Money for Photographers and Emerging Writers

Okay, I've been storing a few things up. I have a lot up my sleeve...more to come soon but for now, these two are for you photographers and emerging writers out there:

(PHOTOGRAPHERS) The W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography is presented annually to a photographer whose past work and proposed project, as judged by a panel of experts, follows the tradition of W. Eugene Smith’s concerned photography and dedicated compassion exhibited during his 45-year career as a photographic essayist.

The W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund independently administers the grant program that provides photographers with the financial freedom to carry out or complete major photographic essays. For 2011, the amount of the grant will be $30,000. An additional $5,000 in fellowship money will be dispersed, at the discretion of the jury, to one or more finalists deemed worthy of special recognition. Awards will be presented in a ceremony held in New York City in early October. DEADLINE MAY 31st!

(WRITERS) The Elizabeth George Foundation makes artistic grants to unpublished fiction writers, to poets, to emerging playwrights and to organizations benefiting disadvantaged youth. These grants cover expenses in a number of areas.

We offer financial support to unpublished and emerging writers for a period not to exceed a year; we offer scholarships for students to attend accredited MFA programs in creative writing; we support writing research; we offer funding to allow unpublished and emerging writers to attend writers’ retreats and conferences. The Foundation also makes grants to organizations offering services to disadvantaged youth in the areas of health, education, and creative writing. While the Foundation makes grants to support emerging playwrights, the Foundation does not make grants to theatrical groups seeking support for a production.

To be considered for a grant, applicants must send a package of materials to the Foundation by July 1. It must contain the following:

- A letter that fully describes the project the applicant wishes to be funded
- A recent CV that also includes the names, titles, addresses and phone numbers of at least five professional references
- A complete first chapter of the applicant’s book or a completed short story OR a selection of the applicant’s poetry or published chapbook OR a one-act play the applicant has written
- $25 application fee

For ten years the Juniper Literary Festival has celebrated some of the nation’s most exciting authors, books, and publishers. The 2011 Juniper Literary Festival: New Writers/New Writing will introduce audiences to vital contemporary writing and explore issues essential to the future of American literature. A unique national event, the festival will celebrate and contribute to the literary richness of the Pioneer Valley. The festival will offer readings by a dozen acclaimed authors who have recently published their first or second books, including Timothy Donnelly, Michelle Hoover, Travis Nichols, and Kiki Petrosino. There will also be roundtable discussions, a press fair featuring dozens of the nation’s most exciting literary magazines and presses, and a keynote panel with the Poetry Society of America’s Alice Quinn and the National Book Foundation’s Harold Augenbraum.

Artist Fellowships & Residencies in Hungary, Maryland, Italy and Beyond!

Greetings, oh neglected ones!
Yes, I’ve been running around different towns reading from my book, The Memory Palace, and also doing a lot of radio shows. Therefore, I have neglected thee. I thought I better post something soon or you might forget I exist. But before I tell you about some great new opportunities—for all you local peeps, I want you to know that I’ll be reading at the Pelham Library, 2 South Valley Road in Pelham, MA THIS Thursday, March 17th at 7 pm. This is probably my last local reading until the fall, except for reading in Boston in early April, just so you know. And for those of you living in the Chicago area, please come to my one and only Chicago reading on Thursday, March 24th at the Book Cellar at 4736 North Lincoln Ave at 7 pm. It would really be great to see some Mira’s List fans there!
Okay, on to more important things:

(ALL) The Platte Cove Artist-in-Residence programoffers one-week residencies each summer in the Catskill Mountains open to all creative types "who have an affinity for the natural world." Artists live and work in the Platte Clove cabin on 208 acres of wilderness. The cabin has electricity, wood stove, telephone, but no running water. Residents must provide their own linens and food. $30 application fee, no fees charged or stipend offered for the residency. (PRINTMAKERS) A Call for EntryWheat Farm Press Print Exchange 1:2: Wheat Farm Press has established a quarterly print exchange, and curated publication of prints. The goal of this exchange is to promote the development of the finest artistic ideas and talents in contemporary printmaking. By participating in the Wheat Farm Press Print Exchange 1:2, you have the opportunity to present your fellow printmakers with your best possible artistic efforts, and in return receive ten prints that are indicative of a fellow printmaker’s dedication, care, thought process, and skill. We are looking for artists at any stage in their artistic lives to dedicate time to the development of an edition of eleven prints. We are looking for people who are passionately dedicated to printmaking, who don’t have access to a press, who have regular access, who print by hand, those who collage, make precise editions, make variable editions, those who can afford the time to work on prints every day, and those who sneak in time whenever possible to develop imagery. (PRINTMAKERS) The Venice Printmaking Studio—is currently accepting applicants for Summer 2011. We encourage the exploration of traditional as well as experimental printmaking practices and ideas.

