(POETS) Martin Dibner Fellowships—Fellowships of up to $1,000 each are given in alternating years to emerging Maine-based poets and fiction writers to attend writing workshops or complete writing projects. (ALL) The Wellcome Trust Arts Awards—The Wellcome Trust is inviting organizations and individuals to apply for funding through its Arts Awards. The Arts Awards support projects that engage the public with biomedical science through the arts including dance, drama, performance arts, visual arts, music, film, craft, photography, creative writing or digital media. Applications are invited for projects up to £30,000.

The aim of the awards is to support arts projects that reach new audiences which may not traditionally be interested in science and provide new ways of thinking about the social, cultural and ethical issues around contemporary science. (WRITERS) Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission, United States/Japan Creative Artists Residency—Up to five five-month residencies, each of which includes a monthly stipend of 600,000 yen (approximately $7,100) for living expenses, housing, and professional support, are awarded annually to published U.S. poets, fiction writers, and creative nonfiction writers to live in Japan and pursue creative projects. The residencies are sponsored by the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission in conjunction with the National Endowment for the Arts. The residencies also each include a travel grant of up to $6,000. (ALL) Byrdcliffe Art Colony Residencies—The Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild offers month long Artist in Residence (AIR) opportunities for visual artists, composers, playwrights/screenwriters, and writers of fiction, nonfiction and poetry. Longer residencies are available for ceramic artists. The AIR sessions generally occur during the months of June, July, August, and September. Our goal is to provide solitude in a community and uninterrupted time in which to concentrate on creative work alongside fellow artists. (ARTISTS/CURATORS/SCHOLARS) Paths Crossing Production Residencies—Helsinki International Artist Programme (HIAP) / Baltic Art Center / Fabrikken for Kunst og Design / Nordisk / Kunstnarsenter Dalsåsen / Temple Bar Gallery & Studios: You are eligible to apply if you live and are professionally based in Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Montenegro, Serbia, Slovenia, Estonia, Croatia, Latvia, Lithuania, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Poland, Romania or Slovakia.

In partnership with four North European artist-in-residence centres, HIAP is pleased to announce an open call for applications to visual artists and art professionals under the age of 40 from new and applicant EU Member States. Visual artists and art professionals are invited to apply for research and production residencies hosted by the organizers within the framework of the Paths Crossing project. This residency and cooperation project is co-funded by the European Union's Culture Programme for 2010–2012.

The five participating artist-in-residency centres are together able to offer fifteen individual production and research residencies, each from one to six months in duration. Artists, curators, critics and researchers based in Europe (see countries above) are all eligible to apply.

The selected applicant will receive:
• a travel grant
• a subsistence grant to cover living expenses
• a production grant
• free accommodation and studio space for the duration of the residency

• support in establishing contacts with local artists and organisations

New Residencies & Grants and a My Words Project Update

Hey everyone, thanks so much for all your letters of support and all your donations to the My Words Are My Shelter project. It apparently struck a deep chord in many people and the response has been amazing. The update is this: In the very first day, I got $507! That is enough to send a box of journals, pens and pencils to every single woman at my mom’s shelter. I haven’t even checked my P.O. box for checks yet and today, some other donations came in. What I decided to do with the extra money, is to use the money for a ticket to go to Cleveland to the shelter (no need for housing as I have friends there) and do a poetry workshop with the women there this coming February. Any left-over money from this My Words project after that will be donated to the shelter in either check form or in the form of more journals or books (they really need books too!). So that’s the update. I’ll run this project until December 20th for now. I think that it will become an on-going project for the future and I hope that it inspires other such actions across the globe. Actually, it already has---I have heard from several people around the world who said they were going to do the same thing. Very cool! And all because of YOU!

(MN or NY ARTISTS) The 2011 Jerome Foundation Travel and Study Grant Program—will award grants to emerging creative artists (composers, sound artists, playwrights, creators of performance art and experimental theater, and visual artists). Minnesota-based executive and program administrators working for nonprofit organizations in music, theater, and visual arts are also eligible to apply. The deadline for applications in Music, Theater, and Visual Arts is February 28, 2011.

