The Insanity of Iran


Famous & controversial art critic Benjamin Genocchio reports on the Iranian contemporary art scene in a recent article on ArtInfo. He titled his piece "The Insanity of Iran" and this seems an understatement when you read the different stories of artists and gallery owners. He pictures a deeply corrupt society - morally, socially, politically, and economically - where it is difficult, often even dangerous to live and work as an artist. Nevertheless, there is a lot of interesting art happening in Teherans public and private galleries. The image above is from Neda Razavipour's 2009 show called "Self Service" at Azad Art Gallery in Tehran. She invited gallery visitors to mutilate a Persian rug with scissors.
