Hi everyone,
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but....if anyone is applying for JACOB J. JAVITZ fellowship this year, an astute Mira's List fan just informed me that the program was closed by Congress this year and they don't know when it will reopen again. And for some reason, they are not posting about the closing on their site and apparently will not email you in writing about it. You have to call them to hear about it over the phone. This is unfortunate because this fellowship is a great one for those of you applying for MFA programs in the arts. But things do change year to year so check back on their website next season. In the meantime, you should know about this and maybe call their office to double check about the status of the fellowship or just not waste your time applying for the Sept. 30th deadline this fall.

(ALL) Artist in residence stipends—Kuenstlerdorf Schoeppingen Foundation Fellowships—Kuenstlerdorf Schoeppingen Foundation, Germany Guiding principle of Kuenstlerdorf Schoeppingen Foundation is to support writers, visual artists, artists in the field of new media and and interdisciplinary projects as well as composers by the way of artist in residence stays in the Foundation Kuenstlerdorf Schoeppingen (NRW, Germany) accomodation.
These stays go along with monthly stipends and can last as long as four months in total. The fellows can work highly focused during this period of time in the Foundation Kuenstlerdorf Schoeppingen (NRW, Germany) studios, apartments and flats on their respective art, book or score projects. With in total 14 fellows being on site at the same time and coming from different sectors of work a comprehensive and inspired exchange of ideas takes place. Application for the artist in residence stays is internationally open. There is no limit of age existent.
Grants: Grants for visual arts, new media art, interdisciplinary projects, literature and composition will be awarded each year. Different juries of experts decide on the incoming applications. Deadline for applications is 15th of September of the current year. The monthly stipend amounts to 1025,- Euros. An amount for the operating expenses of the apartments or studios of about 100,- to 200,- Euros has to be payed of this. There is an obligation to spend the artist in residence stay on place.
Facilities:The studios and apartments of the artist village Schöppingen are in two completely renovated farmhouses dating from the early 19th century. A total of eight apartments for authors and new media artists and six studios for visual artists is available. There are a gallery space and a wood/metall workshop available.

MoTA is the first Artist in Residency program in Ljubljana for media, sound or visual artists, who can live and work in the capital of Slovenia for a period of one month. MoTA accepts applications for production residencies for artists interested in transitory art. MoTA offers the opportunity to produce and exhibit art projects which research and experiment with: -transitions in space and time, transitions in legal, moral, ethical, political positions, transitions of digital into analog world.
Artists selected through this open call are offered full production support and a public showing of the work produced according to the nature of the project.During the residency, a public presentation of the artist is required. Each resident artist is also asked to donate an artwork to the MoTA museum collection.

Anderson/Frankel Fellowship for Chicago area/SAIC alumni. One fellowship sponsored by the Marshall Frankel Foundation and Davis Anderson, this award is open to all Chicago-area artists, including faculty and alumni of the Art Institute of Chicago, for one 4-week VSC residency.

(PHOTOGRAPHERS) Howard Fellowship—Stipends of $30,000 will be awarded to support photographers working on projects for the academic year 2011-2012. Howard Fellowships are intended primarily to provide artists and scholars with time to complete their work. They are not intended for publication subsidies, for equipment purchase, for preparation of exhibits, or to support institutional programs. (ARTISTS & WRITERS) Sustainable Arts Foundation 2011 Awards— In recognition of the challenges of leading a creative life while raising children, the Sustainable Arts Foundation provides financial support to writers and artists with families. They offer a number of $6,000 awards in both the Spring and in Winter. The applicant must have at least one child under the age of 18. They welcome applications from anywhere, but give some preference to residents of the San Francisco Bay area. In addition, they award a number of Promise Awards of smaller dollar figures to applicants whose work may not qualify for the main awards, but demonstrates both skill and potential. As with most grants, your portfolio aids the judges to rank you. They are also interested in hearing about your plans and how this award might assist you in attaining your goals. One award winner and up to two finalists are selected by a jury composed of Magnum photographers. Deadline: 30 April, 2011! (WOMEN ARTISTS) New Canadian Artist Residency At MAWA, Winnipeg, Manitoba—Two deadlines: April 29, 2011 (for residencies in 2011) and October 28, 2011 (for residencies in 2012) MAWA is offering their urban, loft-style apartment to women visual artists for residencies of 2-4 weeks in duration. Applicants can use this space and time for research, reflection, networking and/or production. They will provide free accommodation and a $300 honorarium.

Spring/Fall Residencies: residents are required to work with field trip groups and/or school outreach programs as scheduled. The organization also provides funding—all artists receive 1,000 Euro per month. There is no specific application form. The application should contain a CV, a brief project proposal, documentation of earlier works and preferably some info about yourself as an artist and your artistic practice. (ARTISTS & PERFORMERS) Looking for Artists/Performers to live and work in Central America—Immediate Opportunity to Use Your Talents for Social Change: ArtCorps seeks performing or visual artist to work with our newest partner organization, CARE, in Honduras in 2011. ArtCorps is a unique opportunity for artists to receive training in Art for Social Action, gain valuable experience in sustainable development and contribute to grassroots change in Central America.