The Travel and Study Grant Program places emphasis on individual exploration and growth. The program supports such activities as research leading to the creation of new work, the development of collaborations, participation in specific training programs, time for reflection and individualized study, investigating artistic work outside of Minnesota or New York City, and dialogue on aesthetic issues.

(MUSICIANS & COMPOSERS) Music Omni Residency: Each August, approximately a dozen musicians--composers and performers from around the globe--gather for two and a half weeks to share in a unique collaborative music making residency program. Music Omi encourages its residents to participate as members of an international musical community; sharing ideas, performing each others works and writing music for one another while exploring their own musical vision. Music Omi invites applicants from all musical disciplines who wish to broaden their artistic horizons and engage actively with a diversity of other musicians.

Unlike most artists residency programs, where artists come to work in isolation, Music Omi actively encourages the exchange of ideas and the sharing of cultures through active collaboration. A singular feature of the Music Omi experience is the presentation of two public concerts at the conclusion of the program (one on the Art Omi campus itself near the conclusion of the residency, and the other at a New York City venue the day following the conclusion of the residency).

Applicants may be primarily composers, improvisers or performers, but have some proficiency in each of these areas. Music Omi welcomes academically trained musicians, musicians "of the street," players of traditional instruments, concert instruments, vocalists, and sound artists of all kinds. "Pop," "jazz," "classical," "folk," "experimental," and other such labels have no bearing on the selection process, only musical excellence and a wish to collaborate. It is recommended that applicants come not with specific projects in mind, but rather with a willingness to share their skills and sensibilities, and an openness to working together with others on jointly conceived musical projects.

All awarded fellows commit to remaining for the entire residency and to participating in the concluding concerts. Everyone accepted to Music Omi receives full room and board during his or her stay (note that Art Omi is unable to provide travel funds).

(SCULPTORS) Funded Residencies—SculptureSpace, Utica, New York: Twenty artists are selected every year. Each receives a $2000 stipend toward residency expenses. The selection is made by the Sculpture Space Review Committee and a rotating guest panelist. Artists are notified in March of the panel’s decision. The HUB-BUB Artists-in-Residence Program in Spartanburg, South Carolina is an opportunity for three visual artists and one creative writer between the ages of 20 and 35 to focus on their art-making/writing while helping with our organization’s mission to build community through dynamic art and ideas. Each resident is provided their own large studio apartment along with a semi-monthly stipend ($600/month total). Studio apartments are located above HUB-BUB’s Showroom Gallery. In exchange, residents spend up to 20 hours a week working for HUB-BUB or The Hub City Writers Project and getting involved in community based art projects. (ARTISTS) Emergency Assistance Program—The Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation: The Emergency Assistance Program provides interim financial assistance to qualified artists whose needs are the result of an unforeseen, catastrophic incident, and who lack the resources to meet that situation. Each grant is given as one-time assistance for a specific emergency, examples of which are fire, flood, or emergency medical need. The program does not consider requests for dental work, chronic situations, capital improvements, or projects of any kind; nor can it consider situations resulting from general indebtedness or lack of employment. The maximum amount of this grant is $10,000; an award of $4,000 is typical. To be eligible, an artist must be able to demonstrate a minimum involvement of ten years in a mature phase of his or her work. (ART HISTORIANS & SCHOLARS) Hamad bin Khalifa Travel Fellowships—Virginia Commonwealth University: The Hamad bin Khalifa Travel Fellowships are awarded to up to 20 individuals who wish to attend the 4th biennial Hamad bin Khalifa Symposium on Islamic Art, "God is Beautiful; He Loves Beauty: The Object in Islamic Art and Culture," October 29-31, 2011 at the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar. Fellowships cover the cost of roundtrip travel to Doha, lodging and meals during the symposium, and special events and excursions. The fellowships are intended to enable junior and senior scholars at all levels to attend the symposium; preference will be given to applicants from diverse backgrounds with long-standing research interests in Islamic art and architecture. (MUSICIANS & ARTISTS) The Harriet Hale Woolley Scholarship for study in Paris: The Harriet Hale Woolley Scholarship is a private grant awarded annually to up to four graduate and post-graduate American students in the visual fine arts (painting, graphic design, print-making, sculpture, photography) and music (composition, instrumental or vocal performance). The scholarship is not intended for research in art history, or musicology, nor for dance or theatre.
Successful candidates propose a unique and detailed project related to their study which requires a one-year residency in Paris. As this project should include enrollment in a recognized French art school or music conservatory, it is strongly suggested that the candidate establish a significant contact with a teacher or institution prior to arriving in France and to show evidence of this contact in his/her application dossier. (ALL) Le Ville Matte Residency Program in Sardinia, Italy: International call for the residency program in Cagliari, Sardenia, Italy. The program for visual artists will take place in Sardinia from 14 April to 15 May 2010 in Villasor, a town a few kilometers from Cagliari. This initiative is part of LE VILLE MATTE – artist residencies, a wider project promoted by the Province of Cagliari, through the Cultural Policy Office, with the purpose of offering artistic study and research residencies in Sardinia, stimulating new productions in the field of music, writing and visual arts. The call is open to artists from all over the world, with no age limit (but the applicants must be over eighteen). Deadline for visual artists: February 28th, 2010!

