(ARTISTS) The British School at Rome: Artists Residencies & Fellowships: Applications are invited for a number of residencies in the visual arts. They offer an en-suite studio and bedroom, meals taken together in a communal dining room, 24-hour access to a historic library collection, a research grant, and at least one group show; they are tenable for three, nine or twelve months.

The awards available for 2011–12 include: Abbey Scholarship and Fellowships; Australia Council Residencies; the Derek Hill Foundation Scholarship; and the Sainsbury Scholarship in Painting and Sculpture. (POETS) Martin Dibner Fellowships—Fellowships of up to $1,000 each are given in alternating years to emerging Maine-based poets and fiction writers to attend writing workshops or complete writing projects. For this year’s fellowships, poets may submit a writing sample of five to seven pages and a resumé by January 15, 2011. There is no entry fee. (ALL) The Wellcome Trust Arts Awards—The Wellcome Trust is inviting organizations and individuals to apply for funding through its Arts Awards. The Arts Awards support projects that engage the public with biomedical science through the arts including dance, drama, performance arts, visual arts, music, film, craft, photography, creative writing or digital media. Applications are invited for projects up to £30,000.

The aim of the awards is to support arts projects that reach new audiences which may not traditionally be interested in science and provide new ways of thinking about the social, cultural and ethical issues around contemporary science. The scheme is open to a wide range of people including, artists, scientists, curators, filmmakers, writers, producers, arts workers and education officers. Deadline: 28 January, 2011. (ARTISTS) Visual Arts Residencies—One-month residencies for visual artists are being offered in America's oldest working art colony on Rocky Neck in Gloucester, Ma. Included is a waterfront studio/ gallery/ living space, and access to a rich, cultural community.

(WRITERS) Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission, United States/Japan Creative Artists Residency—Up to five five-month residencies, each of which includes a monthly stipend of 600,000 yen (approximately $7,100) for living expenses, housing, and professional support, are awarded annually to published U.S. poets, fiction writers, and creative nonfiction writers to live in Japan and pursue creative projects. The residencies are sponsored by the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission in conjunction with the National Endowment for the Arts. The residencies also each include a travel grant of up to $6,000. Submit 10 pages of poetry or up to 15 pages of a long poem or work of prose, two letters of recommendation, a resumé, and proof of publication by February 1. There is no entry fee. Wong Fellowship: A one-year fellowship at the University of East Anglia, including a £26,000 (approximately $41,300) stipend, is given annually to a fiction writer for a work that “deals seriously with some aspect of life in the Far East.” Submit up to 2,500 words of fiction with a £10 (approximately $16) entry fee by January 17. (WRITERS) Stadler Center for Poetry/Philip Roth Residency—A four-month residency, including a $4,000 stipend, at the Stadler Center for Poetry at Bucknell University is given annually to a poet, a fiction writer, or a creative nonfiction writer. The 2011 Philip Roth Residence is open to U.S. fiction writers and creative nonfiction writers who are over the age of 21 and not enrolled in a college or university. (ALL) Byrdcliffe Art Colony Residencies—The Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild offers month long Artist in Residence (AIR) opportunities for visual artists, composers, playwrights/screenwriters, and writers of fiction, nonfiction and poetry. Longer residencies are available for ceramic artists. The AIR sessions generally occur during the months of June, July, August, and September. Our goal is to provide solitude in a community and uninterrupted time in which to concentrate on creative work alongside fellow artists. Opened in 1903, the Byrdcliffe Art Colony was placed on the National Register of Historic Sites in 1979 for its architectural and historical significance. It is located in the Catskill Mountains, 1.5 miles from the center of Woodstock, New York. MORE UPDATES AND INFO

Well, the final word on the Robert MacNamara residency in Maine is that they are temporarily suspending it for this coming year. Too bad. One thing I've noticed since the crash is that one month I might get an announcement sent to me from a foundation or I might see an announcement for something on a site and then, not long after that, the foundation runs out of funding. Therefore, during this period of financial uncertainty, please double check all websites before you send out any applications.

A couple other little items: when you want to leave a comment after a posting, just click on the place that says 'comments' at the end of the posts for that time and follow the directions. I hide my comments, only because sometimes there are a lot of them and I just don't want to take up so much space. If you are having any trouble leaving comments, it might mean that you have to update your browser, so please try that before you write me an email, okay? Thanks! (ARTISTS) La Macina di San Cresci Residency in Tuscany

La Macina di San Cresci Residency, Greve in Chianti, between Florence and Siena. When: October 1, 2009 – March 31, 2010. Deadline: until filled. La Macina di San Cresci offers ten partial funding in grant based on a combination of merit and need. This assistance reduces Residency fees and may cover up to half the full cost of a minimum three-week residency. This grant assistance is available from October 1, 2009 to March 31 , 2010 residencies. Applications for these awards are accepted any time. (ARTISTS) Oregon College of Art and Craft Artist-in-Residence Program

The OCAC residency program in Portland, Oregon provides artists with time to think, and to immerse themselves in the making. Whether an emerging or a nationally known artist; residents have the freedom to explore, experiment, interact and create. The OCAC offers two kinds of residencies, a Junior residency and a Senior residency. Artists can apply anytime. The Junior Residency provides recent MFA graduates with sixteen weeks of focused work time during the fall or spring semester. Applications are accepted from artists working in a specified craft medium. During the semester, residents take advantage of the vibrant college community, interacting with students, faculty and staff. The Senior Residency is a six-week long program in the summer. This residency offers mid-career artists a break from their scheduled lives to focus on their work. Applicants working in any of the College’s craft media may apply. Residencies are open to only US artists. All residents are provided with nearby housing, a stipend, and materials and travel reimbursement. Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Amherst, VA. Average stay is four weeks. Residents receive housing, all meals, and studios. (ARTISTS) Roswell Artist-in-Residency Program

Roswell Artist-in-Residency Program in Roswell, New Mexico, U. S. A. Well known by artists as the "Gift of Time", the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program was established in 1967 to provide gifted studio based visual artists with the unique opportunity to concentrate on their work in a supportive, collegial environment for a whole year. This "gift of time" allows artists to work without distraction in an effort to break new ground and focus on individual goals. In-residence grants are offered to artists involved in painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, photography, installation and other fine art media. Grants are not made in the disciplines of performance art or production crafts.

Residencies are for one year. Artists are housed in a complex of six houses and 10 studios located on forty acres of land. Each artist is provided with a house that can amply accommodate either a single person or a family. Rent, utilities (except telephone), repairs and maintenance costs are borne by the Program. ***While the visa process for non-US residents participating in their program has improved somewhat, they are still limited in their ability to assist with the long term visa issues that may arise for foreign participating artists.
