Grants for Artists & Writers with Children, Fellowships for Photographers, A New Residency with Stipend in Norway and More!

Greetings...first, a quick note to all of you who send me notices of opportunities from your organizations: I do not post about contests, opportunities to exhibit, etc. I really try to focus on finding people funding and residencies.

Below are a few things coming up—very soon and down the road. Also, I will be posting a new interview in a few days, this time with fantasy writer Robert V. S. Redick who has a new book coming out on April 19th called River of Shadows. (PHOTOGRAPHERS) Howard Fellowship—Stipends of $30,000 will be awarded to support photographers working on projects for the academic year 2011-2012. Howard Fellowships are intended primarily to provide artists and scholars with time to complete their work. They are not intended for publication subsidies, for equipment purchase, for preparation of exhibits, or to support institutional programs. There are no residency requirements for individuals who receive awards. The deadline for submission of applications is November 1, 2011. (ARTISTS & WRITERS) Sustainable Arts Foundation 2011 AwardsIn recognition of the challenges of leading a creative life while raising children, the Sustainable Arts Foundation provides financial support to writers and artists with families. They offer a number of $6,000 awards in both the Spring and in Winter. The applicant must have at least one child under the age of 18. They welcome applications from anywhere, but give some preference to residents of the San Francisco Bay area. In addition, they award a number of Promise Awards of smaller dollar figures to applicants whose work may not qualify for the main awards, but demonstrates both skill and potential. As with most grants, your portfolio aids the judges to rank you. They are also interested in hearing about your plans and how this award might assist you in attaining your goals. (WOMEN/PHOTOGRAPHERS) Magnum Foundation and Inge Morath Foundation - Inge Morath Award 2011—
The Magnum Foundation and the Inge Morath Foundation announce the tenth annual Inge Morath Award. The annual prize of $5,000 is awarded by the Magnum Foundation to a female documentary photographer under the age of 30, to support the completion of a long-term documentary project. One award winner and up to two finalists are selected by a jury composed of Magnum photographers. Deadline: 30 April, 2011! (WOMEN ARTISTS) New Canadian Artist Residency At MAWA, Winnipeg, Manitoba—Two deadlines: April 29, 2011 (for residencies in 2011) and October 28, 2011 (for residencies in 2012) MAWA is offering their urban, loft-style apartment to women visual artists for residencies of 2-4 weeks in duration. Applicants can use this space and time for research, reflection, networking and/or production. They will provide free accommodation and a $300 honorarium.

(ALL/ENVIRONMENTAL ARTISTS) Chesapeake Bay residency—Annmarie’s residency program provides a serene place on the Western Shore of the Chesapeake Bay for visual, musical, and literary artists to create works that address ecological issues and/or inspire community involvement. Residencies are meant to focus on merging the arts and the environment and should include the involvement of the local community to some capacity. Spring/Fall Residencies: residents are required to work with field trip groups and/or school outreach programs as scheduled. Summer Residency: summer residents are required to design a public art project that engages the visitors to Annmarie Garden in the art-making process. Summer residents are required to work alongside the public for at least 12 hours/week.
Studio InformationResident artists have access to studio space within the living quarters (one bedroom), and are also welcome to use other gallery and classroom space as available. Annmarie has a modest ceramics studio with a kiln, slab roller, and potter’s wheels that are also available for use, as well as a painting studio with easels. With numerous indoor and outdoor exhibition and installation options, artists are encouraged think creatively about how and where to display their work. Artists should bring their own equipment. (ARTISTS) AiR Sandnes Residency in Stavanger, NorwaySandnes City Council and Rogaland County Council, offer a residency to professional artists. The artist can be from abroad, a Norwegian national or a regional artist wanting an alternative project space. The offer consists of a 1-3 months residency in a rent-free studio with accommodation situated in the city of Sandnes in the municipality of Rogaland, close to the city of Stavanger.

