Mirabee is Back! Fellowships, Grants and Residencies for All!

Mirabee is finally back online! Let's rock it....here are a few things that have been festering in my pile of announcements....Happy Summer Solstice y'all!

(BOOK ARTISTS) The National Museum of Women in the Arts is accepting proposals for annual Artist Book Grant, 2012The Library Fellows Program was established in 1989 to encourage and support the creation of artists’ books and to benefit the Library and Research Center. Although collaborative works are allowed and even encouraged, the artist who is responsible for the overall creation, design and realization of the book must be a woman.

The Fellows’ contributions are used to produce an artist’s book in a limited edition of 125 copies. As a benefit of membership, each Fellow receives a copy of the book. The artists keep 25 copies as a form of remuneration for their creative efforts. The remaining copies are sold and the money generated from the sale benefits the Library and Research Center. Deadline is June 30th!

(SCHOLARS & STUDENTS) The American Institute of Indian Studies welcomes applications for fellowships to conduct research in India. Fellowships are available to scholars holding the Ph.D. degree as well as graduate students who are working towards the Ph.D. degree. Short-term and long-term fellowships are available. (WRITERS & ARTISTS) National Park Service - Denali, Alaska—Artist-in-Residence ProgramThe Artist-in-Residence program at Denali National Park began in 2002, and offers professional artists the opportunity to pursue their work amidst the natural splendors of Denali Park.

Denali National Park and Preserve Seeking Artists-in-Residence for 2012.
Denali National Park and Preserve is seeking applications from visual artists and writers for the 2012 Artist-in-Residence Program. This will be the first season with an open call to writers to submit for a residency. The program is in its eleventh year at Denali, and many of the works created by artists-in-residence from previous years are on display in the Denali Visitor Center and the Eielson Visitor Center.

A link to the online application and more information about the program is available at http://www.nps.gov/dena/historyculture/arts-program.htm. Applications for the 2012 season must be submitted by September 30, 2011. Notification letters will be sent out by December 15, 2011.

Selected artists reside in the historic East Fork cabin, located 43 miles into the park, for a ten-day period between June and mid-September. In return for their residency, each artist donates a piece of artwork or written piece that was inspired by their time in the park, to the park’s collection. Artists also offer a public presentation for visitors at the end of their residency.

(ARTISTS, STUDENTS & ART HISTORIANS) The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is currently offering grants for the visual arts and art history. The deadline for applications is Thursday, November 10, 2011.

Award amounts and categories: $8,000 Professional artists, $6,000 Graduate students (including art history students)$4,000 Undergraduate students (including college-bound high school seniors)

Professional artists must be current, legal residents of Virginia and must not be enrolled in a degree-seeking program at the time of the application deadline or the grant period of August 2012-May 2013. Undergraduate students in the visual arts must be current, legal residents of Virginia who will be enrolled full-time in a degree program at an accredited college, university, or school of the arts for the grant period of August 2012-May 2013. Graduate students in the visual arts and art history must be current, legal residents of Virginia who will be enrolled full-time in a degree program at an accredited college, university, or school of the arts for the grant period of August 2012-May 2013.

(ALL) The Zion National Park Artist in Residence program offers professional artists the opportunity to live and work in the majestic desert environment of southern Utah for a period of four weeks. Artist will also receive a $300 stipend to assist with travel and supply expenses. This call for artists applies to three sessions: October 17-November 13, 2011, February 6-March 4, 2012, or April 2-April 29, 2012, or October 15-November 11, 2012.

The works completed under this program will contribute to the public understanding and appreciation of Zion National Park and should reflect the National Park Service’s mission to the preservation and protection of the park’s cultural and natural resources.

During the Residency period the artist will be expected to present two public programs, tailored to an individual’s medium, interest, and experience. One will take place at Zion Nation Park and the other at Southern Utah University as part of the Art Insights program. See the application materials for more information.

At the conclusion of the Residency, participating artists will donate an original piece from their Residency in Zion National Park to be placed in the Park’s permanent collection.

