses.

This one-year, self-directed program provides a working capital grant of up to $5,000 to support work on a marketing plan/strategy or business goal as defined by the artist applicant. Additional program benefits include technical assistance, a professional network of peers, and travel expenses to FPF’s professional development workshops. The fellowship places emphasis on new works to stimulate creativity and a renewal of energy in Native art expression.

Applicants must be members of a Northern Great Plains tribe located in South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Minnesota, Nebraska, the Eastern Plateau region of Idaho, Oregon, or Washington; a tribe from the Great Lakes region of Minnesota, Michigan, or Wisconsin; a tribe belonging to the U.S. Eastern Seaboard states; or a Hawaiian or Alaska Native. (NEW MEDIA) New Arts in Media Grant—The National Endowment for the Arts is accepting applications for their new Arts in Media category open to mobile technology, digital games, and other platforms. Grants are available to support the development, production, and national distribution of innovative media projects about the arts and media projects that can be considered works of art. Grants generally will range from $10,000 to $200,000, based on the platform and the complexity and scope of the project. (PHOTOGRAPHERS) Vision Quest Residency—Vision Quest Photo Workshops announces a new yearly grant of a one-week photographic artist’s residency. This grant provides mid-career fine-art photographers a retreat-like experience to work on their art, reflect on their artistic direction, make new photographs, plan new career paths, or to simply have time away from work/family/life pressure and stress. Photographers can use this time to move their art or career forward or to reflect on where they are at and where they are headed.

The artist will stay in a very private retreat in the woods along the banks of a pristine sand-bottom river, located near Grantsburg, Wisconsin (about an hour drive from the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul). The residency will include a private consultation, in person or via phone, with Vision Quest Photo Workshops founder and director Douglas Beasley before the week begins and after its conclusion. Money for Photographers and Emerging Writers

(PHOTOGRAPHERS) The W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography is presented annually to a photographer whose past work and proposed project, as judged by a panel of experts, follows the tradition of W. Eugene Smith’s concerned photography and dedicated compassion exhibited during his 45-year career as a photographic essayist.

The W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund independently administers the grant program that provides photographers with the financial freedom to carry out or complete major photographic essays. For 2011, the amount of the grant will be $30,000. An additional $5,000 in fellowship money will be dispersed, at the discretion of the jury, to one or more finalists deemed worthy of special recognition. Awards will be presented in a ceremony held in New York City in early October. DEADLINE MAY 31st!

(WRITERS) The Elizabeth George Foundation makes artistic grants to unpublished fiction writers, to poets, to emerging playwrights and to organizations benefiting disadvantaged youth. These grants cover expenses in a number of areas.

We offer financial support to unpublished and emerging writers for a period not to exceed a year; we offer scholarships for students to attend accredited MFA programs in creative writing; we support writing research; we offer funding to allow unpublished and emerging writers to attend writers’ retreats and conferences. The Foundation also makes grants to organizations offering services to disadvantaged youth in the areas of health, education, and creative writing. While the Foundation makes grants to support emerging playwrights, the Foundation does not make grants to theatrical groups seeking support for a production.

To be considered for a grant, applicants must send a package of materials to the Foundation by July 1. It must contain the following:

- A letter that fully describes the project the applicant wishes to be funded
- A recent CV that also includes the names, titles, addresses and phone numbers of at least five professional references
- A complete first chapter of the applicant’s book or a completed short story OR a selection of the applicant’s poetry or published chapbook OR a one-act play the applicant has written