Located on the glass-blowing island of Murano, the Venice Printmaking Studio is tucked away from the more trafficked areas of the city and offers a 2000 sq. ft. workspace overlooking the lagoon. Summer 2011 is an ideal time to visit Venice as it coincides with the 54th Biennale di Venezia.

(ALL) International Artists in Residencies, Budapest 2011The Hungarian Multicultural Center, Inc.® (HMC), 501(c)(3), Dallas, TX/Budapest, Hungary based non-profit organization. The HMC dedicated to inspiring, connecting, exhibiting, and promoting artists. The HMC invites interested visual artists, writers, performers to submit application for its residency program in Budapest, Hungary. The residencies offer participants to interact with other artists representing a variety of cultures and backgrounds. Accepted applicants are expected to speak and understand English. (WRITERS) The Writer’s Center, Emerging Writer Fellowships—Fellowships are given biannually to poets, fiction writers, and creative nonfiction writers to give readings at the Writer’s Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Fellows within a 250-mile radius of the center will receive a $250 honorarium, and all others will receive $500. Poets with up to three books and prose writers with up to two books published are eligible. For fellowships in fall 2011, submit up to 10 pages of poetry or 16 pages of prose, a curriculum vitae, and a letter of interest by April 15. There is no entry fee. New Residencies & Grants and a My Words Project Update

Hey everyone, thanks so much for all your letters of support and all your donations to the My Words Are My Shelter project. It apparently struck a deep chord in many people and the response has been amazing. The update is this: In the very first day, I got $507! That is enough to send a box of journals, pens and pencils to every single woman at my mom’s shelter. I haven’t even checked my P.O. box for checks yet and today, some other donations came in. What I decided to do with the extra money, is to use the money for a ticket to go to Cleveland to the shelter (no need for housing as I have friends there) and do a poetry workshop with the women there this coming February. Any left-over money from this My Words project after that will be donated to the shelter in either check form or in the form of more journals or books (they really need books too!). So that’s the update. I’ll run this project until December 20th for now. I think that it will become an on-going project for the future and I hope that it inspires other such actions across the globe. Actually, it already has---I have heard from several people around the world who said they were going to do the same thing. Very cool! And all because of YOU!

The Creative Work Fund Grants of $10,000-$40,000 for projects by San Francisco Bay Area artists and organizations. Provincetown ResidenciesThe Provincetown Community Compact is accepting applications for residencies in two dune shacks in the Cape Cod National Seashore (Provincetown, MA USA). These primitive dwellings in a magnificent setting provide one to three week stays, one with a $500 fellowship for a visual artist, and two funded writers' weeks. (MN or NY ARTISTS) The 2011 Jerome Foundation Travel and Study Grant Program—will award grants to emerging creative artists (composers, sound artists, playwrights, creators of performance art and experimental theater, and visual artists). Minnesota-based executive and program administrators working for nonprofit organizations in music, theater, and visual arts are also eligible to apply. The deadline for applications in Music, Theater, and Visual Arts is February 28, 2011.

The Travel and Study Grant Program places emphasis on individual exploration and growth. The program supports such activities as research leading to the creation of new work, the development of collaborations, participation in specific training programs, time for reflection and individualized study, investigating artistic work outside of Minnesota or New York City, and dialogue on aesthetic issues.

(MUSICIANS & COMPOSERS) Music Omni Residency: Each August, approximately a dozen musicians--composers and performers from around the globe--gather for two and a half weeks to share in a unique collaborative music making residency program. Music Omi encourages its residents to participate as members of an international musical community; sharing ideas, performing each others works and writing music for one another while exploring their own musical vision. Music Omi invites applicants from all musical disciplines who wish to broaden their artistic horizons and engage actively with a diversity of other musicians.

Unlike most artists residency programs, where artists come to work in isolation, Music Omi actively encourages the exchange of ideas and the sharing of cultures through active collaboration. A singular feature of the Music Omi experience is the presentation of two public concerts at the conclusion of the program (one on the Art Omi campus itself near the conclusion of the residency, and the other at a New York City venue the day following the conclusion of the residency).

