when the circus leaves town

steve schepens - the uncrowned flemish art ambassador in berlin - was asked by berlinaire to curate a show that investigates the connections between ghent and berlin. two cities with a rich (art) history and a strong actual (pop)-culture. the show, when the circus leaves town, the result of this quest, is showing works by matt mullican, olaf heine, johan tahon, michaël borremans and himself. as trans-disciplinartity is the overall idea behind the berlinaire, the rest of the program blends in art from s.m.a.k., music (e.g the dj's from the famous berlin bar 25) and video. save the dates (april 8th and 9th) in your agenda and visit vooruit in ghent!

under the influence @ phillips de pury

among the 287 lots at the march 8th auction called under the influence @ phillips de pury, we are especially curious for how much the portrait of stephen colbert will be auctioned. for those of you who haven't seen the show, watch steve martin, frank stella, shepard fairey and andres serrano in the colbert nation (part 1 & part 2). the full proceeds of this work will be donated to donorschoose.org

showtime: cindy wright @ pulse new york

aptly titled 'collector's item', the above skulls painting is our top favorite amongst cindy wright's new works. soon to be seen in a solo @ the pulse art fair, presented by mark moore gallery. taking place from march 3-6 in NY, make sure not to miss it!

& stay tuned also for cindy's upcoming solo @ mark moore in LA this may.

rero @ backslash gallery

last week, paris based backslash gallery opened a show by rero called "error 404 (page not found)". the works mix digital culture like 404 - the default error landing page for a website - or the wysiwyg-acronym with a visual language of street culture. this works really well. you might have seen previous work by rero in the urban interventions book by gestalten. if you liked it, make sure to check out the video of the opening & visit the show.

'orgy of the rich': 15 minutes of fame at warhol auction

protesters from a group called arts against cuts (consisting of artists and students protesting the UK government’s plans for massive cuts to public services and the arts in the UK) hijacked the sotheby's contemporary art auction. timing was on the spot: the protest began in parallel with the bidding on warhol's nine multicolored marilyns.

excerpt from london evening standard:

nearly a dozen intruders set off alarms and threw fake £50 notes in the air at sotheby's before unfurling a large banner bearing the words "orgy of the rich".
auctioneer tobias meyer had just proclaimed the warhol piece as lot 36 when the moaning started, stopping proceedings as the 1,000-strong room turned to look at the banner.
a protester calling himself matt said: "it is obscene that the amount of money being spent at this auction could be the difference between having some form of local services which exists in the community and not."
belgian collector mark vanmoerkerke said the auction house took the interruption in its stride. he said: "it's fun to see people stand up for what they believe in. an orgy of the rich? they're not exactly wrong."

the warhol eventually sold for £3.2 million, but watch the reaction of sotheby's staff & public, when the calling price of 2 million was announced, right after the protesters had been evicted from the auction room. point well made, wouldn't u agree?

(see also hyperallergic's coverage of the protest)

showtime: luc tuymans @ bozar

fresh from the chicago contemporary art museum, as well as series of shows all over the states, luc tuymans' retrospective finally comes to his land of origin. the show will be opening this friday @ bozar brussels & it's on the must-see list.

there will be around 75 works in the exhibition, offering a chronological overview of 30 years of creative work of the antwerp-based painter; 30 years during which he became one of the leading international artists. the recurrent theme in tuymans' work is violence, which he approaches from a historical point of view - with images of holocaust, nationalism, european colonial past etc. - evolving into more recent "american series" (see painting of condoleeza rice above). emotionally loaded images, they are nevertheless depicted in a highly depersonalized manner, characteristic for all tuymans' works.

in parallel, tuymans' antwerp gallery, zeno x, presents a solo show of his new works, which we visited 2 weeks ago (see photos on our flickr page). personal favorites: "driver" (portrait of a truck driver without a truck, holding a steering wheel) & "in the end you're just dad" (close-up of a male actor, still image from a colgate commercial).

for more info see article about tuymans in last week's financial times.

art rotterdam & re:rotterdam: opening night

our pictures from the opening of the rotterdam artfair are online!
tinkebell was the outright queen of the fair, pretty in pink and working on "almost 18", totally undisturbed by the crowd flooding the torch stand. more highlights of the fair are on our flickr & you might also want to check trendbeheer's coverage of the event.
re trendbeheer, they had their own presentation on re:rotterdam, with installations of niels post & jeroen jongeleen (influenza).
(re:rotterdam is an initiative of galerie 10, which was showing several of their artists, amongst others alex jacobs & ellemieke schoenmaker, aka v&b)

directors lounge 2011 starts today in berlin...