(PHOTOGRAPHERS) Howard Fellowship—Stipends of $30,000 will be awarded to support photographers working on projects for the academic year 2011-2012. Howard Fellowships are intended primarily to provide artists and scholars with time to complete their work. They are not intended for publication subsidies, for equipment purchase, for preparation of exhibits, or to support institutional programs. There are no residency requirements for individuals who receive awards. The deadline for submission of applications is November 1, 2011. (ARTISTS & WRITERS) Sustainable Arts Foundation 2011 Awards— In recognition of the challenges of leading a creative life while raising children, the Sustainable Arts Foundation provides financial support to writers and artists with families. They offer a number of $6,000 awards in both the Spring and in Winter. The applicant must have at least one child under the age of 18. They welcome applications from anywhere, but give some preference to residents of the San Francisco Bay area. In addition, they award a number of Promise Awards of smaller dollar figures to applicants whose work may not qualify for the main awards, but demonstrates both skill and potential. As with most grants, your portfolio aids the judges to rank you. They are also interested in hearing about your plans and how this award might assist you in attaining your goals. (WOMEN/PHOTOGRAPHERS) Magnum Foundation and Inge Morath Foundation - Inge Morath Award 2011—The Magnum Foundation and the Inge Morath Foundation announce the tenth annual Inge Morath Award. The annual prize of $5,000 is awarded by the Magnum Foundation to a female documentary photographer under the age of 30, to support the completion of a long-term documentary project. One award winner and up to two finalists are selected by a jury composed of Magnum photographers. Deadline: 30 April, 2011! (WOMEN ARTISTS) New Canadian Artist Residency At MAWA, Winnipeg, Manitoba—Two deadlines: April 29, 2011 (for residencies in 2011) and October 28, 2011 (for residencies in 2012) MAWA is offering their urban, loft-style apartment to women visual artists for residencies of 2-4 weeks in duration. Applicants can use this space and time for research, reflection, networking and/or production. They will provide free accommodation and a $300 honorarium.

(ALL/ENVIRONMENTAL ARTISTS) Chesapeake Bay residency—Annmarie’s residency program provides a serene place on the Western Shore of the Chesapeake Bay for visual, musical, and literary artists to create works that address ecological issues and/or inspire community involvement. Residencies are meant to focus on merging the arts and the environment and should include the involvement of the local community to some capacity. Spring/Fall Residencies: residents are required to work with field trip groups and/or school outreach programs as scheduled. Summer Residency: summer residents are required to design a public art project that engages the visitors to Annmarie Garden in the art-making process. Summer residents are required to work alongside the public for at least 12 hours/week.

Studio Information—Resident artists have access to studio space within the living quarters (one bedroom), and are also welcome to use other gallery and classroom space as available. Annmarie has a modest ceramics studio with a kiln, slab roller, and potter’s wheels that are also available for use, as well as a painting studio with easels. With numerous indoor and outdoor exhibition and installation options, artists are encouraged think creatively about how and where to display their work. Artists should bring their own equipment. (ARTISTS) AiR Sandnes Residency in Stavanger, Norway—Sandnes City Council and Rogaland County Council, offer a residency to professional artists. The artist can be from abroad, a Norwegian national or a regional artist wanting an alternative project space. The offer consists of a 1-3 months residency in a rent-free studio with accommodation situated in the city of Sandnes in the municipality of Rogaland, close to the city of Stavanger.

The art studio is situated in the same building as several other artist studios at Stasjon K, right next to Kinokino – Centre for Art and Film. Housing is located at the city end of the largest park in Sandnes, Sandvedparken, about a five-minute walk from the city centre and studio space. In addition to a one-person bed the flat has a sofa that can turn into a two-person bed. On those premises we can accommodate for collaborators, a couple, or possibly a family of three.

The organization also provides funding—all artists receive 1,000 Euro per month. There is no specific application form. The application should contain a CV, a brief project proposal, documentation of earlier works and preferably some info about yourself as an artist and your artistic practice. (MEDIA ARTISTS) Finishing Fund Grants—FINISHING FUNDS provides media and new media artists with grants up to $2,500 to help complete diverse and innovative moving-image and sonic art projects. Eligible forms include single or multiple channel film and video, computer based moving-imagery and sound works, installations and performances, interactive works and works for new technologies, DVD, multimedia and the Web. We also support new media and interactive performance. Applicants must be residents of New York State; undergraduate students are not eligible. Announcement is made in early June. (PHOTOGRAPHERS & ARTISTS) OSU Post-MFA Fellowships—The Department of Art at Ohio State University is offering 2 Post-MFA Fellowships in 2011-12. One fellowship will be focused in Photography. Another fellowship is available and open to artists working in all mediums. These fellowships include an $18,000 stipend to support the individual while in residence at OSU. Additional remuneration is possible through adjunct teaching assignments, based on program need. 24-hour access to studio space, opportunities to collaborate with other centers, and borrowing privileges from the campus libraries. (WRITERS) The ArtsEdge Residency Project—now accepting applications for the ARTSEDGE RESIDENCY PROJECT, a joint venture of the Kelly Writers House and Penn’s Facilities and Real Estate Services: http://writing.upenn.edu/wh/involved/awards/artsedge/. DEADLINE: April 29, 2011.

