(ARTISTS) Residency & Stipend at the Bemis Center—

Few programs exist either on the national or international level where the sole mission is to support the creativity of artists. From the beginning, the art-making process has been the highest priority at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts in Omaha Nebraska, where both the atmosphere and environment offer ideal situations for creative growth and experimentation. Artists from around the world come to the Bemis Center to work in this supportive community and confront new challenges. The Bemis Center provides Artists-in-Residence with the gift of time, space and support.

TIME 3 months of uninterrupted, self-directed work time.

SPACE The Bemis Center is housed in two urban warehouses totaling 110,000 square feet in Omaha, NE. Each artist is provided with a generously sized live/work studio with a private bathroom and 24 hour access to facilities including a wood shop, installation spaces, dark room and a large sculpture fabrication facility.

SUPPORT each resident receives a $750 monthly stipend.

(ARTISTS & WRITERS) Can Serrat Stipends for Visual Artists, Spain—Can Serrat Residencies—Deadline: October 31st, 2011

Each year, Can Serrat offers a limited number of Support Stipends to visual artists and writers. The stipends cover 40% of the total cost (food, lodging and workspace) of stays lasting from 30-90 days(the stipend cannot be combined with discounts mentioned in the pricelist).

Each recipient may choose a 30-90 day time slot within a year from the original notification (assuming space is available at that time).

Deadline for Applications

Applications are accepted at the same time as the full-stipend calls. We accept materials from Visual Artists during April 1-30, and from October 1-31st. Applicants for the full stipend are automatically considered for a partial stipend. Applications are accepted solely by email.

(ARTISTS) The European Pépinières for Young Artists Residency—is currently calling for proposals within two frameworks: the map 2011-2012 programme and the M4m programme.

The map 2011-2012 programme is a extension of the map programme, which has been initiated by the Pépinières européennes pour jeunes artistes. In order to address the different movements of the young generation of artists, this program offers a panel of artists mobility concepts led by partner places. It is open to artists between 18 and 35 years old, living in one of the program’s member countries:

New Residencies, Fellowships for Artists, Writers, Musicians and More!

Dear Readers,

I am still crazy busy AND getting married in less than two weeks (!), then I am off on a honeymoon until September 18th. I'll try posting one more time before I leave but if I can't, I'll post as soon as I can when I return! Anyway, below are a few new opportunities coming up. Also, thanks to a Mira's List fan, I just learned that that once the 2011 round of residencies are finished at the Hawthorne Castle Residency in Scotland (see my most recent post), the castle will be shutting down for repairs and the director isn't sure he will re-open the place for residencies. They are currently not accepting anymore applications. Too bad. It looked like a beautiful place.

Well...cheers for now...and if you feel like buying me a pivo (that's beer in Czech) for my honeymoon in Prague, go right ahead! I told all our wedding guests not to buy presents, just to donate to my pivo cause. And they did! We got our plane tickets so we are pretty happy. (PERFORMING ARTISTS) The Cultural Exchange Fund (CEF): CULTURAL EXCHANGE FUND: is a travel subsidy program supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to assist U.S. based presenters in building partnerships and collaborations with international touring artists, companies and their collaborators and in seeing the work of artists from around the world in its cultural context. Arts Presenters will award travel subsidies to individual presenters, presenting organizations and to groups of presenters traveling to see the work of artists, companies and/or to develop and advance projects with international artists and their collaborators. (ALL) Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts Residencies: The Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts in Nebraska City, NE offers 2- to 8-week residencies year-round for writers, visual artists, and music composers. Housing, studio space, $100/week stipend are provided. Visual artists work in one of three studios, two of which are approximately 425 square feet and one that is 258 square feet.

Approximately 50 residencies are awarded per year. Its major singularity lies in the development of the artistic work in the context of a living place. Homesession aims at exploring new creation territories and being an open link toward the international emerging creation.

With the specificity that can give a private living place, the homesession residency investigate the dynamic links between the eye, the work, the environment and the artist. (ALL) New Light Residencies: Visual artists, sculptors, dancers, musicians, poets and writers

