NEW GRANT FOR WRITERS WITH CHILDREN, RESIDENCIES IN HUNGARY & ITALY, AND MORE!

Greetings everyone...Lately I've been getting quite a lot of requests from individuals from places as far away as India and Iran, asking if I know of any scholarship money for art and writing students to attend graduate school in the U.S. Unfortunately, this is an area I know little about but if I find something, I will certainly post it. In the meantime, thanks to a lovely and helpful Mira's List fan from Iran, here is a site she stumbled on for those of you looking for funding to attend overseas universities for both undergrad and grad school: http://scholarship-positions.com/ (Thanks Saeide!). Below are some up-coming deadlines. And just so you know, mid to late April is a big deadline for many artist residencies, so if you are thinking of applying for one for this summer or fall, check out my sidebar for links to residency databases. Also, if you have had any success funding a past residency, please visit this post and share your ideas. Thanks!

(ALL) Residencies for Scholars and Creative ArtistsThe Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Center: Residencies allow for disciplined work uninterrupted by the usual professional and personal demands. Residency participants include scholars, scientists, artists, journalists, writers, non-governmental organization practitioners and policymakers from around the world. Collegial interaction with the other residents is an integral dimension of the Bellagio experience. Meals and informal presentations of residents’ work afford an opportunity for dynamic discussion and engagement with each other. During special dinners, residents may be able to interact with participants in international conferences hosted in various buildings on the Center’s property. The Center also offers collaborative residencies for two to four persons working on the same project. Creative artists in all fields and scholars in all disciplines from any country are welcome to apply. A residency is typically four weeks in length. The deadline for the current competition is May 7, 2010 for residencies between March 1, 2011 to July 31, 2011. For more information visit http://www.rockefellerfoundation.org/bellagio-center.

OPEN FORUM ON HOW TO FUND YOUR ARTIST RESIDENCY

Greetings all. Today I thought it would be a good thing to see if any of you had come up with some creative ideas about funding residencies, both in your own country and abroad. My most frequently asked question is: Are there any grants out there to help pay for travel and expenses, etc. once I get accepted to an artist residency? I've addressed this a little in these two posts: http://miraslist.blogspot.com/search/label/FAQs%3A%20RESIDENCIES but I am always looking for new ideas. I'd like to open this up for discussion to all of you. If any of you have come up with great solutions to help fund your residency (money for travel, expenses, and keeping up with household bills while you are gone), please write in the comment section below so others can benefit from your past experience. Thanks!

Cheers,
Mirabee

CALLING WOMEN BOOK ARTISTS, COMPOSERS, EMERGING ARTISTS, INDIGENOUS MUSICIANS AND MORE!

For your weekend reading pleasure....(thanks to Artist Trust for a couple of these)

(ARTISTS) Franklin Furnace Grants: Each year Franklin Furnace awards grants to emerging artists, allowing them to produce major works in New York. Grants may range between $2,000 and $10,000 depending upon funding received by Franklin Furnace. Artists from all areas of the world are encouraged to apply; however, funded projects must be presented in New York. Full-time students are ineligible. Complete application information is available at http://www.franklinfurnace.org/ Deadline: April, 4, 2010.

(COMPOSERS/PERFORMERS/SOUND ARTISTS) Common Ground Grants: The Common Ground program is inclusive, and therefore encourages Indigenous composers, performers, and sound artists working in diverse genres/mediums to apply. Artists are encouraged to take risks in their creative endeavors. Common Ground is designed to fill the gap in funding for artists who are particularly interested in creating work without the burden of artistic compromise. Common Ground aims to give timely aid to those indigenous musicians who are strongly dedicated to their art, who show artistic merit, and who propose an excellent project.

Common Ground is open to Indigenous makers of new music; composers, performers, sound artists, and songwriters. Complete grant guidelines and application information is available at http://www.fnci.org/. Deadline: April, 1, 2010.

(COMPOSERS/MUSICIANS/ENSEMBLES) CMA Classical Commission Program: Chamber Music America, the national service organization for the chamber music profession, is accepting applications for its Classical Commissioning Program from CMA member ensembles and presenters for commissions of new chamber works. The program provides support to U.S.-based classical/contemporary ensembles, presenters, and festivals that commission American composers to create new chamber works. Applicants must be organization-level members of CMA.

CMA defines chamber music as music for small ensembles (two to ten musicians) whose members perform one to a part, generally without a conductor. Compositions may represent a diverse musical spectrum including contemporary art music, world music, and works that include electronics. New works created through this program must be performed a minimum of three times in the United States. The program provides funding for the composer's fee (awards of $5,000 to $20,000 each), the ensemble's rehearsal honorarium ($1,000 per ensemble musician), and copying costs (awards of up to $1,000 each). For more information and guidelines, please go to: http://www.chamber-music.org/. Deadline: April, 9, 2010.

(WOMEN BOOK ARTISTS) The National Museum of Women in the Arts Library Fellows Program: The objective of the Library Fellows program is to encourage and promote the creation of artists’s books and to support NMWA’s Library and Research Center and book art programs. The Library Fellows program provides up to $12,000 annually for the production of an artist book in an edition of 125. An additional $1,000 is provided for the artist to create 500 copies of a promotional brochure for the book, as well as $1,000 for the artist to travel to the Library Fellows’ annual meeting to present her book upon completion.