(ARTISTS) Call For Proposals: Artist Multiples, Limited Editions

Who we are:
The Present Group is a triannual art subscription service. Every year TPG subscribers receive three limited edition works from three different contemporary artists. Each work is accompanied by information to help them gain insight into the piece, its creator, and recurring themes in the contemporary art world.
What we are looking for:
Projects that result in a limited edition, an artist multiple, or either a part of or a document of a larger work. Our current edition numbers are under 100. We do not accept proposals for reproductions of paintings. Work must be reproducible in intent. The project will be made exclusively through The Present Group. We understand that similar themes and images may be used throughout your other work, however you agree not to create the exact project in the same form again.
Appreciation for Selected Artists:
* $500 honorarium + production costs
* 4 of the produced work for your own collection or to sell on your own.
* All the contextual information we create for your piece, including artist info, critiques, and video will remain free on-line as long as TPG exists

(ARTISTS) The British School at Rome: Artists Residencies & Fellowships: Applications are invited for a number of residencies in the visual arts. They offer an en-suite studio and bedroom, meals taken together in a communal dining room, 24-hour access to a historic library collection, a research grant, and at least one group show; they are tenable for three, nine or twelve months.

(ALL) The Wellcome Trust Arts AwardsThe Wellcome Trust is inviting organizations and individuals to apply for funding through its Arts Awards. The Arts Awards support projects that engage the public with biomedical science through the arts including dance, drama, performance arts, visual arts, music, film, craft, photography, creative writing or digital media. Applications are invited for projects up to £30,000.

The aim of the awards is to support arts projects that reach new audiences which may not traditionally be interested in science and provide new ways of thinking about the social, cultural and ethical issues around contemporary science. (WRITERS) Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission, United States/Japan Creative Artists ResidencyUp to five five-month residencies, each of which includes a monthly stipend of 600,000 yen (approximately $7,100) for living expenses, housing, and professional support, are awarded annually to published U.S. poets, fiction writers, and creative nonfiction writers to live in Japan and pursue creative projects. The residencies are sponsored by the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission in conjunction with the National Endowment for the Arts. The residencies also each include a travel grant of up to $6,000. (ALL) Byrdcliffe Art Colony ResidenciesThe Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild offers month long Artist in Residence (AIR) opportunities for visual artists, composers, playwrights/screenwriters, and writers of fiction, nonfiction and poetry. Longer residencies are available for ceramic artists. The AIR sessions generally occur during the months of June, July, August, and September. Our goal is to provide solitude in a community and uninterrupted time in which to concentrate on creative work alongside fellow artists. Opened in 1903, the Byrdcliffe Art Colony was placed on the National Register of Historic Sites in 1979 for its architectural and historical significance. BIG Fellowships & Grants for Writers: Summer Deadlines

Well, I recently got back from NYC after meeting with my editors, the book designer, and a million other great people at Free Press, the imprint of Simon & Schuster that is publishing my book, The Memory Palace. I am in the last leg of the production of this literary creature—I have to finish all the art and do several thousand more little things before it's actually sent off to be printed. I know I told you guys that I would do some posting on the book process, from start to finish, and I will, but it has become clear to me that I will be pretty crazy-busy until about mid-September. But if I can do anything on the subject before then, I will. In the meantime, I will just do my best to keep up with some deadlines. (WRITERS) The Astrea Foundation Lesbian Writer's Fund: Two $10,000 grants to emerging lesbian poets and fiction writers. Two $1,500 grants are also given to finalists in each category. (POETS) Frost Place Resident Poet Award: A prize of $1,000 and a six to eight week residency at Robert Frost's former home in Franconia, New Hampshire, is given each year to a poet, who has published at least one poetry collection. (WRITERS) Fil Prize in Romance Languages: A prize of $150,000 is given annually to honor a poet, fiction writer, or creative nonfiction writer who writes in Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan, Italian, French, Galician, or Roumanian. The prize is awarded by a consortium of Mexican governmental agencies, universities and banks. Individuals may not apply but cultural or educational institutions, associations or other cultural groups may nominate a candidate. Submit the writer's CV and a letter of support by June 15th. (WRITERS & SCHOLARS) The Howard Foundation Fellowships: The Howard Foundation awards a limited number of fellowships each year for independent projects in selected fields. The Foundation targets its support specifically to early mid-career individuals, those who have achieved recognition for at least one major project. Approximately ten fellowships will be awarded in April 2011 for 2011-2012 in the fields of Creative nonfiction, literary translation (into English), Film Studies, and Literary Studies.

