Vermont Studio Center Fellowship Applications Due June 15th!

(ALL) Vermont Studio Center Fellowships—Here are some of the great things the Vermont Studio Center is offering to artists of all kinds:

Sixteen fellowships for a 4-week residency are open to all artists and writers based on merit, as represented in the portfolio or manuscript.

Anderson/Frankel Fellowship for Chicago area/SAIC alumni. One fellowship sponsored by the Marshall Frankel Foundation and Davis Anderson, this award is open to all Chicago-area artists, including faculty and alumni of the Art Institute of Chicago, for one 4-week VSC residency.

Civil Society Institute Fellowship award for a 4-week residency open to an east coast minority artist with demonstrable financial need; preference will be given to artists from New Haven, Jersey City, and Baltimore. The $25 application fee is waived for eligible CSI applicants. Award includes a $500 travel stipend.

Cave Canem Fellowship. This annual fellowship provides one 4-week residency to a poet who is a Cave Canem fellow. Home for the many voices of African American poetry, Cave Canem is committed to cultivating the artistic and professional growth of African American poets.

The Pollock-Krasner Foundation/VSC Fellowship Program for visual artists of outstanding talent will support two 4-week residencies for domestic artists.

Henry David Thoreau Fellowship—This fellowship supports a poet whose work is a living extension of the literary tradition embodied in the work of Henry David Thoreau, for a 4-week residency.

Zoland Translation Fellowship—Offered in conjunction with Zoland Poetry, this 4-week residency fellowship is open to translators. Applicants should submit 3 copies of the original poems/translations, along with a description of English-language rights, author bio, and translator CV.

(MEDIA ARTISTS) Finishing Fund Grants—FINISHING FUNDS provides media and new media artists with grants up to $2,500 to help complete diverse and innovative moving-image and sonic art projects. Eligible forms include single or multiple channel film and video, computer based moving-imagery and sound works, installations and performances, interactive works and works for new technologies, DVD, multimedia and the Web. We also support new media and interactive performance. Applicants must be residents of New York State; undergraduate students are not eligible. Announcement is made in early June. (PHOTOGRAPHERS & ARTISTS) OSU Post-MFA Fellowships—The Department of Art at Ohio State University is offering 2 Post-MFA Fellowships in 2011-12. One fellowship will be focused in Photography. Another fellowship is available and open to artists working in all mediums. These fellowships include an $18,000 stipend to support the individual while in residence at OSU. Additional remuneration is possible through adjunct teaching assignments, based on program need. 24-hour access to studio space, opportunities to collaborate with other centers, and borrowing privileges from the campus libraries. (WRITERS) The ArtsEdge Residency Project—now accepting applications for the ARTSEDGE RESIDENCY PROJECT, a joint venture of the Kelly Writers House and Penn’s Facilities and Real Estate Services: http://writing.upenn.edu/wh/involved/awards/artsedge/. DEADLINE: April 29, 2011.

The ARTSEDGE PROJECT offers a one year residency for an emerging writer. The residency includes a subsidized apartment at 40th and Chestnut, (writer pays less than half the rent), studio/writing space in the AIR Space artistic nexus, and close affiliation with Penn’s writing communities.

During the course of the residency, the ArtsEdge writer will be encouraged to develop at least one project at the Writers House. (ALL) Vermont Studio Center—Founded by artists in 1984, the Vermont Studio Center is the largest international artists' and writers' Residency Program in the United States, hosting 50 visual artists and writers each month from across the country and around the world. The Studio Center provides 4-12 week studio residencies on an historic 30-building campus along the Gihon River in Johnson, Vermont, a village in the heart of the northern Green Mountains.

Vermont Studio Center awards a number of fellowships for 8-week residencies to international residents from specific countries through the generous support of the Freeman Foundation, the Shelley and Donald Rubin Foundation and the Robert Sterling Clark Foundation. Each residency award comes with round-trip air travel, travelers health insurance, an exhibition in the Red Mill Gallery, and other benefits depending on the award. New Residencies, Fellowships for Artists, Writers, Musicians and More!

Dear Readers,

I am still crazy busy AND getting married in less than two weeks (!), then I am off on a honeymoon until September 18th. I'll try posting one more time before I leave but if I can't, I'll post as soon as I can when I return! Anyway, below are a few new opportunities coming up. Also, thanks to a Mira's List fan, I just learned that that once the 2011 round of residencies are finished at the Hawthorne Castle Residency in Scotland (see my most recent post), the castle will be shutting down for repairs and the director isn't sure he will re-open the place for residencies. They are currently not accepting anymore applications. Too bad. It looked like a beautiful place.

Well...cheers for now...and if you feel like buying me a pivo (that's beer in Czech) for my honeymoon in Prague, go right ahead! I told all our wedding guests not to buy presents, just to donate to my pivo cause. And they did! We got our plane tickets so we are pretty happy. If there are any ML fans out there in Prague, let me know. Maybe we can stop by your studio or meet for a beer!

