HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Just wanted to let you all know that I will be out of town and offline until Friday, December 18th. I'll be posting a new interview shortly after that so stay tuned! Also, if any of you are planning to buy holiday gifts from Amazon this month, think about doing your Amazon search through my website so that I can get a teeny, tiny percentage of the sale. Two cents here, twenty cents there! All you have to do is scroll down on the right hand side bar to where it says "Search for Grant Books" and type in what you are looking for. It doesn't even have to be grant books. Also, at the bottom of this page is a large selection of not only books related to my blog (grants, residencies, etc.) but also, many of my own children's books). Thanks!

Have a great week....see you when I get back.

HOW TO GET PUBLISHED: SOME SUGGESTED SITES

Greetings all,

Well, it looks like my email is up and running again. Sorry about the confusion. Anyway, today I wanted to remind you to make sure to check my sidebar once and a while because I periodically upload new links and resources. I have also finally separated my blogrolls into two lists: blogs that relate to Mira's List subjects (and other issues, such as how to find an agent, how to write a great query letter, etc) and blogs that are my personal and quirky favorites (okay, I like food, I like neuroscience and I have a special fondness for the strange marriage of art and science, particularly science during the Age of Discovery. I also am fond of baby animals, graphic novels and 19th century polar exploration. Well. I could add to the list but I won't bore you any more than I already have.

One another note, and this one is for writers—Lately I have been getting a lot of personal mail asking me about the publishing world. Now, while I do know a bit about that elusive and mercurial world, I think there are many more bloggers out there who are really experts in this field. Here are a few of my favorite sites for you writers out there who have written me asking about how to get an agent, how to write a query letter, etc. Victoria Mixon, who writes eloquently and amusingly about a variety of publishing and writing issues: http://victoriamixon.com/. I love Victoria and suggest you visit her site. Another blogger I just adore uses the name Moon Rat and you can find her at http://editorialass.blogspot.com. She is an editor at some unnamed publishing house and, for my money, offers the best advice for both emerging and published authors. She's hilarious, witty, ironic and will answer all your burning questions about the publishing industry. I am all about Moon Rat.

If you want to write a kick-ass query to an agent, then there is no one better than Wendy Burt-Thomas at askwendy.wordpress.com. She is the author of the The Writers Digest Guide To Query Letters which I will add (right now!) to my bookstore at the bottom of this blog. Another great site is literary agent, Nathan Bransford's blog: http://blog.nathanbransford.com. Nathan is an agent for Curtis Brown so he really knows what he is talking about. I find his posts extremely insightful. And knowing what I know about the biz and how hard most agents work at getting writers deals (mine certainly deserves a Purple Heart), it is heartwarming to know that there are some literary agents out there willing to take time out from their busy schedules to help emerging writers understand how to get published.

Anyway, there are so many great sites in the blogsphere that deal with publishing and breaking into the literary market that I am just leaving it all up to them. Come here for your weekly dose of Mira's List but go to these experts on the business of getting your great poems, stories and novels out into the world.

And speaking of publishing, please check out the books at the bottom of this blog. And if you have a hankering to buy any holiday gifts from Amazon in the next few weeks, please do your book search from my site, on the right sidebar where it says "Search for Grant Books!" because I might earn a couple pennies that way!

More to come in the next few days....and we have some great interviews lined up for you for December and maybe this month too. Now get off the computer and do your art.
Cheers,
Mira

COMING SOON

Hi everyone. Just a quick note to say that I have not abandoned you but rather, I have been quite a busy bee, doing a couple interviews for other blogs, preparing some Q and A's for this one (with grant funders, artists and writers whose lives have been changed by residencies, etc.) and of course, searching for great opportunities for all.

I have more things for you to see....I'll get to them as soon as I can. In the meantime, keep working hard and don't forget all those fall deadlines!
Best Wishes,
Mira

p.s. A few of you have written to ask when my book is coming out and where you can see my work (art and writing) on the web. My book, The Memory Palace, is due out sometime late 2010 or early 2011 from Free Press (Simon & Schuster). I'll be starting a blog for it and my editorial/publishing process soon and when my official website goes up, you'll be the first to know! And don't forget to check out my bookstore at the bottom of this blog. Anything you buy from this site, even not grant related books, will help keep this blog going!

BOOKS BY MIRA!

