pop-up nyc

just saw this fab series of pop-up books by daisy lew. each spread is inspired by a particular nyc icon —the big apple, the chrysler building (above), yellow cab or the statue of liberty when viewed from above, while it also represents the cityscape itself from the side view.

showtime: back to nature @ the power plant, toronto

if u, by chance, happen to be in toronto these days, then make sure not to miss this one! “back to nature”, the power plant’s summer group exhibition highlights interspecies encounters & poses questions such as: what happens when humans, animals and the natural world meet?, what forms of communication, miscommunication, intimacy, and exchange ensue? great selection of artists, incl. allora & calzadilla, francis alÿs, cory arcangel, john bock, olaf breuning (pic of his 'mammooth' above & make sure to visit his ab fab website!) or shaun gladwell.

and hey, while heading to the power plant, u might as well stumble upon some pieces from the toronto street advertising takeover!

photography: raven smith

on first glance, we've mistaken this curious figure for a new piece of mark jenkins, but we were wrong. the author is raven smith, a london based artist, who takes pics of himself in absurd positions & situation on urban locations. his performance-based photographs train a sharp eye on themes of identity, vanity, myth making and notions of the ideal. very cool!

street art: marilyn monroe monster brought to u by according2g

geoffrey has only just hit the streets of los angeles & he's already making some great discoveries! thanks for sharing this one brotha! author unknown, but def one of our favs amongst the street marilyns :-).
(correction: this piece is actually located in nyc, not la - apparently smart geoffrey has prepared some posts in advance to ensure continuous daily updates during vacation. respect dude - if only we would be so organized...)

ab fab: artfairist & biennalist

why should artists make art works when they can create stories? looking at art fairs as subject, artfairist & his agents are out there, creating rumors of recession in contemporary art (fiac paris, 2008) or the art market crash (art forum berlin, 2008). artfairist is a close relative of biennalist - an art format commenting on biennials and other cultural managed events directly on location & in real time. sometimes biennalist converge with emergency room artists, providing a burning content that cannot wait (today is today, today before it is too late). biennalist can also activate the penetration format, the critical run format as well as rumeur art format. artfairist & biennalist are brain children of a danish artist thierry geoffroy, aka the colonel. currently, thierry is preparing a very large operation at venice biennale 2011 as well as at some surprise locations. we stay tuned & so should you!!!

showtime: john baldessari @ lacma

until sept 12, u can visit 'pure beauty', retrospective of john baldessari in lacma. the show features more than 150 works spanning the artist's career from 1962 to the present day, including works on canvas, photography, videos and artist's books.
'admission ticket to lacma to see "pure beauty," would be good money spent on entertainment - it's 1000 times better than any movie opening this weekend in america' - alas trina calderon for juxtapoz.

ct scanner à la jeff koons

rxart is a non-profit organization dedicated to placing original fine art in patient, procedure and examination rooms of health care facilities, at no cost to the institution. one of their most ambitious projects till present day is an installation by jeff koons at advocate hope children's hospital in oak lawn, illinois. koons' iconic characters find a permanent home on a ct scanner and surrounding exam room in the hospital's radiology department. the installation—the first of it's kind—aims to soothe and cheer young patients and brighten the potentially frightening testing environment. we say we'd dive into this tunnel anytime!

Once Again, Aliens Have Taken Over My Site!

Dear Friends,

Please excuse the political banner (for a gubernatorial campaign in Vermont) that ADSENSE just put on my side bar without asking! I did not sanction it and have just removed it. Sorry about that. I hate when those things happen!

Cheers,

Mira

New Residencies, Fellowships for Artists, Writers, Musicians and More!

Dear Readers,

I am still crazy busy AND getting married in less than two weeks (!), then I am off on a honeymoon until September 18th. I'll try posting one more time before I leave but if I can't, I'll post as soon as I can when I return! Anyway, below are a few new opportunities coming up. Also, thanks to a Mira's List fan, I just learned that that once the 2011 round of residencies are finished at the Hawthorne Castle Residency in Scotland (see my most recent post), the castle will be shutting down for repairs and the director isn't sure he will re-open the place for residencies. They are currently not accepting anymore applications. Too bad. It looked like a beautiful place.

Well...cheers for now...and if you feel like buying me a pivo (that's beer in Czech) for my honeymoon in Prague, go right ahead! I told all our wedding guests not to buy presents, just to donate to my pivo cause. And they did! We got our plane tickets so we are pretty happy. If there are any ML fans out there in Prague, let me know. Maybe we can stop by your studio or meet for a beer!

Cheers,
Mirabee

(ARTISTS) Homesession Residency in Barcelona, Spain: Homesession residency is a program for emerging visual artists in Barcelona, Spain. Its major singularity lies in the development of the artistic work in the context of a living place. Homesession aims at exploring new creation territories and being an open link toward the international emerging creation.

