ENVIRONMENTAL ARTISTS GRANTS, BERLIN FELLOWSHIPS AND MORE

(ARTISTS) Bernheim Outdoor Art Fellowship
This fellowship is only offered every other year. Bernheim is a beautiful 14,000-acre property located 25 miles south of Louisville, Kentucky. It encompasses a nationally recognized arboretum and 14,000 acres of natural area protecting diverse plant and animal species. Over fifty miles of hiking trails, outdoor exhibits and other facilities offer abundant recreational and inspirational opportunities, which attracts thousands of visitors each year.

The goal in all of Bernheim’s activities is to help realize its mission of strengthening the bond between people and nature by finding new ways to connect nature with people’s everyday lives. The Bernheim Indoor Art Fellowship is given semi-annually to a talented artist who will work within the Forest and/or Arboretum to create works that are inspired by and installed in the natural world. The Fellowship provides the artist an opportunity to advance his or her own skills and career while enhancing awareness of Bernheim’s goals regionally, nationally and internationally. The Fellow recipient is required to live at Bernheim for up to three months while working on his/her project. Bernheim will provide comfortable housing in a beautiful wooded setting, plus a financial grant of up to $2,500.00 to cover travel, and other expenses. (ALL DISCIPLINES) American Academy in Berlin
Berlin Prize Fellowship: Residential fellowships offer round-trip airfare, housing at the Academy, partial board, and a stipend ranging from $3,500 to $5,000 per month to emerging as well as established scholars, writers, and professionals who wish to engage in independent study in Berlin for an academic semester or in rare cases for an entire academic year. Fellows are expected to be in residence at the Academy during the entire term of the award. (POETS) Amy Lowell Poetry Travelling Scholarship
The Amy Lowell Poetry Travelling Scholarship awards approximately $32,000 annually to an American-born poet to spend one year outside North America, in whatever place the recipient feels will most advance his or her work. (WRITERS & TRANSLATORS) Omi International Arts Center Residency
The Ledig House International Writers Residency is located approximately two and a half hours north of New York City in the town of Omi, in the scenic Hudson River Valley. Writers and translators from all fields are encouraged to apply for a residence lasting anywhere from one week to two months. Up to twenty writers per session—ten at a given time—live and write on the stunning 300-acre grounds and sculpture park that overlook the Catskill Mountains. Ledig House provides all meals, and each night a cook prepares dinner. INTERNATIONAL RESIDENCIES IN BALI, GREECE AND MORE!

(ALL DISCIPLINES) Residency in Bali
The Bali Purnati Center for the Arts in Indonesia offers up to twelve artist residencies twice a year (three months each spring and fall) to artists in a variety of disciplines. Eligible fields include performing, visual arts, written word, music and film. The foundation seeks to support early stage development of ground-breaking works fusing original stories and traditions in Asia with contemporary artistic vision. (ALL DISCIPLINES) Residency in Australia
Art in Motion Residency: Calling Artists interested in time and space for two weeks to a month in Australia. Deadline is August 1, 2009, for 2009-2010 residencies. This will be a time of creative space on farm land on the mid-north coast of Australia which is one of the holiday destinations for Sydneysiders in the summer months. Facing the spectacular views of the lake this is a space to feel free enough to focus on whatever project you aspire to as an artist. The retreat exists to allow artists time to work without distractions. Located in a rural area, and there is no public interaction (rules prohibiting anyone from interrupting artists in their studios between 9:00 and 5:00). Payment (payment of actual expenses), one artist per residency can simply come for free. Scholarship funded by the local community. Yaddo Residency in Saratoga Springs, New York: Residencies for creative artists working at a professional level in their field and repeat residencies permitted. Five week residencies take place year-round. Yaddo provides housing, meals, studios, travel assistance and materials stipend. $20 application fee. All facilities are accessible. Accommodations can be made for artists with hearing or vision impairments. The next deadline is August 1, 2009, but please double check with the website to make sure. ***A word to the wise: like MacDowell, this residency is more appropriate for mid-career to established artists and less for emerging ones.