The art studio is situated in the same building as several other artist studios at Stasjon K, right next to Kinokino – Centre for Art and Film. Housing is located at the city end of the largest park in Sandnes, Sandvedparken, about a five-minute walk from the city centre and studio space. In addition to a one-person bed the flat has a sofa that can turn into a two-person bed. On those premises we can accommodate for collaborators, a couple, or possibly a family of three.

The organization also provides funding—all artists receive 1,000 Euro per month. There is no specific application form. The application should contain a CV, a brief project proposal, documentation of earlier works and preferably some info about yourself as an artist and your artistic practice. Filmmakers should have demonstrated a commitment to the craft of making documentaries with several years (but no more than 10) of practical film or video experience. (VIDEO/FILM) The Roy W. Dean New York City Video GrantFunds Shorts, Documentaries, and Independent Features under $500,000. Funds films that are unique and make a contribution to society, that tell compelling stories about little known subjects. Seeking films that expose and bring important information to light through story. Projects with strong story-telling aspects are most likely to be awarded grants. Projects must be original, but may be of any length and may be works-in-progress. Independent filmmakers, student filmmakers, independent producers, and independent production companies may all submit.

Winner receives over $18,000 worth of equipment, services, and consultations toward completing project; for a breakdown of products and services, see website. Submit a sample of previous work, along with a two-page project proposal describing the target audience for the film, plans for distribution, how the project is unique and how it benefits society, your relationship to the material, a synopsis, stylistic approach to the material, and a list of names and positions of proposed key production personnel. That was pretty disappointing BUT my reading at Book Cellar has been rescheduled for September 22nd, 2011 and there will be another reading in the Chicago area that week as well, probably in Winnetka. (MUSICIANS/COMPOSERS) Exploring the Metropolis administers the Con Edison Musicians’ Residency: Composition Program. Heading into its third year, this expanding program serves three constituencies: (1) composers get consistent, long-term, private creative space; (2) host cultural facilities fill underused space and also present the composer in a public program; (3) the community is invited to at least one free program – a master class, an opera-in-progress, etc. This year, we will be expanding the program to accommodate 8 NYC-based composers in 4 sites (Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens). (DANCERS/ PERFORMING ARTS/FILM) Dance MOViES Commission ProgramThe Experimental Media & Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY is now accepting proposals for the DANCE MOViES Commission program. Selected artists receive awards ranging up to $40,000, and can also apply to create their works in conjunction with the Artist-in-Residence program at EMPAC. Works commissioned may take advantage of EMPAC’s infrastructure and technology, such as computer-controlled rigging, flexible black-box studios, and post-production engineering for audio and video. Previously commissioned works range from a punk marching band creating mayhem in the streets of Chicago to a poetic film based on the autobiographical account of a US-based African choreographer returning to dance in Zimbabwe. The primary emphasis is to promote public awareness and a commitment to American art, as well as encouraging interest in artists who lack adequate recognition. (ARTISTS) Galeria Bielska BWA is happy to announce the first edition of Artist In Residence programme. Artists from around the world working in the field of visual arts, are kindly invited to send a proposal for a site-specific work, an intervention in the public space of the Bielsko-Biała city.

During three months artists will have the time and chance to research, develop and make an art project in the public space which will relate to the subject of Beyond the time and to the history of the city. Besides the opportunity of showing your work in a public space Galeria Bielska BWA will include the digital presentation of the works made during the residency in the exhibition 1st of September. The Gallery provides two apartments, living room, fully furnished with kitchen and bathroom. Artist pays own travel expenses, materials and personal needs.

Greetings all! Thank you for your patience while my book tour is raging on....I hope to see some of you at one of the readings. A couple years ago I spoke at the TransCultural Exchange Conference for Opportunities in the Arts in Boston and am going to do a presentation again, as well as do a reading at the Boston Public Library (along with authors Reif Larsen and Jayne Anne Phillips). I’ll be moderating a panel on first books—from finding an agent to promoting your first book—with novelist Jedediah Berry and poet Marisa Crawford. I’ll be representing the memoir/creative nonfiction voice on the panel.

