(ALL) Fogo Island Arts Corporation Residency Program 2012-2013—The Fogo Island Arts Corporation is a new contemporary art venue on the east coast of Canada. The Arts Corporation runs two distinct yet complementary programs, the Residency program and the Production program. Both programs encourage dialogue between visiting artists and local people to share experiences and perceptions.

The Fogo Island Arts Corporation's mission to bring together local communities and the international art scene is reflected in the accommodations and work space provided to Residency Program participants. Striking new studios are being built at locations across the island. Living spaces are provided in refurbished traditional homes located in nearby communities on the island.

Visual artists, curators, writers and filmmakers can apply for residencies on Fogo Island in 2012 – 2013. Residencies are from 3 to 6 months. Visiting professionals are provided with a studio (work space) and a house to live in. (MEDIA ARTS/SOUND ARTISTS/SCULPTORS) Nodar Artist Residency ProgramBinaural is a Portuguese non-profit Cultural Organization founded in 2004 with the aim of promoting the exploration and research in sound / visual and new media arts, focusing on the crossing of media and languages and on the articulation between the artistic production and the surrounding context, particularly through its activities in the rural space of Nodar.

Rural Architechtures: The 2012 Nodar Artist Residency Program will specifically explore the interactions between landscape, architecture and sound in the rural context of the Gralheira Mountains, municipality of São Pedro do Sul.

(NATIVE AMERICAN ARTISTS) First Peoples Fund Invites Applications for Artist in Business Leadership Program—The First Peoples Fund’s Artist in Business Leadership Program is designed to help entrepreneurial Native American artists develop their marketing and business skills and build self-sustaining, arts-based businesses.

This one-year, self-directed program provides a working capital grant of up to $5,000 to support work on a marketing plan/strategy or business goal as defined by the artist applicant. Additional program benefits include technical assistance, a professional network of peers, and travel expenses to FPF’s professional development workshops. The fellowship places emphasis on new works to stimulate creativity and a renewal of energy in Native art expression.

Applicants must be members of a Northern Great Plains tribe located in South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Minnesota, Nebraska, the Eastern Plateau region of Idaho, Oregon, or Washington; a tribe from the Great Lakes region of Minnesota, Michigan, or Wisconsin; a tribe belonging to the U.S. Eastern Seaboard states; or a Hawaiian or Alaska Native. (NEW MEDIA) New Arts in Media GrantThe National Endowment for the Arts is accepting applications for their new Arts in Media category open to mobile technology, digital games, and other platforms. Grants are available to support the development, production, and national distribution of innovative media projects about the arts and media projects that can be considered works of art. Grants generally will range from $10,000 to $200,000, based on the platform and the complexity and scope of the project. (PHOTOGRAPHERS) Vision Quest ResidencyVision Quest Photo Workshops announces a new yearly grant of a one-week photographic artist’s residency. This grant provides mid-career fine-art photographers a retreat-like experience to work on their art, reflect on their artistic direction, make new photographs, plan new career paths, or to simply have time away from work/family/life pressure and stress. Photographers can use this time to move their art or career forward or to reflect on where they are at and where they are headed.

The artist will stay in a very private retreat in the woods along the banks of a pristine sand-bottom river, located near Grantsburg, Wisconsin (about an hour drive from the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul). The residency will include a private consultation, in person or via phone, with Vision Quest Photo Workshops founder and director Douglas Beasley before the week begins and after its conclusion. (ALL) Seaside, Florida Residencies: Escape to Create offers two four-week sessions are offered every January and February to artists working in the literary arts, musical composition, scholarship, visual and interdisciplinary arts. 2011 residency sessions are: January 3 - 30 or January 31 - February 27. Artists live and work in private cottages or apartments that have been generously donated in support of their creative work. Travel costs are the responsibility to the artist. Artists receive a $100 weekly stipend and are provided a weekly group dinner in a home environment. Artists are required to contribute community service such as a reading, a performance, or a lecture. School visitations are also encouraged. Deadline June 15, 2010.

(ALL) Caldera Residencies in Portland, OR: Each winter, National and International visual artists, writers, dancers, choreographers, musicians, composers, interdisciplinary artists, collaborators, performance artists, media and design artists, architects, scientists and engineers apply to come to caldera for month-long residencies. Each accepted resident is given the time, space and solitude to devote themselves to their work in a private creek-side cottage with additional rehearsal and studio space nearby. Since caldera's residencies are designed to support the creative process, we don't require residents to produce a specific product. Deadline June 15, 2010.