Participation in the residency program is free, and includes the following services: a studio with internet connection; open space area for group activity; town library and multimedia library for documentation; production expenses managed by the visiting professor on the basis of each artist's requirements. (ARTISTS) Joan Mitchell Foundation Residency Fellowship Awards: VSC is pleased to announce that they received funding for ten new Joan Mitchell Foundation Fellowship awards for visual artists based on quality of work and demonstrated financial need.

The Vermont Studio Center is an international residency program open to all artists and writers. Year-round, VSC hosts 50 artists and writers per month, each of whom receives an individual studio, private room, and all meals. Residencies last from 2-12 weeks and provide uninterrupted time to work, a community of creative peers, and a beautiful village setting in northern Vermont. In addition, VSC's program includes a roster of Visiting Artists and Writers (2 painters, 2 sculptors and 2 writers per month) who offer slide talks/readings and individual studio visits/conferences. (ARTISTS) Abbey Painting Awards: The Abbey Scholarship and Abbey Fellowships offer all-expenses-paid, residencies at the British School in Rome in superb modern studios, with a stipend of up to £500 a month for the Scholar and £700 for Fellows. The nine-month Abbey Scholarship is usually given to an emergent painter, while the three-month Abbey Fellowships are awarded to mid-career painters. Abbey Awards are open to people of UK and US nationality, and to citizens of other countries provided that they have lived in the UK or the US for at least five years. (ALL) The Arctic Circle Program Residency: The Arctic Circle program seeks applications from international contemporary artists of all disciplines, architects, scientists and educators alike. Program Outline: The Arctic Circle is a series of artist and scientist-led expeditions to remote and fascinating destinations aboard a specially outfitted scientific-research sailing vessel. Their expeditions are followed by an international exhibit schedule. Participants travel on an ice-class, traditionally rigged sailing vessel into the High Arctic during October. (PRINTMAKERS) Chhaap Printmaking Residency in India: Chhaap's Baroda printmaking workshop was set up in 1999 by three artists to do their own work and also to create printmaking facilities available to others. Chhaap also offers a short-term Artist-in-Residence program between September to March for one week to one month. Artists can stay in a studio which has two etching presses, a hotplate and aquatint box. There is also a guest room with attached bathroom and kitchen. Chhaap accepts applications all year round. (ALL) Residency at I-Park, Connecticut: Residencies will be offered to national and international visual (including digital) artists, music composers, environmental artists, landscape and garden designers, creative writers and architects. Work samples are evaluated through a competitive, juried process. There is a $25 application fee. I-Park is introducing a modest food program for 2010 where most, though not all, of the food will be provided. The facility is otherwise offered at no cost to accepted artists. Elsewhere is set within a three-story former thrift store, boarding house, and warehouse containing one woman's enormous 58-year collection of American surplus, thrift, and antiques. Elsewhere residencies invites experimental creators to join their collaborating community in utilizing this immense collection of objects. Artists live and work within interactive installations that provide evolving frameworks for investigating collaborations, community structures, and creative processes. Neilsen Foundation Residency Fellowships: The Vermont Studio Center is offering fellowships for artists and writers who live with Spinal Cord Injury (SCI), Spinal Cord Disease (SCD) or who use a wheelchair and/or have a spinal cord injury. Deadline is February 15, 2010. The Vermont Studio Center has been dedicated to supporting a multidisciplinary community of contemporary painters, printmakers, sculptors and writers for 25 years; and offers more than 50 mid-career and emerging artists and writers per month distraction-free working time and space and the inspiration of distinguished mentors. (WRITERS) University of Arizona Poetry Center Residency: Each summer, the University of Arizona Poetry Center in Tucson offers a month-long residency, including a stipend of $500, to a poet, fiction writer, or creative nonfiction writer who has published no more than one full-length book. ARTISTS RESIDENCIES IN ITALY & FRANCE, TRAVEL GRANTS AND MORE!