(WRITERS) Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission, United States/Japan Creative Artists ResidencyUp to five five-month residencies, each of which includes a monthly stipend of 600,000 yen (approximately $7,100) for living expenses, housing, and professional support, are awarded annually to published U.S. poets, fiction writers, and creative nonfiction writers to live in Japan and pursue creative projects. The residencies are sponsored by the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission in conjunction with the National Endowment for the Arts. The residencies also each include a travel grant of up to $6,000. (ALL) Byrdcliffe Art Colony ResidenciesThe Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild offers month long Artist in Residence (AIR) opportunities for visual artists, composers, playwrights/screenwriters, and writers of fiction, nonfiction and poetry. Longer residencies are available for ceramic artists. The AIR sessions generally occur during the months of June, July, August, and September. Our goal is to provide solitude in a community and uninterrupted time in which to concentrate on creative work alongside fellow artists. Opened in 1903, the Byrdcliffe Art Colony was placed on the National Register of Historic Sites in 1979 for its architectural and historical significance. (WRITERS) Authors League Fund Emergency Funds: The Authors League Fund was established by the Authors League of America, Inc., to help career authors and dramatists in the United States and in financial distress due to an urgent situation. Projects should appeal to Asian American viewers AND to a broader TV audience. CAAM considers most genres, including drama, documentary, experimental, animation, and mixed genre. (FILMMAKERS) San Francisco Film Society / Kenneth Rainin Foundation Filmmaking Grants Program (Fall, 2011) – Provides funding for narrative feature films made in the San Francisco Bay Area that, through plot, character, theme, or setting, significantly explore human and civil rights, anti-discrimination, gender and sexual identity, and other urgent social justice issues of our time. Grants support screenwriting and script development, preproduction, and post-production expenses. In addition to a cash grant, recipients will receive a range of benefits through the society’s filmmaker services programs. (LANDSCAPE ARTISTS/DESIGNERS) CDAN Research Grants: Think Landscape 2010: Fundación Beulas, through the CDAN, is launching in 2010 its first research grants, for the purpose of promoting studies of the theoretical aspects of landscape, encouraging drafting general projects that may pave the way for further studies. The research projects that may be awarded this grant will address the generic theme of landscape, conceived in all its facets: artistic, aesthetic, historical, geographical, patrimonial, economical, territorial, biological, etc.

The grant is intended for individual researchers, from the European Union and Latin American countries, who demonstrate their experience, such as doctoral professors, though it is not necessary that they be attached to a university. (MFA STUDENTS/VISUAL ARTS) CAA Professional Development Fellowships:
Full details on the recently restored Professional-Development Fellowships in the Visual Arts, including the application form, have just been posted to the CAA website.

Later this fall, CAA will award five grants of $5,000 each to outstanding students who will receive MFA degrees in calendar year 2011. Honorable mentions, awarded at the discretion of the jury, will receive a free one-year CAA membership and complimentary registration to the Annual Conference.

CAA’s Professional-Development Fellowships in the Visual Arts offer financial assistance to promising MFA candidates. Fellows are honored with grants to help them with various aspects of their work, whether it be for job-search expenses or purchasing materials for the studio. CAA believes a grant of this kind, without contingencies, can best facilitate the transition between graduate studies and professional careers. (FILM) Reach Film Fellowship: Cinereach is currently seeking applicants for its annual Reach Film Fellowship (RFF), a seven-month program that pairs filmmakers with a $5,000 grant, mentorship and other resources as they make artful short films with socially relevant themes. The fellowship is open to emerging filmmakers who have completed at least one short film. Applicants must reside in the New York Tri-State area from August through April of 2010/2011. (ALL) Seaside, Florida Residencies: Escape to Create offers two four-week sessions are offered every January and February to artists working in the literary arts, musical composition, scholarship, visual and interdisciplinary arts. 2011 residency sessions are: January 3 - 30 or January 31 - February 27. Artists live and work in private cottages or apartments that have been generously donated in support of their creative work. Travel costs are the responsibility to the artist. Artists receive a $100 weekly stipend and are provided a weekly group dinner in a home environment. Artists are required to contribute community service such as a reading, a performance, or a lecture. School visitations are also encouraged. Deadline June 15, 2010.

