Mirabee Update

Hi everyone! I just came back from NYC----the last of my book tour events for THE MEMORY PALACE. Thanks to all of you who came out to hear me read this week in NYC and last week in CT. The paperback is coming out early—August 9th! So all of this starts again. If you have a book club, you should know that the paperback version of my book will have a great book club reader's guide in it as well as an author Q & A.

Anyway, I'm going to post a new interview shortly but first, I want to let you know that I will be out of the country from April 26th to May 11th, then at a conference until May 15th. So you probably won't hear from me in a little while unless I can get computer access where I will be staying overseas. If not, have a great couple/few weeks and check out the interview I'm about to post!

Happy Earth Day!

Mirabee

Mirabee is Reading in NYC Next Week!

Greetings all,

Well, I’m back from the TransCultural Exchange Conference in Boston where I got to meet people from all over the world who run artists residencies. I'll be posting some deadlines from those places over the next few weeks and months as well as an interview or two. If you can make the conference in two years, I highly suggest going! And if you plan ahead, you can apply for a scholarship as well as a small professional development grant from your local arts agency so you can help pay for your trip. I hope to see some of you there in 2013!

The other thing I wanted to tell you is that I will be coming to NYC next week to read from my book The Memory Palace. This is the last leg of my book tour until the paperback comes out in late summer. If you are around and can come and hear me read, please do! On Tuesday, April 19th, I'll be reading at the Strand Book Store, 828 Broadway, at 7 pm and on Wednesday, April 20th, I'll be reading at Cake Shop, 152 Ludlow Street at 7 pm with writers Moshe Shulman and Emily Rubin, followed by the band Flutterbox.

And tonight I'll be at the Fairfield Public Library, 1080 Old Post Road in Fairfield, CT at 7 pm. I hope to see some of you at one of these events!

Calling All Emerging Writers, Painters Over 45, Musicians, Dancers and Other Creative Creatures in Need of Sustenance!

Hey everyone, Mirabee is still alive and kicking! Sorry about not seeing some of you in Chicago. That was pretty disappointing BUT my reading at Book Cellar has been rescheduled for September 22nd, 2011 and there will be another reading in the Chicago area that week as well, probably in Winnetka. Stay tuned....

For now, I'm trying not to sit long at the computer so I'll be brief (still very much on the mend....not great but not bad)....just want to remind you all that this coming week I will be reading at Raab Auditorium at the Boston Public Library at a free event sponsored by TransculturalExchange. My reading will be on Thursday, April 7th at 6:30 but please come to the other readings as well: Reif Larsen (reading at 5:30 pm) the amazing author of The Collected Works of T. S. Spivet, a genre-breaking illustrated novel and Jayne Anne Phillips (reading at 7:30) wonderful author of several books, most recently Lark and Termite. For more info about this event and the rest of the conference (YOU CAN STILL REGISTER FOR THE ENTIRE CONFERENCE, believe it or not!), please go here: http://transculturalexchange.org/conference_2011/schedule.htm

Also, for those of you in the Boston area who are interested in learning more about publishing your first book, from finding an agent, working with editors to promoting your book, you are more than welcome to come to on yet another TCE sponsored free public eventFriday afternoon, April 8th from 1:30 to 3:30 pm in the Boston Room at the Boston Public Library. I'll be moderating a panel with novelist and editor Jedediah Berry (The Manual of Detection) and poet Marissa Crawford (The Haunted House). For more info, go here: http://transculturalexchange.org/conference_2011/schedule.htm

I'll also be reading at Fairfield Library in Fairfield, CT on April 14th AND in New York Friggin' City on April 19th and 20th. I'll be at the Strand on the 19th and The Cake Shop on the 20th. Please check my calendar for details: www.thememorypalace.com.

Enough of THAT stuff, on to YOU:

(MUSICIANS/COMPOSERS) Exploring the Metropolis administers the Con Edison Musicians’ Residency: Composition Program. Heading into its third year, this expanding program serves three constituencies: (1) composers get consistent, long-term, private creative space; (2) host cultural facilities fill underused space and also present the composer in a public program; (3) the community is invited to at least one free program – a master class, an opera-in-progress, etc. This year, we will be expanding the program to accommodate 8 NYC-based composers in 4 sites (Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens). The Memory Palace Book Launch!