The ARTSEDGE PROJECT offers a one year residency for an emerging writer. The residency includes a subsidized apartment at 40th and Chestnut, (writer pays less than half the rent), studio/writing space in the AIR Space artistic nexus, and close affiliation with Penn’s writing communities.

During the course of the residency, the ArtsEdge writer will be encouraged to develop at least one project at the Writers House. (ALL) Vermont Studio Center—Founded by artists in 1984, the Vermont Studio Center is the largest international artists' and writers' Residency Program in the United States, hosting 50 visual artists and writers each month from across the country and around the world. The Studio Center provides 4-12 week studio residencies on an historic 30-building campus along the Gihon River in Johnson, Vermont, a village in the heart of the northern Green Mountains.

Vermont Studio Center awards a number of fellowships for 8-week residencies to international residents from specific countries through the generous support of the Freeman Foundation, the Shelley and Donald Rubin Foundation and the Robert Sterling Clark Foundation. (PLAYWRIGHTS) The P73 Playwriting Fellowship: provides year-long comprehensive support to one early-career playwright who has received neither wide public recognition nor substantial production opportunities in New York City. Through this program, Page 73 provides artistic and financial resources to one emerging playwright as he or she develops a new play that has not received substantial prior development support. The P73 Playwriting Fellow receives a cash stipend in the amount of $5,000 and development support in the amount of $10,000 – 15,000. The fellow is expected to be present in New York City from time to time to fully engage in the opportunities that the fellowship provides.

(FILMMAKERS) Reach Film Fellowship: Cinereach is currently seeking applicants for its annual Reach Film $5,000 fellowship. Cinereach is a not-for-profit founded by a group of young filmmakers, philanthropists and entrepreneurs to champion artful, vital filmmaking. The prestigious seven-month program supports young filmmakers with grants, resources, and industry mentors who help guide their short films through all stages of production. (PHOTOGRAPHERS) Audience Engagement Grant: The Open Society Institute Documentary Photography Project is offering a grant to support alternative models for presenting and disseminating documentary photography to the public.

The Audience Engagement Grant (formerly the Distribution Grant) supports innovative projects that use existing bodies of work to actively engage audiences on human rights and social justice issues. Projects should include a partnership between individuals and organizations that combines expertise in documentary photography with experience working on the topic or community the project addresses. A third distribution partner, whose expertise is in the dissemination or presentation method, may also be included but is not required. The 2010 program will provide five to eight project grants ranging from $5,000 to $30,000 each.

(PLAYWRIGHTS) The Princess Grace Awards Playwright Fellowship: given annually to a young American playwright, consists of a $7,500 grant and a ten-week residence, including paid travel, at New Dramatists, a playwright service organization, in New York City. The award is based primarily on the artistic quality of a submitted play and the potential of the fellowship to assist in the writer's growth. (WRITERS) The Kerouac Writer-in-Residence Project: The Kerouac Project provides four residencies a year to writers of any stripe or age, living anywhere in the world. Each residency consists of approximately a three month stay in the cottage where Jack Kerouac wrote his novel Dharma Bums. Utilities and a food stipend of $800 are included. All you are required to do is work on your writing project and give a reading in the house at the end of your residency. The Project also offers opportunities to you for readings, leading workshops and interacting with the Central Florida Community in various ways. From time to time during your stay you will be asked to participate when the house is used for events such as readings and workshops for local students or book groups. (DANCERS) Free Rehearsal Space for Chicago Dancers/Choreographers: DanceBridge is an initiative of the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs to support Chicago's professional dance artists and choreographers and is now accepting proposals for its Winter 2010 sessionDanceBridge, an initiative of the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs. Its goal is to foster the creation of new and innovative work by Chicago-based dancemakers/choreographers. (PERFORMING ARTISTS AND WRITERS) Kresge Foundation's Detroit Fellowships: The Kresge Foundation's Kresge Arts in Detroit initiative provides financial support for eighteen Kresge artist fellowships annually. Each fellowship consists of a $25,000 award and customized professional development opportunities for emerging and established metropolitan Detroit artists working in the visual, performing, and literary arts.