Applicants may be primarily composers, improvisers or performers, but have some proficiency in each of these areas. Music Omi welcomes academically trained musicians, musicians "of the street," players of traditional instruments, concert instruments, vocalists, and sound artists of all kinds. "Pop," "jazz," "classical," "folk," "experimental," and other such labels have no bearing on the selection process, only musical excellence and a wish to collaborate. It is recommended that applicants come not with specific projects in mind, but rather with a willingness to share their skills and sensibilities, and an openness to working together with others on jointly conceived musical projects.

All awarded fellows commit to remaining for the entire residency and to participating in the concluding concerts. Everyone accepted to Music Omi receives full room and board during his or her stay (note that Art Omi is unable to provide travel funds).

New Residencies, Fellowships for Artists, Writers, Musicians and More!

Dear Readers,

I am still crazy busy AND getting married in less than two weeks (!), then I am off on a honeymoon until September 18th. I'll try posting one more time before I leave but if I can't, I'll post as soon as I can when I return! Anyway, below are a few new opportunities coming up. Also, thanks to a Mira's List fan, I just learned that that once the 2011 round of residencies are finished at the Hawthorne Castle Residency in Scotland (see my most recent post), the castle will be shutting down for repairs and the director isn't sure he will re-open the place for residencies. They are currently not accepting anymore applications. Too bad. It looked like a beautiful place.

Well...cheers for now...and if you feel like buying me a pivo (that's beer in Czech) for my honeymoon in Prague, go right ahead! I told all our wedding guests not to buy presents, just to donate to my pivo cause. And they did! We got our plane tickets so we are pretty happy. If there are any ML fans out there in Prague, let me know. Maybe we can stop by your studio or meet for a beer!

(PERFORMING ARTISTS) The Cultural Exchange Fund (CEF): CULTURAL EXCHANGE FUND:
is a travel subsidy program supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to assist U.S. based presenters in building partnerships and collaborations with international touring artists, companies and their collaborators and in seeing the work of artists from around the world in its cultural context. Arts Presenters will award travel subsidies to individual presenters, presenting organizations and to groups of presenters traveling to see the work of artists, companies and/or to develop and advance projects with international artists and their collaborators. (ALL) Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts Residencies: The Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts in Nebraska City, NE offers 2- to 8-week residencies year-round for writers, visual artists, and music composers. Housing, studio space, $100/week stipend are provided. Visual artists work in one of three studios, two of which are approximately 425 square feet and one that is 258 square feet.

Approximately 50 residencies are awarded per year. Two deadlines each year: postmarked March 1 for the following July through December 15; postmarked September 1 for the following January through June 15. (ARTISTS) Homesession Residency in Barcelona, Spain: Homesession residency is a program for emerging visual artists in Barcelona, Spain. Its major singularity lies in the development of the artistic work in the context of a living place. Homesession aims at exploring new creation territories and being an open link toward the international emerging creation.

With the specificity that can give a private living place, the homesession residency investigate the dynamic links between the eye, the work, the environment and the artist. It can lead to an ephemeral work, a disposable intervention, an ordinary situation, a chaotic event, a documentation or an ambitious interface. For more info, go to: homesession.org

Visual artists, sculptors, dancers, musicians, poets and writers
have all spent time creating at New Light Guest House. The house, which once was home to local dairy workers, has been restored with modern amenities. There are two bedrooms, one bath, and a comfortable living room, complete with a separate kitchen/dining room. New Light Guest House accepts visitors by the month or week, but is willing to arrange a residency that fits the artist's schedule. This space was conceived for serious artists to find the peace and quiet, and the inspiration, to create great works. It is in this spirit that a fee of $250 per month is suggested, although New Light Studio does not wish for monetary concerns to prevent a visit. (MUSICIANS, SONGWRITERS & WRITERS) ISLAND Residency for Emerging Artists: ISLAND (the Institute for Sustainable Living, Art & Natural Design) is a new residency program in Michigan for emerging musicians, songwriters and writers at any stage of their careers. The deadline for their second round of residencies, which runs from November 2010 to April 2011 is September 15th. Writers and musicians are encouraged to apply to spend between two to four weeks in a semi-secluded log home near East Jordan, MI. BIG Fellowships & Grants for Writers: Summer Deadlines

Well, I recently got back from NYC after meeting with my editors, the book designer, and a million other great people at Free Press, the imprint of Simon & Schuster that is publishing my book, The Memory Palace. I am in the last leg of the production of this literary creature—I have to finish all the art and do several thousand more little things before it's actually sent off to be printed. I know I told you guys that I would do some posting on the book process, from start to finish, and I will, but it has become clear to me that I will be pretty crazy-busy until about mid-September. But if I can do anything on the subject before then, I will. In the meantime, I will just do my best to keep up with some deadlines. And speaking of writing and publishing books, here are some great opportunities for all you writers out there....Cheers, Mirabee.