Happy New Year everyone! I hope you all had a great holiday and that this new year brings you much success in all your creative endeavors. I apologize for being a bit out of touch. Things have gone a little wonky on the home front because of my book coming out all over the U.S., Canada and the U.K. this coming Tuesday, Jan. 11th. I am about to go on book tour starting Monday until late April. However, I will do my best to post opportunities during my down times. I promise!

So without further ado, please forgive my shameless self-promotion at the moment because I really need to rally all my readers and friends and tell them about my bookThe Memory Palace. Please, if you feel so inclined, spread the word about it, share my website (which has up-to-date info on my readings, reader’s guide and info for book clubs, resources, a blog and more ) and if you can afford it, buy a book!

Below are a couple things coming up. I am also sharing with you the book trailer I did with my husband, Doug Plavin, for the book. And please check my calendar on my website to see if I will be reading anywhere near you. It would be so great to meet some of you! I will definitely be reading in: LA, Pasadena, San Francisco and Berkeley, Chicago, Cleveland, Boston, and a bunch of Northeastern towns in the U.S.

Thanks for supporting me so much the last couple years and I hope to see you at one of my events. And don’t worry—I will keep on posting about grants, fellowships and residencies. Read on below....xox Mirabee

Tuesday, January 11th, my book comes out in stores! And I’ll also be on the radio, live on WNYC, talking with Leonard Lopate on his show: http://www.wnyc.org/shows/lopate/

Check out the review of The Memory Palace in O Magazine: http://www.oprah.com/book/The-Memory-Palace-by-Mira-Bartok, listed as one of fifteen books to read in 2011. There are lots more reviews out there available and on the way: Elle, Bust, Bitch, Whole Living, Psychology Today, Washington Post, Cleveland Plain Dealer, More, and a bunch of others that frankly, I can’t recall where and when. Some have already been out there and some are coming soon. I’ll try to post links on my memory palace site when I can. It’s all been a bit overwhelming, to say the least!

Here’s the book trailer as promised, made thanks to my new venture called North of Radio, a multi-media collaborative I just started with my husband (the website is going up in a day or so so if it’s not up yet, please check back). Thanks and I will post again as soon as I can! Wish me luck!

Would You Do A Favor for Mirabee? Pretty Please?

Greetings all!

Okay, indulge me for a moment while I shamelessly promote my new book coming out this January, called The Memory Palace. I will bug you guys to buy it soon and also alert you when my new memory palace website and blog are up (very soon! maybe this week!) but for now, would you please watch the book trailer I just made (my first project for North of Radio, a multi-media collaborative I am starting with my husband)? If you go to youtube and watch it, please do the following:
1. share it with EVERYONE!
2. click on the LIKE button
3. post it on your facebook page or some other social-networking site
4. tweet about it if you use twitter AND...
if you have a youtube account, sign in a write a comment. If you don't have
an account (they're free), you can do that first.

But at the very least, please watch the trailer and pass it on. Now, don't you want to do something nice for Mirabee during this holiday season? Come on...I know you do!

Thanks for the little indulgence. I try not to ask for much...:-) Click here and go VIRAL!: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mE5j8NIrXRg

"Finding Money for Your Dreams" Redux

Greetings all,

Just wanted to let you know that, thanks to Marie Kazalia, my long article, "Finding Money for Your Dreams" was just sited on Artist News and linked to the blog Artist Marketing Salon. You can read the piece here: http://artistmarketingsalon.wordpress.com/2010/06/05/article-by-mira-bartok-the-grant-queen/and also peruse their site for a plethora of opportunities and artist marketing advice. The article isn't just for visual artists but for artists of all kinds. It's a reprint of a piece I had published on my blog a year or two ago.

Cheers,

Mirabee

BOOKS BY MIRA!