Applications are now being accepted for fellowships in the performing and literary arts. Performing Arts includes choreography, music composition (in all genres — classical, country, electronic, folk, hip-hop, jazz, rap, rock, etc.), performance art, spoken word, sound art, and interdisciplinary work within the above disciplines. (NATIVE AMERICAN ARTISTS) Expressive Arts Grants: NMAI's Expressive Arts program awards grants of up to $10,000 to support the creation and presentation of new works through the collaboration of two or more Native artists. Awards will specifically support the creation of new works for public performance that may include, but is not limited to, music, dance, spoken word, electronic media, costume design, mask making, set design, performance art, photography, painting, and other forms of expressive culture. (DANCERS) NEFA Production Grant: The New England Foundation for the Arts invites dance artists and companies to apply for a Production Grant for 2010. NEFA grants are highly competitive and award approximately 20 grants each year. The grants range from $25,000 to $40,000. Production grants will also receive touring support for the season following their works creation. The deadline for the first round for the grant process is March 2, 2010.

It is essential that the project applying for production grants engage audiences, explore collaborations within or across disciplines and involve creative and dynamic partnerships with one or more U.S. presenter partners. The Lange-Taylor Prize is offered to a writer and a photographer in the early stages of a documentary project. By encouraging such collaborative efforts, the Center for Documentary Studies supports the documentary process in which writers and photographers work together to record the human story. Emerging Voices is an intensive eight-month program involving writers in the early stages of their literary careers. American Academy in Rome: The Rome Prize: Each Rome Prize winner is provided with a stipend, meals, a bedroom with private bath, and a study or studio. Those with children under 18 live in partially subsidized apartments nearby. Winners of 6-month and 11-month fellowships receive stipends of $12,500 and $25,000, respectively. Each year, the coveted Rome Prize is awarded to thirty emerging artists and scholars in the early or middle stages of their careers who represent the highest standard of excellence in the arts and humanities. The American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) offers fellowships (up to $23,000) and grants (normally $5,000) to individuals to pursue research or study in one or more Scandinavian country for up to one year. The number of awards varies each year according to total funds available. Over $300,000 is available for the 2010-11 competition. Awards are made in all fields. Applicants must have a well-defined research or study project that makes a stay in Scandinavia essential. Applicants must be United States citizens or permanent residents. Applicants must have completed their undergraduate education by the start of their project in Scandinavia. Team projects are eligible, but each member must apply as an individual, submitting a separate, fully-documented application. Call for Proposals for Fall and Spring Sessions. Application Deadline: May 31, 2009. Watermill is a "laboratory for performance" which supports the development of experimental and cross-disciplinary artistic practices. Watermill invites emerging artists to submit ambitious proposals for the creation of collaborative works which critically investigate, challenge, and extend the existing norms of performance practice. Ateljé Stundars aims at providing foreign, mainly visual artists a studio and a guest apartment for two to six months. In the house is a sauna as well as laundry possibilities, basics for traditional art and pottery, dark room. There is a graphic workshop and in the area is also a printing museum offering possibilities to try some old printing techniques. Ateljé Stundars is equipped with a modern image editing computer. The artist apartment is situated only a few hundred meters away from the studio. The apartment is large and sunny enough for a part of it to also be used as a studio. Ateljé Stundars is situated in Solf, in the municipality of Korsholm - about 15 km south of Vasa in Ostrobothnia. Art Space Portsmouth is located within a converted church building. The ASP International Residency is aimed at emerging fine artists with some experience of professional practice who may have had limited exposure in the UK and whose work is engaged with contemporary debate within the international art world. The residency is non-prescriptive allowing the artist to develop work in response to their environment. Sculpture facilities, computers, facilities for Etching, Drypoint, Block Printing and Screen Printing. The studio is on the 2nd floor of the ASP building. PHOTOGRAPHERS: Light Work Photography Residency
Every year Light work invites between twelve and fifteen artists to come to Syracuse, NY to devote one month to creative projects. Over three hundred artists have participated in the AIR program, many of whom have since achieved international acclaim. The residency includes a $4,000 stipend, a furnished artist apartment, 24-hour access to our state-of-the-art darkroom and digital facilities, and generous staff support. Work by each Artist-in-Residence is published in a special edition of Contact Sheet: The Light Work Annual. Contact Sheet is a beautiful publication that is sent to over four thousand art lovers, museums, galleries, and libraries in over thirty-two countries.