With the specificity that can give a private living place, the homesession residency investigate the dynamic links between the eye, the work, the environment and the artist. It can lead to an ephemeral work, a disposable intervention, an ordinary situation, a chaotic event, a documentation or an ambitious interface. For more info, go to: homesession.org

from fundsforwriters.com:

(ALL) New Light Residencies:
Visual artists, sculptors, dancers, musicians, poets and writers
have all spent time creating at New Light Guest House. The house, which once was home to local dairy workers, has been restored with modern amenities. There are two bedrooms, one bath, and a comfortable living room, complete with a separate kitchen/dining room. New Light Guest House accepts visitors by the month or week, but is willing to arrange a residency that fits the artist's schedule. This space was conceived for serious artists to find the peace and quiet, and the inspiration, to create great works. It is in this spirit that a fee of $250 per month is suggested, although New Light Studio does not wish for monetary concerns to prevent a visit. Equally negotiable is the fee for shorter residencies. Location
Wisconsin. For more info: http://www.newlightstudios.com/guest_house.php.

hilde kentane @ guillaume daeppen

hilde kentane's new show, "platonic ideals & hot ketchup", is on display @ guillaume daeppen gallery in basel, switzerland. in the past, we blogged her fantastic piggies, now you can enjoy crazy monkeys (one is pictured above), little lost boys & rabbits with artistic aspirations. but beware, although the sculptures may look funny at first glace, the show talks about obsession, fragility, aspiration, absurdity & existential drama...

susy pilgrim waters : artists who blog

Originally from England, artist/illustrator/designer Susy Pilgrim Waters now lives in Boston with her husband, two children, a dog, two cats, and two bunnies. Sounds like a fun and very full house. I hope you enjoy Susy's lovely sense of humor and her beautiful artwork today!
Why did you decide to become an artist and could you imagine doing anything else? If so, what?

I have always drawn since I could hold a pencil…I am what I do! If it was anything else, it might be my dog. She has a good life!!

Do you still believe “do what you love and the money will come“?

Sort of, you have to make compromises and be open to requests.
I do a lot of what I love and quite a lot I don’t!  I have had to be open and listen make odd compromises, maybe 80% so the client has to put their mark on the project…20% I am un-encumbered.

How has blogging and the Internet influenced your work as an artist?

It’s a bit of a wild fire with stops and starts. Being able to google and find my work in magazine pieces has been great! That’s how I got into Crate and Barrel.

Please name 3 of your favorite blogs and tell us why these blogs are special.

Angela Ligouri has an incredible eye; she is so talented and LOVELY.
Julie Baine is so mindful and careful about what she purveys…. I am a huge fan.
I really don’t have time to read many blogs…but I DO look at this one…. It’s my son Jasper'sHe is going into his 2nd year at Pratt, it’s a keyhole to him evolving…BLESS!!!

What is your greatest fear and what do you do to overcome it?

There is a lot to fear, so let it go… You just have to carry on and keep perspective. We are so tiny and so transient…I wish the world contained nicer people! MORE harmonious and KIND.

Who would you like to trade places with for one day? Why?

I’d like to be Louise Bourgeois on the day she built her abstract tall sculptures; I would like to feel what it is like to make them. I am rather partial to trading places with Michele Obama too. She is having an amazing time!

What are your secrets for managing your time wisely?

NO secrets, and I don’t always succeed. Having and MAKING deadlines. Answering emails as soon as possible.

If you could live anywhere in the world – all expenses paid – for one year, where would that be? Why?

YIKES! I have to choose between Barcelona, Copenhagen, or Amsterdam, and possibly somewhere in Estonia? Not forgetting Japan….
Where ever it would be it would be to explore my creative process and grow my tentacles longer and with abundance.

How do you maintain a healthy balance between your professional and private life?

I’m not sure that I do. I work hard and play/party hard. Yoga is essential (I have scoliosis). But I only manage that twice a week!!! We have lots of fab friends and we like to play! We do eat very healthily - our “Englishness” means we may imbibe a bit more frequently than some! (my husband Keith and I are Brits)

What are your top goals that you’d like to accomplish within the next 5 years?

To be able to design more for companies like Crate, but also more edgy stuff…a line of ceramics….
A line of accessories…stay tuned, I am working on some plum personal projects.
Possibly a shoe and bags line.
Making Gracie Finn, which is a stationary line I am launching with my friend Martha Field, super successful.
Hey I will stop there…there is too much to say!

What is your advice for someone who would like to turn his or her creative dreams into reality?

BE realistic, be practical… Work hard, do stuff pro-bono, keep experimenting. Be open. BE flexible in your mind; take on stuff you might not like. It’s a good way to grow…process and keep playing.

Thanks Susy! Your artwork is lovely :)