Hi again. Just so you know, I uploaded a bunch of my books on different cultures for you to purchase, if you so desire (see bottom of page). Each book in the Stencil Book Series contains a set of stencils and info on each country or culture, along with history, lifeways, art, ritual information, myths and folklore. Great for the classroom or for museum workshops, if any of you are teachers out there. I originally wrote and developed the book series for children, grades three and up, but many artists (and others) like the books just for the designs (like Dover books only with much more information). There's also a four book Early Reader series for young children, with photos and text about Native American cultures. Every book you buy from my site helps to support Mira's List a tiny bit more! So scroll down to the bottom of the blog and you will find not only grant and arts books but now you'll find some books by me! Thanks.
Mira

SWEET DREAMS

Well...for your information, the interview I did on the radio today with wonderful Mo Ringey at Valley Free Radio went really well and was a blast but...due to the spontaneous and meandering nature of the show, we ended up talking nearly the entire time about my forthcoming book, The Memory Palace, which left only about five minutes of air time to chat about Mira's List and how to find residencies, fellowships and grants. Sorry everyone! But I had to follow the flow of conversation and my radio host's interest ao it just turned out that way. Anyway, I promise I will do another sometime in the not so distant future. I might post the recording anyway, once I edit it a bit, just so you can hear about my book (and a little about this blog).

I have one more day of final edits and then my book is going out. I'll get back to hunting things down for you over the weekend, if not before. In the meantime, TAKE MY NEW TWO SECOND POLL on the right side bar...keep making art, apply for everything and be fearless! Sweet dreams....Mirabee

RADIO INTERVIEW TOMORROW, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 17th!

Well, believe it or not, it's really true. The radio interview is going to happen tomorrow morning (Wednesday, June 17th) from 8 to 9 a.m. EST, so if you are in the Pioneer Valley in Massachusetts, tune in to 103.3 FM or go to http://www.valleyfreeradio.org and stream it live. I will be on Mo Ringey's Valley Free Radio (Mo Radio) talking about Mira's List and how all you people can get money, time and a place to create. If you aren't in the area, you'll be able to listen to the interview sometime soon after at http://www.benigngirl.wordpress.com or www.valleyfreeradio.org. OR check back here at Mira's List because I'll post an MP3 of the interview on my blog.

RANDOM THOUGHTS

It's late and I'm off to bed but I had a couple random thoughts....first, I wanted to remind you all that there is only one more day left to fill out my fun two second poll on the right hand sidebar. More polls to come, by the way... I also wanted to thank a couple people who recently sent donations. One artist sent donations twice in the last couple months! Thank you Amy! Every little bit counts, even those five to fifteen dollar donations. Another loyal fan sent me an incredible photograph (thank you Simen.) And I especially want to express my gratitude to artist, curator and blogger Catherine Tedford (AKA Sticker Kitty) who bleeps me announcements all the time and who tells everyone in the world about my blog. Thank you, thank you, thank you. You're the best! And speaking of announcements, you should be aware that a lot of residencies have September 15th deadlines. I will post more of them soon, but don't forget to check out the links on the lower right for residencies (resartis.org, transartists.org, artistcommunities.org, etc.). They have hundreds of residencies just waiting to be discovered by you. And if you prefer browsing through a book that gives excellent descriptions of residencies all over the world, go to the lower right sidebar and click on the blue book: Artists Communities: A Directory of Residencies that Offer Time and Space for Creativity (the second book listed). Most if not all of the places inside the book are still active residencies. Sometimes it's nice to do research the old fashioned way, you know? Buy the book from me and I get a wee percentage! Have a great weekend...more wonderous things to come....Mira

RADIO INTERVIEW POSTPONED TILL JUNE

BREAKING NEWS: I'm sorry to say that my radio interview tomorrow on Valley Free Radio has to be postponed until June, probably June 3rd, but I'll let you know soon. There was a technical snafu and the equipment is down this week. But I promise that you'll be able to hear my slightly nasal Midwestern twang very, very soon. In the meantime, why not peruse this site and find the perfect grant or residency? Talk to you later and have a great eve...and thanks for visiting.