Hi again. Just so you know, I uploaded a bunch of my books on different cultures for you to purchase, if you so desire (see bottom of page). Each book in the Stencil Book Series contains a set of stencils and info on each country or culture, along with history, lifeways, art, ritual information, myths and folklore. Great for the classroom or for museum workshops, if any of you are teachers out there. I originally wrote and developed the book series for children, grades three and up, but many artists (and others) like the books just for the designs (like Dover books only with much more information). There's also a four book Early Reader series for young children, with photos and text about Native American cultures. Every book you buy from my site helps to support Mira's List a tiny bit more! So scroll down to the bottom of the blog and you will find not only grant and arts books but now you'll find some books by me! Thanks.
Mira

BOOKS, BOOKS, AND BOOKS!

Okay. Confession: I spent the day getting over a cold (no, it isn't Swine Flu) and not posting about residencies. I decided instead to post some links to books for those of you who want more indepth information on grantwriting and career tips in the arts. So, Gentle Readers, if you will kindly do one of two things (or both!): scroll down to the very bottom of this blog to see the books I have posted so far and/or go to the side bar and scroll down to the little section that says "search for grant books." This is yet another way that you can not only edify yourself but also earn a few pennies for Mira's List. For every book you buy from me, I get a wee percentage. Not only would you be learning something new but you would be helping me keep this blog going. If you are to purchase only one book this year, might I suggest this one: Guide to Getting Arts Grants by Ellen Liberatori. You'll find it in the bookstore at the bottom of my blog. Liberatori's book is helpful for both individuals and non-profit organizations.

Coming soon....residencies, grants, fellowships, quirky notes and best of all, Mira's Swagville Store! Yes, you heard me. You will soon be able to purchase a Mira's List T-Shirt and other cool items to help this little project of mine chug along. I'll let you know when the store is up. In the meantime, I'm not around this weekend but I'll post early next week, have no fear.

Have a beauteous autumnal weekend. Make art, write a poem, cook someone a fantastic meal and take a long, long glorious walk.
Cheers,
Mira

A PERSONAL NOTE

Greetings...just a quick note to say that I have temporarily removed my book recommendations from the sidebar because it seems, for some reason, that Amazon aliens have taken over my list and replaced the book covers with flashing generic ads without telling me! Anyway, I'll figure out what happened and get them back up there sooner or later. Sorry to have inadvertently subjected you to flashiness. I cannot abide by flashiness. Also, one more thing---don't forget to check my sidebar on the right for new residencies that I don't list in postings. You can click on the photos and be taken directly to the website. As usual, I try to only list places that are FREE and, when possible, open to international artists. Oh...I am also currently looking for the following grants/opportunities, so if you have found something that is quite wonderful and wish to share the opportunity with me and others, please place a comment below with the information. Here's my list:
1. grants/fellowships for travel funding to international residencies.
2. grants for graphic novel/memoirists.
3. substantial grants/fellowships for musicians/composers/sound artists.
4. scholarships for artists, writers, etc. to attend MFA programs, especially low-residency ones.

I do have info on the above, however, I cannot possibly know about everything so if you have come across something great, pass it on. Thanks! Mira

RANDOM THOUGHTS

It's late and I'm off to bed but I had a couple random thoughts....first, I wanted to remind you all that there is only one more day left to fill out my fun two second poll on the right hand sidebar. More polls to come, by the way... I also wanted to thank a couple people who recently sent donations. One artist sent donations twice in the last couple months! Thank you Amy! Every little bit counts, even those five to fifteen dollar donations. Another loyal fan sent me an incredible photograph (thank you Simen.) And I especially want to express my gratitude to artist, curator and blogger Catherine Tedford (AKA Sticker Kitty) who bleeps me announcements all the time and who tells everyone in the world about my blog. Thank you, thank you, thank you. You're the best! And speaking of announcements, you should be aware that a lot of residencies have September 15th deadlines. I will post more of them soon, but don't forget to check out the links on the lower right for residencies (resartis.org, transartists.org, artistcommunities.org, etc.). They have hundreds of residencies just waiting to be discovered by you. And if you prefer browsing through a book that gives excellent descriptions of residencies all over the world, go to the lower right sidebar and click on the blue book: Artists Communities: A Directory of Residencies that Offer Time and Space for Creativity (the second book listed). Most if not all of the places inside the book are still active residencies. Sometimes it's nice to do research the old fashioned way, you know? Buy the book from me and I get a wee percentage! Have a great weekend...more wonderous things to come....Mira
