(POETS) Martin Dibner Fellowships—Fellowships of up to $1,000 each are given in alternating years to emerging Maine-based poets and fiction writers to attend writing workshops or complete writing projects. (ALL) The Wellcome Trust Arts Awards—The Wellcome Trust is inviting organizations and individuals to apply for funding through its Arts Awards. The Arts Awards support projects that engage the public with biomedical science through the arts including dance, drama, performance arts, visual arts, music, film, craft, photography, creative writing or digital media. Applications are invited for projects up to £30,000.

The aim of the awards is to support arts projects that reach new audiences which may not traditionally be interested in science and provide new ways of thinking about the social, cultural and ethical issues around contemporary science. (WRITERS) Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission, United States/Japan Creative Artists Residency—Up to five five-month residencies, each of which includes a monthly stipend of 600,000 yen (approximately $7,100) for living expenses, housing, and professional support, are awarded annually to published U.S. poets, fiction writers, and creative nonfiction writers to live in Japan and pursue creative projects. The residencies are sponsored by the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission in conjunction with the National Endowment for the Arts. The residencies also each include a travel grant of up to $6,000. (ALL) Byrdcliffe Art Colony Residencies—The Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild offers month long Artist in Residence (AIR) opportunities for visual artists, composers, playwrights/screenwriters, and writers of fiction, nonfiction and poetry. Longer residencies are available for ceramic artists. The AIR sessions generally occur during the months of June, July, August, and September. Our goal is to provide solitude in a community and uninterrupted time in which to concentrate on creative work alongside fellow artists. (ARTISTS) SOHO2O Gallery Chelsea / Artists Residency Program: SOHO2O Gallery Chelsea is a non-profit artist run gallery that has been promoting the work of women artists since 1973 through gallery exhibitions and public programming. As part of our continued commitment to the arts we are introducing a 3 month studio residency program for visual artists.

What the residency offers:

• 4 three-month studio residencies available. Jan-March / April – June / July – Sept/ Oct – Dec. 2011
• The studio is located within SOHO20 Gallery. It is a private studio space that measures 26x9 feet. The studio offers 13 foot ceilings and over 40 feet of workable wall space.
• Access to the studios 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. *Occasionally artist will need to coordinate use with scheduled gallery events.
• Opportunities to present works to curators, critics, arts professionals, and the general public.
• Artists are encouraged to present finished work to the public near the end of the residency with a gallery-sponsored reception.
• Application is open to both men and women artists.

Note that the studio residency at 547 W. 27th Street is for work use only. There is absolutely no living space allowed.

Eligibility
All applicants must be residents of the United States or have a valid visa not expiring before the end of the program, 18 years or older, may not be enrolled in any degree seeking program and must be able to demonstrate need for a studio. (PRINTMAKERS) A Call for Entry—Wheat Farm Press Print Exchange 1:1: Wheat Farm Press is establishing a quarterly print exchange, and juried publication of prints. The goal of this exchange is to promote the development of the finest artistic ideas and talents in contemporary printmaking. They are looking for artists at any stage in their artistic lives to dedicate time to the development of an edition of eleven prints. They are looking for people who are passionately dedicated to printmaking, who don’t have access to a press, who have regular access, who print by hand, those who collage, make precise editions, make variable editions, those who can afford the time to work on prints every day, and those who sneak in time whenever possible to develop imagery.

For the creation of an edition of eleven prints you will receive ten unique prints in return from artists all over the world. (ALL) The Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts: offers up to fifty juried residencies per year to working artists from across the country and around the world. Residencies are awarded to visual artists, writers, composers, interdisciplinary artists, and arts or arts education scholars. Residencies are available for two-, four-, six-, or eight-weeks stays. (WRITERS & ARTISTS) Chicago Winter Art Residency: Writers and artists of all disciplines are welcome to participate this winter in six day residencies in the accessible and vibrant Wicker Park neighborhood of Chicago. (ARTISTS) Flux Factory Residencies in NYC: Flux Factory is an artist-run not-for-profit organization that provides residencies and work spaces for 14 artists. They organize ambitious group exhibitions in their gallery, while doing projects as a collective in other institutions in the US and abroad.

Their building includes a gallery, a co-working office, a screen printing lab, and a wood shop. It also has a shared kitchen, library, and lots of great people. Residents benefit from an engaged and creative community, studio visits, monthly art salons, and exposure to a large community of creative collaborators who both maintain personal practices and also develop projects together. All residents have a voice in planning programming and sustaining the organization as a whole. Residency periods are 3 / 6 / 9 / 12 months, and each artist must find their own funding for their residency, though Flux Factory can certainly help with this process. Research Fellowships are intended for artists, scholars and curators, working on historic and contemporary sculpture using the Institute's library, archive of sculptors' papers and the collection of Leeds Art Gallery. Up to 4 fellows will be given the opportunity to spend a month in Leeds to develop their own research. For sound recording, development of multichannel sound works,

(LATINO ARTISTS) The National Association of Latino Arts and Culture Fund for the Arts: The NALAC Fund for the Arts awards a small number of fellowships ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 to support artists whose work demonstrates excellence and the potential for
impacting the Latino arts field. Examples of acceptable expenses for NFA fellowships include but are not limited to: costs for the creation or completion of new work, travel, study, professional development, living expenses, equipment, hiring of assistants, costs for documentation, production expenses and maintenance. Projects must begin after January 1, 2011 and must end by December 31, 2011. Deadline September 24, 2010.