I'LL BE ON THE RADIO TOMORROW, WEDNESDAY, MAY 13th

RADIO INTERVIEW! First of all, I want to tell everyone that tomorrow, on Wednesday, May 13, from 8 am to 9 am (EASTERN STANDARD TIME), I will be speaking about Mira's List on an indie radio station in Western Massachusetts called Valley Free Radio. The show is called "Mo Radio" and I will be informally chatting about the blog, opportunities for artists and other related info. Tune in at 103.3 FM if you are in Massachusetts' Pioneer Valley, or stream it live at www.valleyfreeradio.org OR check back on Mira's List in a week or so, sooner or later, and I will have it posted as a downloadable MP3 file. You can also check the radio station a couple days after the show is aired as there should be a link to the podcast (filed at the link under “Mo Radio” at right.) For more info about the interview and me, go to Mo Ringey's blog called Benign Girl. And just so you know, you radio fans, down the road, I will be doing interviews with artists and writers, etc. who have gone to residencies and get their feedback and their stories as well as interviews with residency and grant foundation directors. With my partner, musician and music producer, Doug Plavin, we are setting up a production company called North of Radio (website to come) that will help facilitate podcasts on this blog.

On another note, have I told you lately how much I love doing this blog? Well, I do. Today in my mailbox were letters from artists from as far away as India, the Netherlands, the UK and elsewhere. Not to mention those of you who posted thank-you's and great questions and requests on my Calling All Artists post where I ask (and still asking) everyone to tell me how you found this blog and tell me what you are looking for in terms of a grant, fellowship or residency. Essentially: What is Your Dream? Anyway, thank you, thank you, thank you for visiting this site, passing on the word, and providing me with such great feedback. I will develop an FAQ link in the future, it's just that I'm on deadline with my book right now. I am in the process of reading and compiling everyone's comments and questions that I have received from that posting and also privately from emails and will, over time, try to answer all your questions. (By the way, also check out an earlier question and answer post. You might find a couple questions you have answered there. You can also go to the sidebar at the right and look for the label "question and answer forum" for more Q and A's on MFA programs, residencies, grants, etc). I'll answer a couple easy questions right now and then do more over time...

Q: When you post grant opportunities, are those for U.S. citizens only?
A: Excellent question. It's only recently that I have realized that I not only have artists from the U.S. visiting my site but artists from all over the world. I would say that just about 100 percent of the residencies I post are for international artists, however, the grants are mostly for U.S. citizens, only because that is my largest audience and also, it is an area that I know pretty well. I spend so much time as it is doing research and compiling what I know and keeping up with deadlines, all for gratis (yes, please donate! Please buy books on my site, and more are coming soon!) that I simply can't do it all. That said, I will A. keep a look-out for grants that are also for non-US citizens and B. try to tell you when I know that a grant I'm posting IS for all citizens EVERYWHERE. I hope I find more of those and I promise that I will do the best I can to seek them out, given my limited resources and time.

Q: Where can I find your own art and/or writing?
A: Well, the thing is that I really didn't plan for this blog to be the Mira Show and had no intention of ever posting my art or books since this blog is really about YOU and furthering your dreams. But so many people have been asking me, which is a surprise, that I thought I better answer that question. Here goes:

I was a visual artist for many years and had a gallery in NYC (and exhibited across the US and some places in Europe). These were the years before the digital world took off so a lot of that work is not scanned (yet). Anyway, I showed mostly egg tempera paintings, drawings and artists' books. Also, some experimental short films. But in the mid-90s, I began to write more seriously and started publishing. I started out writing books for children on various cultures (I might start selling those on this site soon so keep an eye open for that), then essays and articles in literary magazines, and now I have just finished my first book for adults, an illustrated memoir called The Memory Palace. You can't find it yet as it is going to be sent out by my agent next month. I'll keep you posted about what happens.

If all goes well, the book should be in stores within the year or so. When it comes out (which will have a lot of my art in it by the way, new and old), there will be a website set up for the book and I'll post a link on my sidebar. I'm not posting any of my art anywhere on the web right now as a lot of it is going into my book and I just don't want to mess around with copyright issues before the book is out. And I don't have a website for my art because I have been mostly writing these past few years. You can look at my professional bio on the right-hand side bar for some of the places I have published. Thanks for your interest in my own work. I didn't expect that at all.

Keep on working hard, keep on applying, and when you get rejected (if you do), use the rejection form to create a collage, a poem or the bull's eye for your dart board. Cheers all, Mira

CALLING ALL ARTISTS, WRITERS, COMPOSERS, MUSICIANS, DANCERS, etc.

PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT: So I have been getting wonderful messages from people all over the world, thanking me for this blog, people from as far away as Ghana, Hungary, Sweden, and Brazil. I know I need to set up a poll to find out where the heck you guys are finding this site but until I do that, I kind of prefer the more personal approach, which is to: A. ask you how you found this blog and B: ask you to leave a comment below about what it is in particular you are looking for (a grant to travel to West Africa, for instance, or you are an emerging painter looking for a fellowship to study in Italy for a year or you are a mid-career writer who wants to just write poetry for a month, or you are a composer who just lost his job and needs emergency funding, etc.). I will read everything I get and store it into my wee brain for future postings.

As most of you know, I do this for free and am currently unemployed (let's hope I get a big advance on my book...soon to be sent out to publishers!) so I can't promise immediate action on your requests but anything you tell me will help shape the evolution of this blog so I can serve you better. And knowing where you are all finding me will help me in the future when I try to actually sit down and make an effort to be visible on search engines. I'm just trying to keep up with posting right now. Anyway, I am hoping that down the road, perhaps MFA programs or low-residency programs will want to advertise on my site so that can help it keep going. And I promise I will never put any flashing annoying pop-up ads on it, ever! That is one of the reasons I created this site. I cannot stand those hard-to-navigate-everything-but-the-kitchen-sink flashy arts websites that not only are impossible to read but they also charge money. I never want to charge for this site if I can help it. So please, if you have a second, tell me where you found me in a brief message and let me know if you are looking for anything in particular. Here at Mira's List, we live to serve. Well. We also live for art, dogs, music, food, graphic novels, baby animals, love, dreams, and the luminous sea. Cheers y'all. Mira

I'M COMING TO NYC

Okay, this is shameless promotion. Sometimes you just gotta do it....I am reading in NYC (along with a couple other people) from an anthology I'm in that is coming out soon. I'm announcing it on my blog because if any of you faithful bloglettees are from the city, I'd love to meet you! So come on down to the KGB Bar (85 East 4th St., between Bowery and 2nd Ave.) on Tuesday, April 28th, at 7 pm to hear me read from Dirt: The Quirks, Habits, and Passions of Keeping House, along with other writers Janice Eidus, Mindy Lewis (editor) and Rebecca McClanahan. It's free! AND it has nothing to do with grants, fellowships and residencies.

On another note: I'm in the middle of revising a book and am on deadline, so my postings are not as frequent as I'd like them to be. That should change in about a month or so. Some of you have sent me great requests and ideas and I plan to honor them...a couple things coming down the road, along with the usual deadline here and there: Fulbright grant tips (coming this weekend I hope), more info on environmental residencies, and info on residencies in Latin America. I also have plans to do some interviews with residency and grant foundation directors as well as artists whose careers have benefited greatly from particular residencies. But that's later down the road....as you know, I do this for free and it takes a lot of time. But I love doing it and I love hearing from all of you. And it was especially cool to connect with some of you who came to hear me at the TCE conference in Boston.
Best wishes and happy spring...hope to see some of you down in NYC at the end of the month. Mirabee

COMING SOON!

Greetings loyal and new followers of this blog. I am just starting out in this blogging world and have a lot to learn so please be patient. I do this for free and my learning curve is steep. But soon there will be lots of new things on this blog, including: links for visual artists, musicians and composers; info on nature/environmental arts sites and residencies; links to books on grant-writing and residencies; a larger and more user friendly template; better labeling; a button to make donations (so I can buy socks or a tube of paint or perhaps a sturdy umbrella); podcasts; a featured residency of the week or month with photos; interviews with arts professionals and more. Oh. There will be a place for "Swagville." You'll be able to purchase items to shamelessly promote this little site. So thanks for your patience and your support and all the emails I get from my orginal listserve peeps who have been very appreciative. Please feel free to leave comments and if you have any special requests about what you'd like to see on this site, email me (click on the upper right hand corner where it says "email me!". And please do two things if you can: whenever you come to my site, click on all those little google ads. That way, in about two hundred years, I'll be able to buy a small country. The other request is: if you know any other sites that would just love to list this blog, such as your MFA program, a local arts org., or some other site, please pass it on. Thank you so much. And remember...if you have trouble accessing any of the websites I list or you have problems with a place, please give me feedback. I can't check everything. My clone is in the repair shop right now and won't be back till the next millenium. Cheers, Mirabee