(ALL) A Studio in the Woods Residencies: Visual, musician/composing, performance, literary, new media, and interdisciplinary artists. URGENT DEADLINES FOR FELLOWSHIPS, RESIDENCIES AND MORE!

(PRINTMAKERS) St. Michael's Printshop Residency in Newfoundland: Each year St. Michael's Printshop invites applications from international, national and provincial artists who wish to come and work at the Printshop for a one-month period. A total of six residencies are offered during the year. The one-month residency must be completed during the period of April 1st in the year in which it is awarded and March 31st of the following year. During the residency, the artist will be asked to give a workshop for the membership of the Printshop. Up to $1500 in funding for each artist plus 24-hour access to all facilities. (ALL) Radcliffe Fellowships: Fellowships for creative artists and scholars in the humanities. Stipends are funded up to $65,000 for one year with additional funds for project expenses. Some support for relocation expenses is provided where relevant. If so directed, Radcliffe will pay the stipend to the fellow's home institution. Fellows receive office or studio space and access to libraries and other resources of Harvard University during the fellowship year, which extends from early September 2010 through June 30, 2011. Visual artists and film, video, sound, and new media artists may apply to come for one semester only. The stipend is $32,500. Fellows are expected to be free of their regular commitments so they may devote themselves full time to the work outlined in their proposal. Since this is a residential fellowship, fellows are expected to reside in the Boston area during that period and to have their primary office at the Institute so that they can participate fully in the life of the community. (WRITERS) Amsterdam Writer-in-Residence Program: Amsterdam Writer-in-Residence Program is from three to five months in the heart of the old city. Guest writers use their time in Amsterdam for their own work and research, but they will also be involved in the city's literary and cultural life. It has been decided to give preference to those authors whose works have been translated into Dutch or will be shortly, and authors who work in a wide range of literary genres. (WRITERS) Hodder Fellowship: The Lewis Center for the Arts at Princeton offers the Hodder Fellowship, a fellowship created for artists in the early stages of their careers. In keeping with the bequest of Mary MacKall Gwinn Hodder, it is awarded to individuals during that crucial period when they have demonstrated exceptional promise but have not yet received widespread recognition. Typically, Hodder Fellows are poets, playwrights, novelists, creative nonfiction writers and translators who have published one highly acclaimed book and are undertaking significant new work that might not be possible without the “studious leisure” afforded by this fellowship. Hodder Fellows spend an academic year at Princeton pursuing independent projects. Preference is given to individuals outside of academia, and candidates for the Ph.D. degree are not eligible. You need not be a US citizen to apply. The stipend for 2010-2011 is $62,000. Material must be postmarked by November 1, 2009. (FILMMAKERS) Emerging Documentary Filmmaker Grants: The Pacific Pioneer Fund gives grants to emerging documentary filmmakers or videographers who live and work in California, Oregon, and Washington. The term "emerging" is intended to denote a person committed to the craft of making documentaries, who has demonstrated that commitment by several years - but no more than ten - practical film or video experience. Grants range from $1,000 to $10,000. Fiscal Sponsor required. Funding Cycle: The board meets three times a year. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis. (MEDIA/FILM) Artist-in-Residence in Boston: The Artist in Residency at HOME, Inc. offers a three month to six month residency which may be renewable for an additional six months upon mutual agreement. The Residency provides free access to HOME's video production facilities at the HOME studios in Jamaica Plain (Boston, MA). Facilities include access to 4 Apple Studio Suite equipped editing systems, with Live Type, Motion, Final Cut Pro and other software. Additional equipment includes Betacam SP editing deck, and DVCAM camcorders, a camera boom, wireless microphones, fluid head tripods, lights etc. They also can provide a small office space. At this point there is no stipend included with the residency. HOME is particularly interested in video artists who are working on projects that have some social theme or value. (MEDIA ARTS) Residency in Portugal
Binauralmedia/Nodar Artist Residency Center: The Nodar Artist Residency Program for 2010 will focus on the Paiva River or Paviascapes #1: Structure, Process and Perception of a River for a 2-week residency module that will take place between February and October 2010. Artists will only have to pay their trip to/from Nodar. Nevertheless, the organization always tries to get some aid from the local embassies or local delegations of cultural institutes of the artists’ countries. Artists will be provided with housing, audio and video equipment, food and a social space for the artists-in-residence to network with other artists and local publics. Other trips to local spots of interest or to the performance spaces are also supported by the organization. Art disciplines: Photography; sound installation; vocal performance; sound poetry; acoustic, electro-acoustic or electronic improvisation / composition. Twelve art projects will be selected for development in residency. All nationalities are welcome to apply. Hedgebrook in Langley, Washington supports visionary women writers whose stories and ideas shape our culture now and for generations to come. Hedgebrook is open to all women writers, published or not. Writers join an intimate and diverse community of six to seven residents at a time who share dinner each evening, and often share their work and give/receive constructive feedback. All residents are selected solely on the basis of the anonymous information, essays, and writing sample supplied in their applications. Approximately forty writers are invited for residences of two to six weeks. The residency season runs from February to November. (WRITERS) Grants for Emerging Writers