(ALL) Caldera Residencies in Portland, OR: Each winter, National and International visual artists, writers, dancers, choreographers, musicians, composers, interdisciplinary artists, collaborators, performance artists, media and design artists, architects, scientists and engineers apply to come to caldera for month-long residencies. Each accepted resident is given the time, space and solitude to devote themselves to their work in a private creek-side cottage with additional rehearsal and studio space nearby. Since caldera's residencies are designed to support the creative process, we don't require residents to produce a specific product. Deadline June 15, 2010.

Fellowships & Grants for Filmmakers, Writers, Playwrights and Photographers

(PLAYWRIGHTS) The P73 Playwriting Fellowship: provides year-long comprehensive support to one early-career playwright who has received neither wide public recognition nor substantial production opportunities in New York City. Through this program, Page 73 provides artistic and financial resources to one emerging playwright as he or she develops a new play that has not received substantial prior development support. The P73 Playwriting Fellow receives a cash stipend in the amount of $5,000 and development support in the amount of $10,000 – 15,000. The fellow is expected to be present in New York City from time to time to fully engage in the opportunities that the fellowship provides.

(FILMMAKERS) Reach Film Fellowship: Cinereach is currently seeking applicants for its annual Reach Film $5,000 fellowship. Cinereach is a not-for-profit founded by a group of young filmmakers, philanthropists and entrepreneurs to champion artful, vital filmmaking. The prestigious seven-month program supports young filmmakers with grants, resources, and industry mentors who help guide their short films through all stages of production. The Fellowship is open to emerging, early-career filmmakers who have completed at least one short film and completed a film studies program by summer 2010. (PHOTOGRAPHERS) Audience Engagement Grant: The Open Society Institute Documentary Photography Project is offering a grant to support alternative models for presenting and disseminating documentary photography to the public.

The Audience Engagement Grant (formerly the Distribution Grant) supports innovative projects that use existing bodies of work to actively engage audiences on human rights and social justice issues. Projects should include a partnership between individuals and organizations that combines expertise in documentary photography with experience working on the topic or community the project addresses. A third distribution partner, whose expertise is in the dissemination or presentation method, may also be included but is not required. The 2010 program will provide five to eight project grants ranging from $5,000 to $30,000 each.

(ALL) Residencies for Scholars and Creative ArtistsThe Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Center: Residencies allow for disciplined work uninterrupted by the usual professional and personal demands. Residency participants include scholars, scientists, artists, journalists, writers, non-governmental organization practitioners and policymakers from around the world. Collegial interaction with the other residents is an integral dimension of the Bellagio experience. Meals and informal presentations of residents’ work afford an opportunity for dynamic discussion and engagement with each other. During special dinners, residents may be able to interact with participants in international conferences hosted in various buildings on the Center’s property. The Center also offers collaborative residencies for two to four persons working on the same project. Creative artists in all fields and scholars in all disciplines from any country are welcome to apply. A residency is typically four weeks in length. (PLAYWRIGHTS) The Princess Grace Awards Playwright Fellowship: given annually to a young American playwright, consists of a $7,500 grant and a ten-week residence, including paid travel, at New Dramatists, a playwright service organization, in New York City. The award is based primarily on the artistic quality of a submitted play and the potential of the fellowship to assist in the writer's growth. (WRITERS) The Kerouac Writer-in-Residence Project: The Kerouac Project provides four residencies a year to writers of any stripe or age, living anywhere in the world. Each residency consists of approximately a three month stay in the cottage where Jack Kerouac wrote his novel Dharma Bums. Utilities and a food stipend of $800 are included. All you are required to do is work on your writing project and give a reading in the house at the end of your residency. The Project also offers opportunities to you for readings, leading workshops and interacting with the Central Florida Community in various ways. From time to time during your stay you will be asked to participate when the house is used for events such as readings and workshops for local students or book groups. (ARTISTS) Henry Moore Foundation Artist Fellowships and Grants:
The Foundation awards grants worth up to £6,000 each to artist, supported by host institutions, for fellowships or residencies between 2-6 months. Joint applications may be made at any time and the number of fellowships awarded will depend on the resources available in any year.