... & we are participating!

once again this year, the berlinale is drawing a great many filmmakers and cineastes to berlin. in parallel and by now an insiders’ tip, the directors lounge, developed by berlin artists, is hosting for the 7th year in a row its own very special kind of film festival, so make sure to get to meinblau, pfefferberg in berlin mitte by 8pm tonight to see the opening mix of films!

to our great joy, the opening night will also feature 'love is in the air', a happy famous artists' trailer for our new project, entitled 'leadership dating'. we're happy to be a part of it & sad that we can't make it to berlin this time to present our short movie in person.

the dl team has prepared a great program, which will show films daily from 6pm till dawn till sun 20 feb. many national and international artists will be on hand in person to present their piece, amongst others the british composer michael nyman (author of music for the piano as well as for numerous peter greenaway ventures) & guy maddin (canadian filmmaker and juror at this year’s berlinale).

the 'love is in the air' trailer will be available to watch online as of monday, 14 feb (call us romantic ;-)) @ www.worlddictatorsunite.com, so stay tuned! here a small intro:

Happy Famous Artists have identified a space in which dictators of taste, religion, business, fashion, art, etc. meet, chat and seduce each other. But this is not dating as we know it, as theirs are post human needs with superior appetites which we cannot understand. Leadership Dating, an invitation-only website, is the expression of this phenomena.

Three threads of narrative, some more fictitious than others, weave throughout the trailer:
the artists recount initial contact and creation of the dating site; remote interjections from the mysterious arch manipulator who engaged HFA to create the “Leadership Dating” website; and promotional clips and short profile excerpts of the Great and the Good. Do not worry if you are made to feel inferior, an invitation can be yours once you reject the tyranny of equality and embrace your inner dictator. Apply at www.worlddictatorsunite.com

rotterdam art fairs: day 1

today - and the rest of the week - rotterdam is the place to be for art aficionados. this afternoon, re:rotterdam art fair opens its doors in lantarenvenster. re:rotterdam is an initiative from galerie 10 and claims to bring a "reply/ response/ reaction to certain practices within the art". its ambitious statement & a strong list of artists that approach art from a different angle certainly make us curious. you can see there, amongst others, 'spamlish' by niels post from trendbeheer, paintings by v&b, wild beaming by hester scheurwater and installations by marc bijl.
the official opening of art rotterdam fair starts at 6pm. an international selection of galeries show the best what they have to offer. top on our must-see list is torch gallery showing tinkebell's 'almost 18 (for your pleasure)' & the 'art babes' project of daan samson & jeronimus van pelt.

suffolk deluxe electric bicycle by olek and devan harlan

one more via lost at e minor & artcat:
as of fri next week, you can see the suffolk deluxe electric bicycle, a collaborative sculpture between artists agata olek and devan harlan, @ lz project space in east village. makes us think about the first time when we, together with our blood brother geoffrey, saw olek's crocheted bike standing near the new museum & were wondering who the hell made this cool stuff. since then geoffrey has been part of olek's artwork, olek herself has been all over the news & we look forward to meeting her next month!

graphic design: viktor hertz

meet viktor hertz, swedish freelance photographer and graphic designer. just came across his psycho poster on who killed bambi & loved it instantly. you can see an entire series of these cool pictograms-based posters on lost at e minor.

showtime: i promise to love you

on the occasion of the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the caldic collection, kunsthal rotterdam presents a survey exhibition entitled ‘i promise to love you'. a selection of over eighty paintings, photographs, installations and sculptures that have all been purchased over the last ten years, incl. works by ai weiwei, yayoi kusama, james turrell, sam taylor-wood, robert zandvliet and others are being shown. so if u're still in state to absorb more art after the rotterdam art fair, this might as well be a good completion of the day. if not, trendbeheer - present @ the opening night - has pretty much summed up the experience for u :-).

norbert bisky

wassup is a new painting by norbert bisky. rather small (80 x 60 cm) compared to the usual work of this fantastic painter, but once again a sublime piece. we look forward seeing bisky's work (among others) in the alexander ramselaar collection next week on a trip organized by independent collectors.

bgl

bgl are definitely one of the artists we look forward to seeing @ volta ny next month. this canadian art collective - yes, canadian :=) - claims to create "cheeky, critical and explosive works". check their portfolio with installations, sculptures & videos and you can only agree with this. the work above is from 2005 and is called "jouet pour adulte".  they have been working for over 10 years & are represented by the edgy quebecois gallery parisian laundry.