The Elizabeth George Foundation offers grants to unpublished fiction writers, for unpublished and published poets, and emerging playwrights. There is no website; you need to request funding through a well-written letter. In your letter, emphasize the importance of your project, the marketability of your work, a rough financial message about your situation, and details on how you'd utilize funds. Keep requests reasonable in light of these economic times. Deadline July 1, 2009. The Elizabeth George Foundation also now sponsers a Full Scholarship for a Whidbey Writers Workshop MFA Student. In the first phase of building its scholarship and student loan program, the Whidbey Writers Workshop, located on Whidbey Island in Washington State, is pleased to announce a full-tuition merit scholarship with the establishment of the Elizabeth George Foundation scholarship.The organization is seeking additional support to aid students. In addition to the Elizabeth George Foundation full scholarship of $12,000 for an incoming student that is renewable for a second year, the WWW is also building funding for half-tuition and quarter-tuition scholarships and for financial aid assistance. (MUSICIANS/COMPOSERS) LaRue Travel Fund
The LaRue Travel Fund for Research Travel to Europe: The American Musicological Society (AMS) Jan LaRue Travel Fund is intended to encourage and assist Ph.D. candidates, post-doctoral scholars, independent scholars, and junior faculty to travel to Europe to carry out research. The fund honors the memory of Jan LaRue (1918–2004), a distinguished scholar and AMS member admired for his pioneering work on style analysis, the eighteenth-century symphony, and early computer applications in musicology. The current maximum award is $1,000. Eligible applicants must currently attend or have graduated from a doctoral program in a North American university. If they seek to conduct research for their dissertation, they must have completed all other requirements for the Ph.D. (or the equivalent doctoral degree in any field of music scholarship). If they seek to conduct post-doctoral research or are independent scholars, they should have completed the Ph. D. within the past five years. The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans: The Soros Fellowships provide opportunities for continuing generations of able and accomplished new Americans to achieve leadership in their chosen fields. The Fellowship provides half tuition and $20,000 maintenance for two years. Candidates must be either holders of green cards, naturalized citizens, or children of naturalized citizen parents. ***By the way, I believe that most people applying will be seeking funding in fields such as engineering, medicine, etc. I have heard that you actually have a better chance if you are NOT in those fields. This could be one of those rare grants/fellowships that being an artist is an advantage! Go for it!

(MEDIA ARTS) Residencies and Scholarships
Residencies: 911 Media Arts Center is considered Washington State’s premiere media arts center, dedicated to supporting the expressive use of innovative new media by providing the access, training, and environment needed to create and exhibit works of artistic excellence. The Artist in Residence Program supports innovative new media artists of all disciplines, including digital filmmakers (narrative, documentary, experimental), animators, media installation and internet art. Program is flexible depending on the artist’s needs, but typically consists of project budget, equipment and facilities access, technical assistance, exhibition or screening support, and artist honorarium. Residencies range from three to six months in duration. No travel or housing support is offered.

Scholarships: Each year 911 Seattle Media Arts Center recognizes promising new voices in the media arts with one of our coveted scholarships, offering the opportunity for an artist to learn from our instructors and further their studies in the media arts field. 911 Media Arts Center hopes to increase these scholarship funds with the help of our generous donors.