Just so you know, I'll be gone from around the 10th to the 18th so no posts during that time. For now, I'd like to tell you about some upcoming deadlines for grants and residencies. The first is a relatively new one, which opened in the south of Italy in 2008. Unfortunately, there aren't any stipends available yet, but they are working on that with various foundations. The cost to stay there isn't bad though and I recommend checking it out. I used to live in Italy years ago and this is one of the most beautiful places on earth. (ALL) RESIDENCY IN SOUTHERN ITALY: Applications are now open for summer residencies at Palazzo Rinaldi, a historical property dating back to 1822 located in the charming hilltop village of Noepoli, in the Pollino National Park (south of Italy). The Palazzo provides artists of all disciplines with a unique and inspiring retreat away from the stresses and distractions of urban living. (COMPOSERS & SOUND ARTISTS) VAN LIER FELLOWSHIP: The purpose of this fellowship is to provide financial support for young composers in the early stages of their careers, working in any style of music or sound art. The fellowship is open to African-American and Latino composers 32 years of age or younger. The applicant must be a full-time resident of New York City (any borough) and show financial need. The applicant must not be enrolled in a degree-granting program at the time of application (i.e., no students).

The one-year fellowship award is $8,500. Funds can be used for any purpose, including the creation of new work, the purchasing of music/tech equipment, travel, or research and development. An additional $1,500 will be allotted to each fellow to design and execute an educational outreach program to benefit students and/or youth groups. This educational proposal is not part of the original application; those who win a fellowship will design the proposal after the award is conferred. (ALL) CAMARGO FOUNDATION RESIDENCY IN FRANCE: The Camargo Foundation, located in Cassis, France, is an interdisciplinary center for scholars and artists of all disciplines pursuing creative projects. The Foundation provides furnished apartments, a reference library, a music/conference room, artist studio with darkroom, composer's studio, and a studio for either artist or composer. Residencies are one semester long. The Camargo Fellowship is a residential grant (they used to give money as well, although I think they only offer housing and studio space now, plus a $1500 stipend.) Deadline is January 12, 2010.

(ALL) ARTSLINK TRAVEL GRANTS: CEC ArtsLink is dedicated to creating cultural exchanges between artists of all disciplines in the United States and artists in Central and Eastern Europe, Russia, Central Asia and the Caucasus. Several kinds of opportunities are available from CEC, for both artists and arts managers in the U.S. and the countries listed above. The following announcement is for U.S. artists but please check the website for grants and residencies for non-US citizens.

ArtsLink Projects provides support to US artists, curators, presenters and arts organizations undertaking projects in Central Europe, Russia, Central Asia and the Caucasus. Applicants must be working with an artist or organization in that region and projects should be designed to benefit participants and audiences in both the US and the host country.

Maximum award this year will be $10,000. ArtsLink has a cycle of alternate year deadlines according to discipline. In 2010, applications will be accepted from individual artists, curators and non-profit arts organizations working in dance, music, literature and theater. In 2011, applications will be accepted from individual artists, presenters and non-profit arts organizations working in visual and media arts. (ARTISTS) Artist-in-Residence Program at SF Recycling & Disposal, Inc.: The goal of the Artist In Residence Program at SF Recycling & Disposal, Inc. is to use art to inspire people to recycle more and conserve natural resources. The company provides selected local artists with the opportunity to create art using materials they gather from San Francisco's refuse. This includes 24-hour access to a well-equipped studio, a monthly stipend, and an exhibit at the end of their residency, but artists seem most excited about having 24-hour access to the materials.