(ALL) American Academy in Berlin—Berlin Prize Fellowship: Residential fellowships offer a stipend ranging from $3,500 to $5,000 per month, round-trip airfare, housing at the Academy, and partial board to emerging as well as established scholars, writers, and professionals who wish to engage in independent study in Berlin for an academic semester or in rare cases for an entire academic year. In the case of the Bosch Fellowship in Public Policy, shorter stays of six to eight weeks may be arranged. Fellows are expected to be in residence at the Academy during the entire term of the award. An award of $5,000 is given to each winner and a community service project at the Bronx Writers' Center is required. All eligible applicants must submit four copies of a representative body of work of no more than ten pages of poetry or twenty pages of fiction. (WRITERS) The Fielding Programme Residency: The Fielding Programme is a unique residency opportunity for writers with a project in hand. It offers one-to-one support for your novel, poetry or play in the spectacular setting of Cove Park, Scotland's international artist residency centre. $40,000 Prize for Creativity, UK Writers Grants and More!!

Hi Everyone,

Thanks so much to all of you who sent me those sweet little get-well notes! That was very kind of you. I'm still a bit under the weather but I wanted to pass along a couple opportunities for you to think about. I also wanted to say something about grant rejections and why, even if you get rejected, good things sometimes occur.

Recently I was notified that while I was in the last batch of writers considered for a large fellowship, I did not make the final cut. Okay, well, try again next time. I wasn't upset at all, just slightly disappointed. But then I got a lovely email from one of the judges who said that after the judging process, he asked if they would reveal the name of the person who wrote the piece I submitted. Long story short: he's not only an author who I've always wanted to read and whose last book I had literally just ordered but he also happens to review books for several major magazines and newspapers and he is interested in reviewing mine when it comes out. A similar thing happened a few years ago with another large fellowship. I didn't get it but one of the judges also tracked me down afterward and said she was an editor for a literary journal and would I be interested in submitting a piece. So you see, gentle readers, sometimes even rejections can turn into something quite positive. The point is that you are putting yourself out there and getting others who are movers and shakers in your genre to see your work. This is a good thing.

Okay, on to a couple other things. Here is a very unusual large grant that is based not on a specific discipline but rather on an artist's creative process. It's called the Thatcher Hoffman Smith Prize and it is offered every two years from the University of Oklahoma's College of Arts and Sciences. The award is also called the Creativity in Motion Prize. The award is for $40,000 and is not for a completed project but, as I said, how amazing the artist's creative process is. The deadline is August 31st. If they are doing things the way they have in the past, it means a letter of intent and then if they like your idea, they ask you to apply. (WRITERS) The Author's Foundation Grants: The Foundation provides grants to writers to assist them while writing books. There are two rounds of grants each year, awarded in the summer and in the winter. The next closing date for applications is 30th September 2010. To apply the author must meet one of the following conditions:

1. The author has been commissioned by a commercial British publisher to write a full-length work of fiction, poetry or non-fiction and needs funding (in addition to the publisher's advance) for important research, travel, or other more general expenditure.

2. The author is without a contractual commitment by a publisher but has had at least one book published commercially by a British publisher, and there is a strong likelihood that their next book will be published in Britain.

There are lots of residency deadlines coming up and many, many grant applications due in September. If you are thinking about applying for a major fellowship or grant in September, or a residency for that matter, now is the time to start that process and to get the word out to those people who will write recommendation letters for you.

As part of their continued commitment to the arts they are introducing a five month studio residency program for visual artists.

The studio space is located at 547 West 27th Street, in the heart of the Chelsea art community of New York City. (WRITERS) The Madeleine P. Plonsker Emerging Writer's Residency Prize: Each spring, Lake Forest College, in conjunction with the &NOW Festival, sponsors emerging writers under forty years old--with no major book publication--to spend two months in residence at their campus in Chicago's northern suburbs on the shore of Lake Michigan. There are no formal teaching duties attached to the residency. Time is to be spent completing a manuscript, participating in the annual Lake Forest Literary Festival, and offering a series of public presentations. The completed manuscript will be published (upon approval) by &NOW Books imprint, with distribution by Northwestern University Press. The stipend is $10,000, with a housing suite and campus meals provided by the college. Deadline April 1, 2010.

***By the way, I know this area (Lake Forest) —rather posh but very beautiful. The lake is very close as is Ragdale Foundation, a great artist colony. And the place is not that far from Chicago.