(ALL) Bogliasco Fellowships—Fellowships at the Bogliasco Study Center in Luguria, Italy are awarded, without regard to nationality, to qualified persons doing advanced creative work or scholarly research in the following disciplines: archaeology, architecture, classics, dance, film or video, history, landscape architecture, literature, music, philosophy, theatre, visual arts in the arts.
Applicants for Fellowships are expected to demonstrate significant achievement in their disciplines, commensurate with their age and experience. In addition, they must submit descriptions of the projects that they intend to pursue in Bogliasco. An approved project is presumed to lead to the completion of an artistic, literary, or scholarly work, followed by publication, performance, exhibition, or other public presentation.
Approximately 50 Bogliasco Fellowships are awarded each year. They are scheduled during the two semesters of the traditional academic year. Fellowships usually have a duration of one month (30-31 days). In some circumstances, half-semester residencies (47 days) may be awarded with special approval of the Bogliasco Foundation Board of Trustees. April 15th is next deadline. (ARTISTS) Emergency Assistance Program—The Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation: The Emergency Assistance Program provides interim financial assistance to qualified artists whose needs are the result of an unforeseen, catastrophic incident, and who lack the resources to meet that situation. Each grant is given as one-time assistance for a specific emergency, examples of which are fire, flood, or emergency medical need. The program does not consider requests for dental work, chronic situations, capital improvements, or projects of any kind; nor can it consider situations resulting from general indebtedness or lack of employment. The maximum amount of this grant is $10,000; an award of $4,000 is typical. To be eligible, an artist must be able to demonstrate a minimum involvement of ten years in a mature phase of his or her work. (ALL & SCHOLARS) New England Regional Fellowship Consortium Grant: Massachusetts Historical Society: The New England Regional Fellowship Consortium, a collaboration of 18 major cultural agencies, will offer at least 11 awards in 2011–2012. As this project should include enrollment in a recognized French art school or music conservatory, it is strongly suggested that the candidate establish a significant contact with a teacher or institution prior to arriving in France and to show evidence of this contact in his/her application dossier. (ARTISTS) Emergency Assistance Program—The Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation: The Emergency Assistance Program provides interim financial assistance to qualified artists whose needs are the result of an unforeseen, catastrophic incident, and who lack the resources to meet that situation. Each grant is given as one-time assistance for a specific emergency, examples of which are fire, flood, or emergency medical need. The program does not consider requests for dental work, chronic situations, capital improvements, or projects of any kind; nor can it consider situations resulting from general indebtedness or lack of employment. The maximum amount of this grant is $10,000; an award of $4,000 is typical. To be eligible, an artist must be able to demonstrate a minimum involvement of ten years in a mature phase of his or her work. New Residencies, Fellowships for Artists, Writers, Musicians and More!
Dear Readers,
I am still crazy busy AND getting married in less than two weeks (!), then I am off on a honeymoon until September 18th. I'll try posting one more time before I leave but if I can't, I'll post as soon as I can when I return! Anyway, below are a few new opportunities coming up. Also, thanks to a Mira's List fan, I just learned that that once the 2011 round of residencies are finished at the Hawthorne Castle Residency in Scotland (see my most recent post), the castle will be shutting down for repairs and the director isn't sure he will re-open the place for residencies. They are currently not accepting anymore applications. Too bad. It looked like a beautiful place.
Well...cheers for now...and if you feel like buying me a pivo (that's beer in Czech) for my honeymoon in Prague, go right ahead! I told all our wedding guests not to buy presents, just to donate to my pivo cause. And they did! We got our plane tickets so we are pretty happy. If there are any ML fans out there in Prague, let me know. Maybe we can stop by your studio or meet for a beer!

(ALL) Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts Residencies: The Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts in Nebraska City, NE offers 2- to 8-week residencies year-round for writers, visual artists, and music composers. Housing, studio space, $100/week stipend are provided. Visual artists work in one of three studios, two of which are approximately 425 square feet and one that is 258 square feet.
Approximately 50 residencies are awarded per year. have all spent time creating at New Light Guest House. The house, which once was home to local dairy workers, has been restored with modern amenities. There are two bedrooms, one bath, and a comfortable living room, complete with a separate kitchen/dining room. New Light Guest House accepts visitors by the month or week, but is willing to arrange a residency that fits the artist's schedule. This space was conceived for serious artists to find the peace and quiet, and the inspiration, to create great works. It is in this spirit that a fee of $250 per month is suggested, although New Light Studio does not wish for monetary concerns to prevent a visit.