have all spent time creating at New Light Guest House. The house, which once was home to local dairy workers, has been restored with modern amenities. There are two bedrooms, one bath, and a comfortable living room, complete with a separate kitchen/dining room. New Light Guest House accepts visitors by the month or week, but is willing to arrange a residency that fits the artist's schedule. This space was conceived for serious artists to find the peace and quiet, and the inspiration, to create great works. It is in this spirit that a fee of $250 per month is suggested, although New Light Studio does not wish for monetary concerns to prevent a visit. (MUSICIANS, SONGWRITERS & WRITERS) ISLAND Residency for Emerging Artists: ISLAND (the Institute for Sustainable Living, Art & Natural Design) is a new residency program in Michigan for emerging musicians, songwriters and writers at any stage of their careers. The deadline for their second round of residencies, which runs from November 2010 to April 2011 is September 15th. (FILMMAKERS) San Francisco Film Society / Kenneth Rainin Foundation Filmmaking Grants Program (Fall, 2011) – Provides funding for narrative feature films made in the San Francisco Bay Area that, through plot, character, theme, or setting, significantly explore human and civil rights, anti-discrimination, gender and sexual identity, and other urgent social justice issues of our time. Grants support screenwriting and script development, preproduction, and post-production expenses. In addition to a cash grant, recipients will receive a range of benefits through the society’s filmmaker services programs. Applicants must be in a key creative role (screenwriter, producer, or director), be at least 18 years old, have a strong connection to the San Francisco Bay Area, and be SFFS members at the Filmmaker Pro level or above (membership is $90/year and can be purchased at time of application). (LANDSCAPE ARTISTS/DESIGNERS) CDAN Research Grants: Think Landscape 2010: Fundación Beulas, through the CDAN, is launching in 2010 its first research grants, for the purpose of promoting studies of the theoretical aspects of landscape, encouraging drafting general projects that may pave the way for further studies. The research projects that may be awarded this grant will address the generic theme of landscape, conceived in all its facets: artistic, aesthetic, historical, geographical, patrimonial, economical, territorial, biological, etc.

The grant is intended for individual researchers, from the European Union and Latin American countries, who demonstrate their experience, such as doctoral professors, though it is not necessary that they be attached to a university. ARTISTS RESIDENCIES IN ITALY & FRANCE, TRAVEL GRANTS AND MORE!

Just so you know, I'll be gone from around the 10th to the 18th so no posts during that time. For now, I'd like to tell you about some upcoming deadlines for grants and residencies. The first is a relatively new one, which opened in the south of Italy in 2008. Unfortunately, there aren't any stipends available yet, but they are working on that with various foundations. The cost to stay there isn't bad though and I recommend checking it out. I used to live in Italy years ago and this is one of the most beautiful places on earth. (ALL) RESIDENCY IN SOUTHERN ITALY: Applications are now open for summer residencies at Palazzo Rinaldi, a historical property dating back to 1822 located in the charming hilltop village of Noepoli, in the Pollino National Park (south of Italy). The Palazzo provides artists of all disciplines with a unique and inspiring retreat away from the stresses and distractions of urban living. Resident artists are provided with elegant private accommodation, 24 hour access to in-house studios, free wi-fi Internet and home-made full traditional breakfast daily. (ARTISTS) RESIDENCY AT FLUX FACTORY IN NEW YORK: Five spots are available in Flux Factory's residency program in Queens, NY, beginning January 1st, 2010. Flux Factory offers housing, studio space, studio visits by curators, exhibition opportunities and more. (COMPOSERS & SOUND ARTISTS) VAN LIER FELLOWSHIP: The purpose of this fellowship is to provide financial support for young composers in the early stages of their careers, working in any style of music or sound art. The fellowship is open to African-American and Latino composers 32 years of age or younger. The applicant must be a full-time resident of New York City (any borough) and show financial need. The applicant must not be enrolled in a degree-granting program at the time of application (i.e., no students).

The one-year fellowship award is $8,500. Funds can be used for any purpose, including the creation of new work, the purchasing of music/tech equipment, travel, or research and development. An additional $1,500 will be allotted to each fellow to design and execute an educational outreach program to benefit students and/or youth groups. This educational proposal is not part of the original application; those who win a fellowship will design the proposal after the award is conferred. (ALL) RESIDENCY/FELLOWSHIP AT SPIRO ARTS, UTAH: Open to all artists at all stages of development from all over the world. Fellows receive studio space, housing and a $600 stipend. (ALL) CAMARGO FOUNDATION RESIDENCY IN FRANCE: The Camargo Foundation, located in Cassis, France, is an interdisciplinary center for scholars and artists of all disciplines pursuing creative projects. The Foundation provides furnished apartments, a reference library, a music/conference room, artist studio with darkroom, composer's studio, and a studio for either artist or composer. Residencies are one semester long. The Camargo Fellowship is a residential grant (they used to give money as well, although I think they only offer housing and studio space now, plus a $1500 stipend.) Deadline is January 12, 2010.

(ALL) ARTSLINK TRAVEL GRANTS: CEC ArtsLink is dedicated to creating cultural exchanges between artists of all disciplines in the United States and artists in Central and Eastern Europe, Russia, Central Asia and the Caucasus. Several kinds of opportunities are available from CEC, for both artists and arts managers in the U.S. and the countries listed above. The following announcement is for U.S. artists but please check the website for grants and residencies for non-US citizens.

ArtsLink Projects provides support to US artists, curators, presenters and arts organizations undertaking projects in Central Europe, Russia, Central Asia and the Caucasus. Applicants must be working with an artist or organization in that region and projects should be designed to benefit participants and audiences in both the US and the host country.