Stipends of $25,000 will be awarded to support individuals working on specific writing projects for the academic year 2011-2012. Howard Fellowships may not be used to prepare exhibits or to support institutional programs. There are no residency requirements for individuals who receive awards. The deadline for submission of applications is November 1, 2010. Fellowship recipients will be announced in April 2011. (WOMEN WRITERS) Money for Women/Barbara Deming Memorial Fund:
Individual artist grants for women, $500 to $1,500 each are given twice yearly to feminist writers. Women poets and creative nonfiction writers who are US and Canadian citizens can apply. (NONFICTION WRITERS) Richard J. Margolis Award: A stipend of $5,000 and a month-long residency at the Blue Mountain Center, an artists colony in Blue Mountain Lake, NY, is given annually to a nonfiction writer (including creative nonfiction but unfortunately, not memoir). Fellowship and Grant Deadlines for Artists, Writers & Graduating Seniors

(ARTISTS) The Lillian Orlowsky and William Freed Foundation Grant: The Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM) is proud to announce The Lillian Orlowsky and William Freed Foundation Grant, a new source of funding for mature American painters. This marks the first year that these grants are made available to the public.

Grants will be offered to American painters aged 45 or older who demonstrate financial need. The primary emphasis is to promote public awareness and a commitment to American art, as well as encouraging interest in artists who lack adequate recognition. Grants will range from $5,000 to $10,000. Applications are available online at www.paam.org or by calling 508.487.1750. Completed applications must be postmarked by August 16, 2010.

(ALL) The Bush Foundation Fellowships: The Bush Artist Program creates opportunities for artists who live in Minnesota and North and South Dakota to advance their work, stimulate dialogue and contribute to deeper community engagement by providing them financial and professional development support. Applicants must be from Minnesota, North Dakota
or South Dakota, and U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Each year, up to 15 artists receive unrestricted grants of $48,000. In addition, fellows receive up to $2,000 to plan and implement an individual communications strategy. (GRADUATING STUDENTS) Thomas J. Watson Foundation Fellowship Program: The Thomas J. Watson Fellowship Program is designed to give exceptional graduates from fifty participating colleges the freedom to engage in a year of independent study and travel abroad. The fellowship provides a grant of $25,000 to each recipient; fellows whose spouse or dependent child(ren) will accompany them may be eligible for a grant of $35,000.

The Program supplies, in addition to the stipend, an amount equal to twelve months' payment of outstanding federally guaranteed student loans (based on 120 months of repayment), to ease the financial burden of fellows during their fellowship year, and to provide encouragement for students to apply for fellowships. Graduating seniors at participating institutions are eligible for nomination by their institution. (WRITERS or SCHOLARS) The Princeton University Hodder Fellowships: Two fellowships, $62,000 each, are given annually to writers and/or scholars with "much more than ordinary intellectual and literary gifts," for the pursuit of independent work in the humanities. The selected fellows are usually from outside academia, and in the early stages of their careers. Fellows spend an academic year in residence at Princeton. Ph.D. candidates are not eligible. (ALL) John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowships: are given annually to advanced professionals with a significant record of publication for research in any field of knowledge or creative work in any of the arts. Candidates should already have demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship or exceptional creative ability in the arts. The awards are given for a minimum of six months and a maximum of one year. The average fellowship grant is approximately $43,200. (ARTISTS) Eben Demarest Trust: The Eben Demarest Fund makes one annual grant (never given for scholarship aid) of approximately $15,000 to a mature artist or archaeologist who wishes to concentrate for a time on a chosen field without having to depend entirely on the sale of work or outside employment. The beneficiary is chosen by the Eben Demarest Council. Unsolicited applications from individuals will not be accepted, but applications from organizations or institutions for unusually gifted people will be considered. (WRITERS) The Bard Fiction Prize: annually recognizes a promising young fiction writer under the age of 39; it consists of a monetary award and appointment as writer-in-residence at Bard College for one semester. The recipient gives at least one public lecture and meets informally with students.

To apply, candidates should write a cover letter explaining the project they plan to work on while at Bard and submit a C.V., along with three copies of the published book they feel best represents their work.