The Henry Moore Foundation also offers other grants to visual artists—The Foundation’s grants program is focused on specific objectives. It is the Trustees’ policy to support all aspects of the arts in which Henry Moore himself was engaged, e.g. sculpture, drawing and print-making. Projects in the UK may include the work of artists from any country. Overseas projects must contain a British component, e.g. a British artist. (New projects grants: This includes exhibitions, exhibition catalogues and commissions. (COMPOSERS) soundSCAPE Fellowship in Italy: In 2010 soundSCAPE will be held on Lake Maggiore in the Italian Alps, just minutes from international borders of France and Switzerland. Festival dates are 14 - 25, July, 2010. The festival now known as soundSCAPE debuted in 2005 as an initiative to bring together composers and performers interested in new music. soundSCAPE is now accepting proposals for a composer in residence for the 2010 summer season. The fellowship involves: the composition of one work for faculty ensemble (piano, soprano, & percussion); the possibility of additional performances of other compositions; mentoring composer participants at festival (lessons, master classes); one or more lectures; opportunities to perform (if applicable). soundSCAPE provides round trip travel (airfare/train), accommodation, meals.

(ARTISTS) Fonds BKVB Grants: Fonds BKVB in the Netherlands has a wide variety of grants for Dutch nationals and International artists living in the Netherlands who have legal residency: A basic stipend intends to enable visual artists and autonomous designers to maintain a basic level of professional practice. A basic stipend (€ 36.000) consists of a contribution to basic living costs (€ 21.000) and a contribution to professional expenses (€15.000). Only visual artists and autonomous designers who have been professionally active for longer than eight years are eligible for a basic stipend. A basic stipend is intended to cover a period of at least two years. This stipend can be awarded only once every four years. (ALL) Step-Beyond Travel Grants: Mobility is the life-blood of cultural cooperation. Artists and cultural workers need to move easily across borders to meet their international peers, exchange views, cooperate, and influence one another. ECF's mobility programme is called STEP beyond. Their mobility fund stimulates and supports cross-cultural creative projects in a wider Europe, enabling artists and cultural workers to collaborate, exchange, network and explore unfamiliar ground and different ways of working.

(FILMMAKERS) The All Roads Film Project Grants: The All Roads Film Project is a National Geographic program dedicated to providing a platform for indigenous and underrepresented minority-culture storytellers around the world to showcase their works to promote knowledge, dialogue, and understanding with a broader, global audience.

The seed-grant program is open to indigenous and underrepresented minority-culture filmmakers as well as filmmakers who can demonstrate that they have been designated by indigenous or minority communities to tell their story. Grant funds should be used toward the development and production of a feature film, long documentary, short documentary, shorts, animation, or music video. Funding may be used for equipment, travel for field research, editing time, etc. All Roads Film Project Seed Grants range up to a maximum of $10,000. (POETS) Ruth Lilly Poetry Fellowships: Five Ruth Lilly Poetry Fellowships in the amount of $15,000 are available to poets between the ages of 21 and 31. Established in 1989 by the Indianapolis philanthropist Ruth Lilly, the fellowships are intended to encourage the further study and writing of poetry. Applications must be made via the submission form at https://fellowships.poetryfoundation.org/. Application materials sent via e-mail or standard mail will not be considered. (WRITERS) The Richard J. Margolis Award: The Richard J. Margolis Award of Blue Mountain Center combines a one-month residency at Blue Mountain Center with a $5,000 prize. It is awarded annually to a promising new journalist or essayist whose work combines warmth, humor, wisdom and concern with social justice.