1. The Artist Media Scholarship provides financial support to seed interest and exploration in the digital media arts. Open to artists of all disciplines, the $1,000 award is to be used for classes in digital media, including video and video editing offered by 911 Media Arts Center. The funds may also apply to additional resources offered at 911 Media Arts Center such as rental of video and editing equipment, and for artist projects needing technical assistance. All levels of experience (including no experience at all) in digital media are eligible.
2. The Youth Tech Scholarship
was created to introduce and motivate young people to experiment, explore and succeed in media arts and technology. This $1,000 award is solely for classes at 911 Media Arts Center as well as special programs specifically geared for young students at 911 Media Arts Center. Currently we are accepting applications from individuals, ages 16 to 19 years old. All levels of experience in digital media are eligible for this scholarship as well. GRANTS AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR WRITERS

Don't worry...I haven't forgotten all your questions and comments from my "Calling All Artists" posts...I'm just trying to keep up with some things on the horizon. Here are a few for writers. Some have on-going deadlines, others have deadlines coming up. WRITERS EXCHANGE: Poets & Writers Exchange Program. Website: www.pw.org/about-us/maureen_egen_writers_exchange_award Deadline: Ongoing. The Writers Exchange Program is designed to encourage a sharing of works and resources among emerging writers nationwide. A poet and a fiction writer from a designated state are chosen annually. Each receives a $500 honorarium and gives readings and meets with the literary community in New York City during October. All related travel and lodging expenses and a daily stipend are covered. FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: Carnegie Fund for Authors

The Carnegie Fund offers grants-in-aid to qualified commercially published book authors who have suffered financial emergency as a result of illness or injury (their own or that of spouses or dependent children) or who have suffered some equivalent misfortune. The Bard Fiction Prize annually recognizes a promising young fiction writer under the age of 39; it consists of a $30,000 award and appointment as writer-in-residence at Bard College for one semester. SCREENWRITING FELLOWSHIPS: Walt Disney-ABC Studios

Deadline: August 8. The Disney-ABC Writing Fellowship selects up to eleven writers annually to work full-time at developing their craft in the Disney-ABC Studios' features or television division. The one-year fellowships, beginning in October, offer a salary of $50,000 plus benefits. No previous film or television experience is necessary, but writing samples are required. A number of other genre specific programs are also available. See the web site for guidelines for each program and applications.

HISTORICAL RESEARCH: Dianne Woest Fellowship

While THNOC resources should play a central role in the proposed research agenda, fellows will also be encouraged to explore other research facilities in the Greater New Orleans area. RESIDENCY: Montana Artists Refuge

Residencies for artists from all disciplines, including writers, are available for up to nine months. All four residency spaces will be occupied by writers of all genres—prose, poetry, illustrated books, screen and play writing—with a studio space available for collaborations and impromptu performances or readings. The Refuge will provide comfortable living accommodations, including utilities up to $250 per month, a stipend, a quiet rural atmosphere in which to create, the inspiration of a Rocky Mountain environment, and a supportive artistic community with which to interact if one chooses. A number of grants are available to individual artists and organizations in the District of Columbia, including Artist Fellowships of up to $5,000, given to professional creative artists living in the state. OREGON WRITING FELLOWSHIPS: Literary Arts, Inc., Oregon Literary Fellowships

Oregon Literary Fellowships and the Women Writers Fellowship help those in need of funds initiate, develop, or complete a literary project in poetry, fiction, literary nonfiction, drama, or literature for young readers. The Women Writers Fellowship gives special attention to work that explores experiences of race, class, physical disability, or sexual orientation. The minimum amount awarded for each fellowship is $2,500. See web site for guidelines and application.

WASHINGTON STATE WRITERS: Artist Trust Fellowships

Eight to ten fellowships of $6,500 each are awarded in odd-numbered years to recognize the achievements of Washington poets, fiction writers, and creative nonfiction writers. Fellowship recipients must develop and produce a public event, such as a reading, lecture, or workshop. Residents of Washington State who are at least 18 years old and are not matriculated students are eligible. Submit up to 15 pages of poetry or 20 pages of prose, a resume, and proof of residency by June 8. There is no entry fee. ARTIST TRUST FELLOWSHIPS FOR WASHINGTON STATE ARTISTS

(ALL) The Artist Trust/Washington State Arts Commission Fellowship awards $7,500 to practicing professional artists of exceptional talent and demonstrated ability. The Fellowship is a merit-based, not project-based award. Artist Trust seeks applications from individual generative artists for the 2009 Fellowship. This year artists in the following categories are invited to apply: Music, Media, Literary and Craft Arts (Emerging Fields, Cross-Disciplinary, Performing, Visual and Traditional & Folk Artists can apply in June 2010.)