(WRITERS) The Astrea Foundation Lesbian Writer's Fund: Two $10,000 grants to emerging lesbian poets and fiction writers. Two $1,500 grants are also given to finalists in each category. Applicants must have published work at least once in a newspaper, magazine, literary journal or anthology. For more information and guidelines, visit the website: http://www.astreafoundation.org. (POETS) Frost Place Resident Poet Award: A prize of $1,000 and a six to eight week residency at Robert Frost's former home in Franconia, New Hampshire, is given each year to a poet, who has published at least one poetry collection. (WRITERS) Fil Prize in Romance Languages: A prize of $150,000 is given annually to honor a poet, fiction writer, or creative nonfiction writer who writes in Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan, Italian, French, Galician, or Roumanian. The prize is awarded by a consortium of Mexican governmental agencies, universities and banks. Individuals may not apply but cultural or educational institutions, associations or other cultural groups may nominate a candidate. Submit the writer's CV and a letter of support by June 15th. ***In cases like this, it is usually okay to ask someone you know to nominate you, if you think they could write a great letter of support.

(WRITERS & SCHOLARS) The Howard Foundation Fellowships: The Howard Foundation awards a limited number of fellowships each year for independent projects in selected fields. The Foundation targets its support specifically to early mid-career individuals, those who have achieved recognition for at least one major project. Approximately ten fellowships will be awarded in April 2011 for 2011-2012 in the fields of Creative nonfiction, literary translation (into English), Film Studies, and Literary Studies.

Stipends of $25,000 will be awarded to support individuals working on specific writing projects for the academic year 2011-2012. Howard Fellowships may not be used to prepare exhibits or to support institutional programs. There are no residency requirements for individuals who receive awards. The deadline for submission of applications is November 1, 2010. Fellowship recipients will be announced in April 2011. (WOMEN WRITERS) Money for Women/Barbara Deming Memorial Fund:
Individual artist grants for women, $500 to $1,500 each are given twice yearly to feminist writers. Women poets and creative nonfiction writers who are US and Canadian citizens can apply. ***By the way, this organization really got hit hard by the crash. If you are feeling philanthropic this season, you might want to send them a wee donation. They could really use it!

(NONFICTION WRITERS) Richard J. Margolis Award: A stipend of $5,000 and a month-long residency at the Blue Mountain Center, an artists colony in Blue Mountain Lake, NY, is given annually to a nonfiction writer (including creative nonfiction but unfortunately, not memoir). Fellowships & Grants for Filmmakers, Writers, Playwrights and Photographers

(PLAYWRIGHTS) The P73 Playwriting Fellowship: provides year-long comprehensive support to one early-career playwright who has received neither wide public recognition nor substantial production opportunities in New York City. Through this program, Page 73 provides artistic and financial resources to one emerging playwright as he or she develops a new play that has not received substantial prior development support. (FILMMAKERS) Reach Film Fellowship: Cinereach is currently seeking applicants for its annual Reach Film $5,000 fellowship. Cinereach is a not-for-profit founded by a group of young filmmakers, philanthropists and entrepreneurs to champion artful, vital filmmaking. The prestigious seven-month program supports young filmmakers with grants, resources, and industry mentors who help guide their short films through all stages of production. The Fellowship is open to emerging, early-career filmmakers who have completed at least one short film and completed a film studies program by summer 2010. Self-taught filmmakers may also apply, but are advised to discuss their eligibility with Cinereach staff before submitting an application. Applicants must also be able to reside in the New York Tri-State area from August 2010 through April 2011 to meet the Fellowship requirements.

(WRITERS) CEI Fellowship for Writers: The CEI Fellowship for Writers in Residence encourages cross-border cooperation and promotion in the field of literature for young writers from non EU Central European countries. This winner will receive a cash award of EUR 5,000 for a three-month stay in any of the Central

(PHOTOGRAPHERS) Audience Engagement Grant: The Open Society Institute Documentary Photography Project is offering a grant to support alternative models for presenting and disseminating documentary photography to the public.

The Audience Engagement Grant (formerly the Distribution Grant) supports innovative projects that use existing bodies of work to actively engage audiences on human rights and social justice issues. Projects should include a partnership between individuals and organizations that combines expertise in documentary photography with experience working on the topic or community the project addresses. A third distribution partner, whose expertise is in the dissemination or presentation method, may also be included but is not required. The 2010 program will provide five to eight project grants ranging from $5,000 to $30,000 each.