The artist who is responsible for the overall creation, design and realization of the book must be a woman. Technical assistance in developing the book edition by both women and men is acceptable. Collaborative projects between two or more artists are allowed. Only new books will be considered. Previously published books or books that are versions of books previously published or planned for publication will not be considered. Complete proposal guidelines are available at http://www.nmwa.org/library/program.asp Deadline: June, 30, 2010.

jill bliss : artists who blog

Jill's blog: blog.jillbliss.com
Jill's website: www.jillbliss.com
Jill's shop: shop.jillbliss.com

Why did you decide to start a blog?

I used to keep in touch with my customers by doing frequent in-person sales events, but had to take a break from those these past 2 years while I dealt with some health problems. The blog is a great way to let people know what I’m up to and thinking about since I don’t see them so often any more. Now my back and shoulders have healed and I’m getting back into doing in-person sales events again!

How did you come up with the name of your blog?

Ha ha! My blog doesn’t have a name, poor thing. At the bottom of the page it says „Jill Bliss is proudly powered by WordPress “ which cracks me up every time I see it!

How has blogging affected your work as an artist?

It functions as a reminder for me – if I can’t remember exactly when I did a certain project, I can check my blog. I hear it’s also a great portfolio for potential clients. I do post each and every project I work on!

What are your favorite artist/designer blogs?

I like to keep up with my friends’ blogs to see what they’re doing. Apart from that, I like to check these blogs when I have spare time:

you thought we wouldn't notice - see who’s ripping off who.
this artist's life - whitney smith - great reminder of the artist life.
my love for you is like a stampede of horses - awesome art.
share some candy - awesome art and design.

Do you have any advice for artists/designers who are starting a blog?

Before you start, think about how much of your private life you feel comfortable revealing. I talked to several other friends who have blogs and asked for advice before I started.

What has been the most positive and inspirational aspect of having a blog for you?

I love it when people comment! Especially when they’re positive comments!

What do you find the most difficult/most rewarding part of having a creative profession?

Being in charge of my own schedule and finances is both a blessing and a curse.

Other than your blog, what has been the most effective way for you to promote your art/design?

Etsy, word of mouth, doing sales events and talking with my customers directly as much as possible! I get as much out of these interactions as they do – I learn so much about how they use the things I make and what they wish I'd make.

How do you maintain a healthy work/life balance?

That’s always a work-in-progress. Two years ago I moved to portland oregon from the bay area, where I was born. That has helped a lot – I no longer have to work 80 hours a week just to barely cover my monthly expenses. I also got a dog six years ago, and she’s great at reminding me to go outside several times a day, and eat at least two meals a day on a regular schedule!

What would you like to accomplish in 2010?

In 2009 my artwork progressed to a new level in the series you see at the beginning of the post: anima. I also began teaching formally and informally. My goal for 2010 is to continue to progress and refine my artwork, my teaching skills, and the rest of my life. It will be an amazing year!

Thanks Jill! I love the peaceful, detailed quality of your artwork, and your studio looks awesome!

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to let you know that in the middle of the night, my private email address (not my Mira's List email address) was hijacked by some hacker and over a thousand people got sent some stupid email about me trying to sell them electronic products. Please do not open the link if you are in touch with me via my private address. My yahoo email address (mbartok@yahoo.com) wasn't hacked and is fine. My private address should be fine now too as I changed my password. Sorry about the inconvenience. I don't know why people do that. It's so mean!

TIPS ON FUNDING ARTIST RESIDENCIES

Good morning. I just found this on the Transartist site and thought it might be useful for those of you applying to residencies overseas and far from home. Please check out their site sometime to learn about residencies and other opportunities around the world. Also, they have a message board for people looking for studio space or studio exhanges, etc.

From Transartists.org:

Of course a residency costs money. Some residency programs cover all costs, some residency programs don't cover any costs at all. In general, residential art centers will partly cover the costs, which always makes it necessary to find additional funding. Be sure about the budget before you go!

You got a grant of the residential art center?

Congratulations! But you have to check the following:

  • Do you get to keep the grant yourself or does the residency itself use it to pay for rent and facilities?
  • If you get the money yourself, are you free to use it for your own purposes or do you have to pay with it for the rent or for use of facilities?
  • How much is it? Can you pay the whole residency with the money?
  • Get a written agreement, stating how much you receive, when and how.
  • How much money do you still have to pay yourself?

You need additional funding?

You're selected, but the money offered or the facilities offered for free are not enough to cover the whole budget. Check out the following:

  • Don't agree to come over without being sure you can cover the whole budget.
  • Ask the residential art center for invitation letters or letters of support for applying for additional funding.
  • Ask the residential art center for information about their local funding possibilities.
  • Applying for additional funding takes time, always ask the residential art center if you can come over later when you need more time to arrange the budget.

You need to cover all costs yourself, even accommodation costs and costs of living?

Be sure about the motivation of the residential art center. Is it really a guest center 'for art's sake'?

  • Many guest studios just don't have the money to pay for your residency. But they do have a lot to offer 'in natura'. Just check out if the relation between what they offer and what you have to pay, is fair.
  • If a residential art center is operating on a purely commercial basis, it doesn't have to be a 'bad' center. It can be a quality center for art's sake. Just be sure about it!
  • Do you need to pay in advance, during or after your residency?
To read more about this subject and find a residency that might be good for you, go to:
http://www.transartists.org/articles/funding_check.147.html