Maximum award this year will be $10,000. ArtsLink has a cycle of alternate year deadlines according to discipline. In 2010, applications will be accepted from individual artists, curators and non-profit arts organizations working in dance, music, literature and theater. In 2011, applications will be accepted from individual artists, presenters and non-profit arts organizations working in visual and media arts. They are intended for those who are primed for national and international recognition and who are ready for top conducting posts. Deadline is January 15th, 2010. (ARTISTS) The SAM Prize for Contemporary Art
The SAM Prize for Contemporary Art, organized by SAM Art Projects, is a 20, 000 euros grant competition open to all artists over the age of 25, who have been resident in France for at least 2 years, and who have a signed contract with a gallery. The aim of the prize is to allow the selected artist to carry out a project which he/she will conduct in an emerging country in the Southern hemisphere, and exhibit in France in the following year. (PERFORMING ARTS) Cultural Exchange Travel Grants
Also recently posted at the Foundation Center: Grants of up to $10,000 will be awarded to U.S.-based individual presenters and groups traveling to see the work of artists or companies abroad, and/or to develop partnerships with them. Deadline: November 16, 2009.

(ARTISTS) The Abraaj Capital $1 million dollar Art Prize
The Abraaj Capital Art Prize Competition offers contemporary artists from the Middle East, North African and South Asia the opportunity to apply for this prestigious award. The Dubai-based private equity firm, Abraaj Capital developed the US 1 million dollar prize in 2008 with Art Dubai and since then has awarded this prize twice, each time to three sets of winners. The award is granted on the merit of a proposal of a yet-to-be realized project and is the world's most generous art award. The works of the winners are unveiled in March at Art Dubai, Asia's premier art fair. INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL GRANTS AND MORE!

***Insider's Tip: for this first grant, the LIAP grant for international travel: It will help your application immensely if you propose to collaborate somehow with local artists OR somehow involve a community in the country you want to travel to. Collaborative involvement can mean many things, from offering some workshops or professional presentations to local residents, to collaborating on an installation with other artists in the area, etc. Another little tidbit: although preference is given to people who haven't traveled that much as well as artists from Kansas City and the midwest, if your project is innovative, somehow involves the local community, and isn't in a developed country, you have a much better chance to get a grant (but they have to like your work too!).

(VISUAL ARTISTS) Lighton International Artists Exchange Grant
This grant, which offers up to $5,000 for international travel, is sponsered by the Kansas City Artists Coalition. The Lighton International Artists Exchange Program works to make the world a smaller place by giving artists of different cultures the opportunity to work together in the hope that lasting friendship and understanding will develop. The program provides support for visual artists and arts professionals to travel to international residencies and artist communities and for foreign visual artists to travel to and work in the United States. The program seeks applications from dedicated American artists who create work of exceptional quality and whose work and career is at a level to benefit from international exchange with peers. The program is especially interested in funding artists who have not yet worked in a foreign country and in funding travel and residencies to countries that are less westernized. International artists who want to apply for funding for a Kansas City residency may submit inquiries to JanetSimpson@ KansasCityArtistsCoalition.org. The next deadline for travel grants is August 15, (not a postmark deadline). Artists should apply 6-12 months prior to intended travel dates. Notification will be mailed two months after deadlines. The L.I.A.P also offers Money for Artists Promotion grants to assist artists in promoting and marketing their artwork. The program is especially interested in funding artists whose application displays innovative and creative approaches to artist promotion. Artists must be members of the Kansas City Artists Coalition. The maximum m.a.p. grant is $1,000. Applications will be accepted and reviewed on an ongoing basis. Artists should apply 2-6 months prior to intended project dates (if applicable).

(ALL DISCIPLINES) European Cultural Foundation Grant
This grant supports outstanding artistic projects which show vision in illuminating the issues of diversity in Europe. Average grant: Euro 30 000 - Euro 60 000. Artists and organizations working in any artistic discipline, and residing/based in Europe are eligible (i.e. European Union and the neighboring regions) as well as individual artists who have a demonstrable track record in their chosen discipline (at least 5 years experience). ECF is looking for: • Projects that reflect on European developments in an innovative way. We need artists to comment on, research, question, imagine and fantasize about what is happening in European societies: in the cities, among and within communities, across borders. • Projects that reveal an innovative creation process and a visible end product. We are looking for artistic visions, ideas, answers, works on how Europe should/could relate to its diversities. • Projects that have a legacy for the future. This means that one-off events are unlikely to be supported unless they have clear impact and are sustainable within the context. (MUSICIANS) New Technology Grant
Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation/New Technology Funding Program: Grants of up to $75,000 each will be awarded to jazz musicians and nonprofits using technology to develop audience, communications, marketing, distribution channels, and networking for jazz performance. Planning and implementation grants available. Applicants must be jazz artists who are citizens or permanent residents of the U.S., or be a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization (or an organizations with eligible fiscal sponsor) with a history of programming jazz or providing services to jazz artists or jazz organizations.