(DANCE/PERFORMING ARTS) Residency in Greece
KINITIRAS DANCE SPECTACLE was founded in 1996. Since then, Kinitiras has a continuous presence in the field of dance-theatre focusing on the theatrical character of dance. The company is working based on the theories of Rudolf Laban, Augusto Boal and Devised Theatre Co. KINITIRAS has recently started a residency program for dancers, so please check their website for more details: www.kinitiras.com.

DEADLINES FOR EMERGING AND MID-CAREER WRITERS!

Here are some upcoming opportunities for both emerging and mid-career writers...and by the way, if you live in the U.S. you should check your home state arts council to see if there are any deadlines coming up for fellowships and grants. Lots of them have deadlines in July and early September so check my sidebar on the right for the correct link.

The Alice Hayes Fellowship for Social Justice
Ragdale Foundation, Lake Forest, Illinois. This Fellowship is awarded to a woman fiction or nonfiction writer who is working to bring awareness to social justice, environmental justice, or peace. The Alice Hayes Fellow will receive a four week residency at Ragdale and a $500 stipend. Deadline: September 15, 2009. Lesbian Writers Fund
The application deadline for this grant was June 30th but was just EXTENDED to July 15th, 2009! The Lesbian Writers' Fund offers grants of $10,000 to U.S. emerging lesbian writers in fiction and poetry who have published at least once in a magazine, literary journal, or anthology. Write to Lesbian Writers' Fund Awards at above address or see the web site for guidelines and application. Applicants may submit in only one category each year. Emerging Voices Rosenthal Fellowships
PEN Center USA West, Emerging Voices Rosenthal Fellowships, Antioch University, 400 Corporate Pointe, Culver City, CA 90230. Several Emerging Voices Rosenthal Fellowships, with cash prize of $1,000 each, are available to emerging writers from minority, immigrant, and underserved communities. The program includes a one-on-one mentoring relationship with an established writer, master classes with established novelists, classes in the Writers' Program at UCLA Extension, informal visits with writers, and literary readings. Writers' Center Fellowship and Residency
Bronx Council on the Arts, 1738 Hone Avenue, Bronx, New York 10461
The Bronx Writers' Center Fellowship annually awards two nine-month literary fellowships to writers who reside in the Bronx, regardless of age but who are not enrolled as full-time students. An award of $5,000 is given to each winner and a community service project at the Bronx Writers' Center is required. All eligible applicants must submit four copies of a representative body of work of no more than ten pages of poetry or twenty pages of fiction. The work should display professional accomplishment and their commitment to a literary career. OPPORTUNITIES FOR WRITERS

Howard Fellowships in Fiction and Poetry
Stipends of $25,000 will be awarded to support individuals working on specific writing projects for the academic year 2010-2011. There are no residency requirements for individuals who receive awards. The deadline for receipt of applications is November 9, 2009. Beginning in the fall of 2010, the Howard Foundation plans to follow a five-year rotation of fields for its annual fellowship competition, as described below:
2010-2011 Fiction and Poetry
2011-2012 Creative Non-Fiction, Translation, Literary and Film Studies
2012-2013 Photography Anthropology, Archaeology
2013-2014 Painting, Sculpture History of Art and Architecture
2014-2015 Playwriting, Music Theatre Studies, Musicology, History
2015-2016 Creative Writing in English: Fiction and Poetry Philosophy
Appropriate candidates for a Howard Fellowship should have completed their formal studies within the past five to fifteen years and should also have successfully completed at least one major project beyond degree requirements that would be sufficient for the awarding of tenure at a research institution or for achieving comparable peer recognition, e.g., through publication. The Howard Foundation awards a limited number of fellowships each year for independent projects in selected fields. The Foundation targets its support specifically to early mid-career individuals. Amsterdam Writer-in-Residence Program
These writing residencies are available for three to five months and include living space in the heart of the old Amsterdam. The existing funds do not cover the author's travel expenses, but do allow for a maximum residence grant of 2,000 Euro per month. Active assistance will be provided to the authors to help find subsidies in their respective countries of origin in order to finance the journey to Amsterdam. Open deadline.