(PERFORMING ARTISTS) The Cultural Exchange Fund (CEF): CULTURAL EXCHANGE FUND: is a travel subsidy program supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to assist U.S. based presenters in building partnerships and collaborations with international touring artists, companies and their collaborators and in seeing the work of artists from around the world in its cultural context. Arts Presenters will award travel subsidies to individual presenters, presenting organizations and to groups of presenters traveling to see the work of artists, companies and/or to develop and advance projects with international artists and their collaborators. (ALL) Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts Residencies: The Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts in Nebraska City, NE offers 2- to 8-week residencies year-round for writers, visual artists, and music composers. Housing, studio space, $100/week stipend are provided. Visual artists work in one of three studios, two of which are approximately 425 square feet and one that is 258 square feet.

Approximately 50 residencies are awarded per year. Two deadlines each year: postmarked March 1 for the following July through December 15; postmarked September 1 for the following January through June 15. (ARTISTS) Homesession Residency in Barcelona, Spain: Homesession residency is a program for emerging visual artists in Barcelona, Spain. Its major singularity lies in the development of the artistic work in the context of a living place. Homesession aims at exploring new creation territories and being an open link toward the international emerging creation.

With the specificity that can give a private living place, the homesession residency investigate the dynamic links between the eye, the work, the environment and the artist. It can lead to an ephemeral work, a disposable intervention, an ordinary situation, a chaotic event, a documentation or an ambitious interface. For more info, go to: homesession.org

(ALL) New Light Residencies: Visual artists, sculptors, dancers, musicians, poets and writers

have all spent time creating at New Light Guest House. The house, which once was home to local dairy workers, has been restored with modern amenities. There are two bedrooms, one bath, and a comfortable living room, complete with a separate kitchen/dining room. New Light Guest House accepts visitors by the month or week, but is willing to arrange a residency that fits the artist's schedule. This space was conceived for serious artists to find the peace and quiet, and the inspiration, to create great works. It is in this spirit that a fee of $250 per month is suggested, although New Light Studio does not wish for monetary concerns to prevent a visit. (MUSICIANS, SONGWRITERS & WRITERS) ISLAND Residency for Emerging Artists: ISLAND (the Institute for Sustainable Living, Art & Natural Design) is a new residency program in Michigan for emerging musicians, songwriters and writers at any stage of their careers. The deadline for their second round of residencies, which runs from November 2010 to April 2011 is September 15th. Writers and musicians are encouraged to apply to spend between two to four weeks in a semi-secluded log home near East Jordan, MI. COMBAT PAPER: A DIFFERENT KIND OF RESIDENCY

COMBAT PAPER: From Uniform to Pulp/Battlefield to Workshop/Warrior to Artist—As you know, I tend to list mostly residencies that are subsidized. However, I'd like to tell you about a very special residency (and workshop program) in Burlington, Vermont that, in my humble opinion, is definitely worth paying for. It's called Combat Paper: http://www.combatpaper.org/index.html.

From Combat Paper's website: "The story of the soldier, the Marine, the men and the women and the journeys within the military service in a time of war is the basis for this project. The goal is to utilize art as a means to help veterans reconcile their personal experiences as well as broaden the traditional narrative surrounding service, honor and the military culture. Through papermaking workshops veterans use their uniforms worn in combat to create cathartic works of art. The uniforms are cut up, beat and formed into sheets of paper. Veterans use the transformative process of papermaking to reclaim their uniform as art and begin to embrace their experiences as a soldier in war.

The Combat Paper Project is based out of Green Door Studio in Burlington, VT and has traveled throughout the United States. This project is made possible by a multifaceted collaboration between artists, art collectors, academic institutions and combat veterans. Through ongoing participation in the papermaking process, combat papermakers are attempting to progress from creating works specific to their military experiences to expressing a broader vision on militarism and society. The work reflects both the anger of the past and hope for the future. Through this collaboration between civilians and veterans, a much-needed conversation is generated regarding our responsibilities to the returned veteran and an understanding of the dehumanizing effects of warfare.

Combat Paper Residencies
From time to time, combat paper artists spend a prolonged period of time in the paper studio, working on a specific project, honing their papermaking or book art skills. Unpaid residencies are available for paper artists on an occasional basis. Artists are expected to pay for their own materials as well as their food and lodging while in residence. Residencies are self designed by the artist. Studio space and equipment are available for use. Some want to improve their skills at sheet formation for books, artwork or other personal projects. Some wish to hone their binding and bookmaking skills. Others want to explore specialty pulps and fibers used in the papermaking process. Some are accomplished artists, others are novices, willing to devote time and energy learning their craft. ALL DISCIPLINES: Vermont Studio Center Residency
The Vermont Studio Center offers: * 2- to 12-week studio residencies for 50 artists and writers per month (24 painters/ mixed-media, 12 sculptors/mixed-media, 2 printmakers, 2 photographers, and 12 writers), * Private studio space appropriate to the medium (open 24 hours a day), * Simple, private rooms and excellent food, * Opportunity for focused, independent work, * A large and diverse creative community, * Opportunities to share work: open studio evenings, slide presentations, and readings. For non-U.S. artists: International applicants are eligible to receive travel stipends through the "UNESCO-Aschberg Bursaries for Artists Programme."
